This movie made me love Captain America. Him never giving up against the hulk and his struggle to accept the leadership role. The hulk vs the avengers is one of my favorite fights
My fav moment on him was the tragic but still sweet moment of him learning in the modern world especially his friends that either caught up with time or passed off too early and honors their deaths
For many, this movie is what The Ultimates comics should have been: A modern version of the Avengers, but at the same time not ashamed of its roots. And as a movie, I have to say that even though it has several flaws, this movie and its sequel are still holding up pretty decently. A great start to the brief but legendary "Marvel Animated Features"
Hulk lifting the hammer makes sense, since this adaptation is based on the Ultimates. In those comics Mjölnir works like it works in mythology. Theres no "worthines" enchantment you just have to be really really strong
Because of this movie I didn’t know the hammer worked differently in marvel than it did in mythology and this movie, I was still young so it makes sense why I thought that way but I could’ve easily figured out the differences if I had just looked it up
@@danielvaughn1947how is it stupid, it’s just a hammer in myth and it takes the god to wield it as he does for it become feared. what’s stupid is that the hammer is what makes the god in the comics. Maybe less so now but in the early days Thor had a time limit where he turns back into a human when separated from his hammer, and it’s stupid that the hammer arbitrarily picks people to be like yeah you get the same power as a marvel powerhouse, by lifting me up instead of just being a hammer that’s heavy. Like it is in the myth and it’s the fact that it’s being wielded by Thor that it’s feared by all.
The Ultimate movies and EMH’s really do make Cap feel like a man out of time, from Ultimate Cap revisiting Bucky and the fallen to EMH’s meeting Fury and telling him about his connections. They truly make him feel like a living legend with no identity in the modern age.
The movie is truly great and I love Ultimate Avengers, but just having revisited the film last night, the only true flaw I could find was that it was extremely rushed. Pacing was unbelievably fast and didn't give you much time to process anything. I would have rather had a three hour film of that though, then Infinity War.
i love that. in the MCU its kinda rushed. but in EMH and this movie it makes you feel like hes a legend placed out of time trying to make the most out of this bad situation
@@shadowtrooper4435as a kid i always had to watch them on vacation trips and i found them lengthy and boring but there’s something about them… i wouldn’t call them rushed!
This was basically the 616 Avengers in the 1610 storylines (kind of), honestly prefer Hulk being more of a failed Captain America experiment, adds more to the story.
Aspects of this movie are stuff I wish was in the original Avengers movie like having Ant-Man and the Wasp in it, Betty Ross playing a role in Bruce’s story, and Captain America’s struggle with living in a world where nearly everyone he knows and loves are gone or moved on.
Janet and Hank are being forgotten to time. Almost like Marvel wants to phase them out permanently. Which is such a shame because both are my favorite characters in EMH.
This Captain America is probably the greatest cinematic Captain America so far, albeit not being fully accurate to neither Ultimate Cap nor 616-Cap (sort of like a mix between the two which was a welcoming change).
@@jaredgarcia8638well, it’s a more grounded take. Cap isn’t a timeless pillar of virtue. He isn’t what popular culture imagines what a figure like George Washington was like. He was a man & a product of his time. I enjoy that flawed interpretation of him more.
My father is a huge comic nerd and this movie was his first time introducing me to the avengers. This movie is more than a movie to me. This movie is a central part of my childhood and the relationship I have with my father
Fun Fact: Before Edward Norton was fired, the main antagonist for Avengers (2012) was supposed to be The Hulk. Norton actively advocated for this vision until he was fired
He bodies everybody, and then Nick comes out and is like "you can NOT win, and he's currently sedated! He's nerfed and he's folding you! His hot nerdy gf is the only way!" Pure bad ass energy, hulk feels like a real walking catastrophe. This movie set the highest bar for the hulk, and no one has ever topped it.
This movie introduced me to Captain America, Thor, Ant Man, Wasp, and Black Widow but Cap to me is the standout just because of how much guts he showed trying to fight Hulk despite being completely outmatched.
Completely forgot how much of a beast cap was taking on hulk. Walked up to him and hit him with a right hook, even getting hulkt to stumble from it. Cap in general was done well same with everyone
It's one of those movies where the first 2 acts are fantastic and then it kind of loses me in the third act. They set up his character really well, but were like "Oh wait I guess we need to finish the movie somehow" and it just felt like ticking the necessary boxes.
It's a good Steve Rogers movie, but not a good Captain America movie. The whole World War II parts just don't feel as heavy as the characterization they gave to the protagonist. It's like the opposite of 'Wonder Woman', where the best parts were the World War I parts showing Wonder Woman and the weaker ones were of Princess Diana in Themiscyra. If they made the 'Captain America' war scenes like they did in 'Wonder Woman', with all the struggles people were facing at war, it would've been perfect.
One of the best things in this movie back then was that in this version Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff start romantic relationship this is something they really could include in MCU infinity saga also this old animated Marvel movie shows best versions of Captain America, Nick Fury, Black Widow, Thor and Hulk
Yes! So glad I'm not the only one who grew up on the UA movie, most of the new MCU fans have no idea this movie exists, and here I am who has seen it years before The Avengers (2012). Now talk about the second movie where the 3rd act is basically a mockup for the Infinity War Wakanda Battle (City dome shield, Cap and T'challa fighting together, War Machine armor, etc.)
I swear Captain America and Hulk are the two most interesting Marvel characters from a story point perspective. They’re just so fascinating. Cap - a man out of time, living in a time he doesn’t understand. Hulk - a man desperate to subdue the monstrous aspect of himself he fears more than anything else. That is amazing writing points!
I think something that doesn't get enough appreciating in this movie is how much it tries to have realistic stakes to everything and that is something that I only realize now as an adult. Captain America having insecurities as a leader makes him fail, but also better for having to deal with that responsability over his own needs. Iron Man having a secret identity hinders him, but also makes him better for having to stand all that criticism in silence. Thor going against his own father leaves him by himself, but also makes him better for having to hold his ground on what he believes. Ant-Man having struggles to follow orders makes him fail, but also makes him better for having to learn to work with others. And all of that is only the characters and their arcs. All of them are seen as superheroes, but deep down they're all just humans just like anyone else. They have flaws, they make mistakes, they get hurt, they suffer with their regrets, but they always choose to get back up and try again, even if that means sacrificing their lives to do what has to be done in order to do what's right. Seeing them being almost killed in such brutal ways really made me think about how this story could've easily ended up like an episode from 'The Boys'.
When I first watched The Avengers in the cinema, I was half-expecting the scene in the Helliciarrier to be similar to this film. I mean, can you imagine Cap vs Hulk in live-action?
Note: In Earth 1610, the Super-Soldier serum plays an important role in the Ultimate Universe as many parties sought to recreate the serum that created Captain America. This resulted in the creation of the mutants, the spider that bit Peter Parker, the Osborne formula, the Hulk's creation, and Captain America's analogues in Europe. And the MCU tried to do something similar.
I LOVED Ultimate Avengers 1 and 2, I had them on DVD growing up. Cap’s “Haven’t you heard? Hitler’s DEAD” line has stuck in my head for years, I don’t even think I knew who Hitler was when I first saw it.
I got this for my sixth birthday and I still love it. This is what made me think Captain America was cool. I thought it was so cool that he stood against the hulk even though he was totally outmatched
He is not exactly hated, he is not particularly loved or cherished either. He was the best part of the first Ultimates comic, be it a good or a bad thing.
@@NuggetGX It can still work in live action. It’s not just for animation. Not everything’s needs to follow the mcu formula. That’s just your opinion lol. Why do you think a lot of dceu fans like the way the the universe started and we’re fine with it?
@@comicbooknerd3570 because your a fan of the franchise and regardless of what they put out your always going to try to give them the benefit of the doubt. The way the dceu not only started, but ran was a complete mess. Hopefully james gunn can fix it up 🙏🙏🙏
I like the movie but I kinda feel sometimes the movie lack progression(like Black widow like captain América because Yes) but still was very cool to see this modern team not being really assholes. I always thought they would made a ultimate spider-man tv show like in the comics(the one we got lets be real dosen't have much ultimate spider-man like in the comics)
I like that she was more gentle and looked up to Cap when she was talking to him. Also, I agree about Ultimate Spiderman. Would have been very cool to see that comic series made into a cartoon.
I remember watching this as kid & absolutely loving it while being taken aback by how different some characters felt. Will definitely rewatch it after this video.
In the comics the illustrator misread the script he was supposed to accidentally hit her but the illustrator made it look intentional and they had no time to fix it . And the reason why he was so mad in the first place is because he was kicked off the team, trying to prove to them that he is a substantial member to the team he was in his office for countless days making robots and the wasp was worried about Hank. being frustrated he got angry and did a "get away from me" pose and stuck her across the face
I remember owing this movie on DVD when i was a kid and being so confused after watching the Avengers movie because I thought it was supposed to be an adaptation of the animated movie
I would love for an adaptation of the comics again in a tv form, matching the story of Mark Millar and art of Bryan Hitch down to the last detail. (Obviously this would have to be animated)
The closest thing I can recommend is Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes. It's an adaptation of the original 616 Avengers instead of the Ultimates, but it's still the best adaptation of them. Yes, it's better than the MCU.
I could never get past the hulk part in this movie, I was so scared of hulk. My fear of him was very sporadic though, I had tons of hulk toys and games, and watched the cartoon all the time, but this movie and anything else scared me. I do remember loving this movie though.
I remember being a teenager when this came out and my father bought it for me on dvd and we watched it together. I really enjoyed it. It was such great writing and performances (Nolan North as Antman) - both of them were great. It's a shame it wasn't a trilogy and that marvel didn't continue making more animated movies like this
Ultimates cap is the best cap. EMH is 2nd because I feel like he did not live up to his true comic strength. But can we talk about how ultimate was able to 1v1 the hulk? Even tho he defeated Ant Man and Thor and Stark, he still choose to stand up to the Hulk, even tho he knew he was no match. I truly love this Cap wish this was the 2012 Avengers movie. Can we also admire the amount of times Cap was ragdolled? Also I love how he just tell's Hulk am not done with and just punched him in the face was Fucking fantastic!.
Agreed. However, there is no movie or shows that got Cap "fully" right but just some aspects of him. Like Ultimates is Cap with his compelling man out of time driven story, leadership or tactical skills, never say die attitude and superhuman physical abilities. EMH is Cap with his inspirational speeches, commanding presence and noble character. MCU Cap with his peerless fighting skills whether martial arts or otherwise. There are so many parts of what makes comic book Captain America great that is never adapted to its last drop in his mainstream incarnations. Ultimate Avengers is the closest however.
@@darn4285 💯 and something people don't realize, nor the Dr. Who(pun) created the SSS knew, was that just like Hulk who gets stronger when he gets angrier, Steve does so also to a lesser degree but based on WILL POWER not anger and it explains 90% of 'plot armor' seen in his tales. People go by his BASE stats of 800lbs overhead lift, but that was 40 years ago and he's grown physically since the 1950s when he had a more slim figure (looks 180lbs) and was very fast and strong back then. In the late 1980's onward he was 40-60lbs bigger. That's 40lbs+ of SSS muscle, not regular muscles. His bones are denser, overall everything is enhanced and in SYNERGY, but most people think he's just on Super Steroids and just 'Strong'. Cap man handled Iron Fist with only BASIC fighting moves, as narrated straight from Danny's thoughts. Yet I see people putting IF and others, above Cap on H2H fighting lists.smh.
In the Ultimate comics the Ultimates are technically the Ultimate Universe version of the Avengers. And I love that so much better than the main Marvel continuity.
I genuinely love the voice cast for these movies. This is the voice I hear in my head for Nick Fury. Also: just in case anyone’s wondering, in the Ultimates, Hulk goes on a rampage because he finds out Betty is on a date with another man, ends up killing hundreds of people and Betty eventually reveals that she’s turned on by Bruce’s jealousy.
Thank you so much for bringing back memories. I have thought about these movies so often as they were also my introduction into the wider Marvel Universe. I wasn’t certain when I saw the title but as I watched and saw the scenes, the memories came flooding back. I watched these two so much growing up. Wish I still had them somewhere
11:29 - 12:23 If there's ever a time when I feel bad for the Avengers, it's whenever they have to try to fight the Hulk. Because you know that at best, they're about to get their asses beat really badly, and at worst, some of them are about to lose their lives.
honest opinion: this ultimate avengers movie was one of my favourite marvel productions. i like it, ever since the first time i watched it when i was little
One thing about Hank beating up Janet in the comics: that happened only once and Hank was not in his right mind at the time. That element, as you mentioned, got exploded by Mark Miller in the Ultimates making it an extremely abusive relationship, which retroactively corrupted an otherwise pretty wholesome relationship. Hank Pym was not an abusive asshole.
@@sonictennyson2201 616-Hank did one very wrong thing, one vile thing (in his marriage, obviously there's Ultron) but 1610-Hank was like the result of that old whisper game where the info gets corrupted down the line. 616-Hank was kicked to the curb by Jan and the team for his action, which he was not in his right mind when he did, but he still did it. It gets mixed up with 1610, where not only is Hank indeed a vile abuser, but Jan takes him back more than once. 616 Jan had agency. Right after she showed Hank the door, she served a long stint as Team Chair. Jan-1610 died literally one of the most ignominious deaths ever. But don't anyone mix up the very troubled 616 versions with the grimdark edgelord fest that is the 1610 couple.
Watched the animated as a young teenager, and my god I loved the voice acting. Especially when hulk punches Hank’s knee out, it felt so visceral. Even Cap’s tired attempts to calm down the Hulk. Hell, even the Hulk was amazing! I came back to watching this not too long ago because the scenes and voice acting are still in my head, I had to rewatch.
I personally love this movie. It plays a part in my early years and was one of my introductions to superheroes. It might not have been the best but it has a special place in my heart
Oh my god, 616 Hank didn’t “beat the shit out of Janet”. It was a misinterpretation of the intended scene on the artist’s part and it was the only time he ever “beat” her. It’s not like he abused her on a daily basis.
I remember renting this from my local library when I was a kid probably Avengers and even EMH. I could remember some tidbits like hulk forcing thor's hammer and the cap out of time stuff
this is why I think that captain america's first movie should have started with him freezing over, and have the rest of the movie be a citizen kane style exploration of past events. where he trudges through his memories and tries to understand the innumerable changes between his time and modern day.
This movie was definitely what The Ultimates should have been, considering they're much closer to the original Avengers rather than the blatant super soldiers we got in the Ultimate Universe. Of course, a big reason why The Ultimates was the way it was had been the result of a post-9/11 media landscape, in which it was largely Mark Millar critiquing President Bush's foreign policy without explicitly bringing up things like Iraq and Afghanistan or things like that. Unsurprisingly, those comics did NOT age well, this movie aged much better than they did, and now we have a better version of even THIS with the 2012 movie.
Even tho it's bad aspects (racist Cap, evil Hulk, evil Ant-Man, and antiquated trends and unnecessary violence) prevent me from putting the Ultimates on my very top favorite Avengers comics, cuz the mainstream OG marvel avengers comics are the ones I like to read the most, the Ultimates are in my 2nd top for it's good parts: the parts revealing the hidden hearts under their jerkishness, the character development they grow most of them, the action, the atmosphere, the modern take helping the Avengers franchise back into sales, and finally the Ultimates comics 1 and 2 did help inspire the MCU (along with the animated movies).
i love this movie i watched so much when i was little and i hate when people say the ultimate's comic sucks or isn't good because it is i mean look at this movie it adapts the ultimate's comic beat for beat and it works and is a good story to the point where they pulled from it to make the mcu
Yes, the avengers movies aren't original, the 2 animated movies were the actual blue print. They came out in 2006. But to be honest, it's also annoying how the movies de powered cap. In the 2006 anime movie, the guy flipped a tank to use it's guns like a normal human flipping a book. No effort. And I like how he threw around all those soldiers the moment he woke up from ice, in the movie it was only 2 guys and in the anime he threw around at least 10 guys shooting at him and had no shield
@@DavidMartinez-ce3lp Isn't obvious?? everyone else just cares about the MCU now more than anything else Marvel has back then, like why am I the only one that shows love and support to Marvel's Animation more than it's stupid Live Action movies? why??
@@monster-mecha_enthusiast_2002 that's what I've been saying too! The last thing that truly felt like Marvel was the Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes show. I've gotten really tired of the MCU, especially because now it feels like everything has to mirror and promote only the MCU. It can't stand on its own. We aren't getting anymore unique and interesting takes on Marvel like these old shows/movies. I've been buying all the old marvel shows/movies on dvd.
If Norton wanted the hulk to be the secret main villain in the avengers then it could’ve been pulled off perfectly tbh and so to prove how strong and uncontrollable he is as an asset. Hell that would even warrant them at least to give us a planet hulk movie. I genuinely think the mcu failed directly after avengers age of ultron simply for not doing more with what they had
established titles is a good prank gift and nothing more. you do not actually become a lord, laird, or lady. you don't even own the land, you just have usage of it, and if you want to help the trees, just donate to an actual charity
These movies make the ultimate universe look good with good storytelling and great characters. Yeah, that sounds like the ultimate universe comics (except the ultimate Spiderman comics. Those are great)
Ultimate Avengers demonstrated to me that Millar never should have been writer for those comics. Plotting, absolutely. But his general distaste for all of these characters no matter what he was writing always shone through.
finally someone else noticed this!!! I've told my family and friends about how mcu and these animated fils are almost the same, wich is not something bad at all, but any of my friends thought I was right when I told them haha. I loved "Ultimate avengers movie" it made me get to love marvel and is a very important part of my childhood, it was thanks to this movie that i realized Ironman was my favourite super hero ever, so I was actually very very happy to pretty much watch this movie come true when I watched 2012 "The Avengers" for the first time.
They've come out before and said that they took most of their direction from the Ultimates comics. Brian Michael Bendis was working closely with Kevin Fiege at a point so it's likely where the relationship came from. Everything from storm breaker to Tony's attitude was taken from this all the good ideas you can sayv
Marvel should definitely make more animated movies in the future. The old ones like Ultimate Avengers, Planet Hulk, Hulk VS. and Doctor Strange are super underreated. I loved those.
