Michael Peters try it live in judo randori. You will either get countered or just be unable to get into position unless you have a lot of finesse or have some throw combinations to set it up. It’s hard to break balance for the throw, it’s hard to get close enough to pull it off with their arms in the way and if they see it coming you can get countered pretty hard to land on your back. This is in contrast to something like uchi mata which is a technically very challenging move, but once you have the technique down it is harder to see coming and much harder to counter in my opinion. I happen to have a good body type for osoto gari with pretty long legs so it is probably my best throw along with kosoto gari. It took years to be able to pull it off consistently though. Other judo players try the same through to me regularly but I find it quite easy to defend unless the player is very advanced or if they specialise in the throw or have a size advantage or something. Hope that helps! Let me know if you want more info

I added this to my sparring. Its like you want to pull guard, OK you can start from bottom side-control trying to defend an armbar. Only nuance, is you have to get past both of their feet to avoid half-guard. It works well with outside foot sweep.

I have personally never seen at blackbelt level in any competition getting 2 points with osoto gari against someone pulling guard. You see a lot of Ko Uchi Garis ( because its a quicker short move ) but no Osotos. Actually Osoto Gari is extremely rare in Jiu-Jitsu at blackbelt level. 1. Because in JJ, opposite to Judo you can do 2 defensive grips on the collar wich makes Osoto almost impossible. 2. The Osoto is an outside technique that demands a lot of time and the need to use your whole body to unbalance your oponent. Quicker foot throws, like, O uchi gari, Ko Uchi Gari, De Ashi Harai and Sasae are more effective to Jiu-Jitsu.
@plcoelho
@plcoelho 3 года назад
@JSL can you point out any examples. Maybe any fight in particular? Videos in flo or youtube with examples. Can’t remember in high level black belt competitions, Worlds, Pans, Europeans any Osotos. And I go trough hundreds of videos every year plus the events that I atend.
@plcoelho
@plcoelho 3 года назад
@JSL Judo Takedowns are actually very common in Jiu-Jitsu competitions. Watch a Rodolfo Vieira Highlight. Every match begins with a drop seoi or ko uchi gari. What is not common and absolutely rare is an Osoto gari. You had to go as far as 2008 to show an attempt of an Osoto with no success by Leo Leite who was at the time part of Brazils Judo National Team as well as a high level blackbelt in BJJ from Alliance, exactly for the reasons I stated in my original coment. The second fight is not a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament. Its a newaza challenge. Reality is Osoto gary is almost impossible to use in BJJ Blackbelt level competitions. And in fact nobody uses it. This is very easy to demonstrate as hundreds of videos of BJJ fights have all sorts of Judo Takedowns but no Osoto Garis. But you are welcome to change my mind and show me a couple.
@plcoelho
@plcoelho 3 года назад
@JSL Check Erberth and Rodolfo. Both World Champions in BJJ using Seoi Nage, Ko Uchi Gari and Sasae in all their fights. Check the videos.
@plcoelho
@plcoelho 3 года назад
@JSL He had a proper osoto with both grips attempt at 7:31, missed and for me personally the second one it was a sloppy takedown, where Roger could've gotten up because Leite desingaged but Roger chose to stay down. But in fact you were right, 2 points.

Demian Maia pulled guard in many UFC fights successfully. When he started standing and tryna box boxers and wrestle wrestlers is when he started losing...the losing path most BJJ experts take in MMA. I know it's cool to say not to pull guard, but when your opponent is a better wrestler or striker with great tD defense then it's wise.
