For those who don’t know, Mike has an 11 year-long career on Broadway, (Newsies original Broadway cast, which he was hired at only 19, and Dear Evan Hansen, where he won a Grammy and an Emmy, as well as a Tony nomination). I know people think this is the “start” of his career since it’s his first big Hollywood movie, but the man has worked hard and has had a great career specially in theatre for over a decade. Can’t wait to see what he does next in both film and theatre.

Really glad WSS's Mike Faist was nominated. It's criminal he didn't get an Oscar nod here in America. For an acclaimed director like Spielberg to say he was considering delaying production on WSS to ensure Mike was in it should give everyone strong clues as to how awesome he is. Mike gave a performance in WSS rarely seen. It's one thing to deliver lines effectively like many of the nominees have. But they were not required to perform their roles through dance or song as Mike did. "Riff" stole every scene he was in in a film that was filled with terrific performers. When he was no longer in the film, "Riff" was missed. We'll be tuning in on the 13th for the show, rooting for Mile

did you read the story that when they painted over the sharks sign in that opening scene of WSS - the director yells cut and a team goes into clean the wall off for a retake - and Spielberg is looking for Mike to talk to him - and he is actually helping to clean off the wall? A really good kid.

We saw the film last week at theatre and are still talking about Mike Faist as Riff. Mike is incredible. It wasn't just he was an incredible as Riff through words. He was Riff through singing and especially his dance. This was a memorable break-out performance. I'm glad BAFTA recognized it. People who may not know how great he is will learn about Mike through his BAFTA nomination.

I am SO impressed by Mike. Not only is he beautiful physically, but he seems to be a genuinely nice, intelligent, generous person who perhaps underestimates how very talented he is. When you see him in person, speaking as himself, you really understand what an amazing job he did as Riff. He disappeared into what is basically a pretty non-sympathetic character, and gave him so many layers, made us care about him, made us feel drawn to him. I'm a WSS purist, being old enough to have loved the original for years. But I also loved the new changes, especially the ones that let him shine. I thought all the actors did a good job (especially Rachel and Ariana), but for me, Mike was the best part of the movie.

The highlight of Spielberg's West Side Story is the vibrant and layered performance of Mike Faist. His Riff embodies danger, charisma & vulnerability. Faist expertly uses his body language + facial expressions to ignite the 1950s "live fast, die young" Beat generation mentality in our understanding of Riff's journey and motivation. Russ Tamblyn visited the set and you could see his happiness when meeting Mike. Hope he wins the BAFTA

Mark my words: People are going to look back years from now and be totally shocked that Mike Faist wasn’t nominated for an oscar for West Side Story. It will be a Toni Colette/Hereditary scenario. Glad he got a Bafta nomination. Award season treated him like dirt.

His performance was probably the most surprising because the 1961 Riff was way to comical. Kushner and Spielberg made Riff hard core and tough as a leader of the Jets. After he got stabbed and turned to Tony knowing he’s gonna die got me so teary eyes.

The fact that WSS has not been recognised with more nominations by BAFTA and the Oscars (to a lesser degree) is absolutely criminal!! How can it not be nominated for Best Picture and Direction is beyond me! It was easily one of the best films of 2021 (some argue the best) in both technical (direction, cinematography, etc) and artistry (choreography, acting, adapted screenplay etc).

I've watched a few interviews with Mike and this guy is just delightful. Seeing his face just feels like getting a warm hug 😆. Can't wait to watch the Spielberg remake after watching the original West Side Story.

Part of this young man's appeal is that he really doesn't know how appealing, how sweet, how very sexy he is. Hard to believe, but it's true. He is going to be a very big star, if that is what he wants, if he stays focused on his art and craft--and he is. :)
