Anthony Mann's THE TIN STAR is a fine example of the western film during its 1950s pinnacle. With the new Blu-ray release from Arrow Video, let's discuss why it works so well and is an unsung masterpiece.

I was a firearms instructor for my police department and showed my shooters the scene from the creek where Fonda explained the diference between "slowing down" and "making the first shot count". You're right, it is a perfect movie and there are few films that can claim that.

You had me at Anthony Mann. He's a director that continues to floor me by turning expectations and genre tropes upside down. I can think of no better example of what I've seen of his work than Man of the West with Gary Cooper. It starts out like a safe Disney western but it's not that at all. Looking forward to The Tin Star. Cheers!

50s westerns and noir is the most fun era to explore. So many gems that don’t get modern day light. I explore them now as a 28 year old because of Heath. Great coverage as always

Thanks for the recommendation Heath I have it in my list. I agree with you about the actors and movies of the 50s. They were a different breed. A lot of them were kids who saw real war and came home and tried to express it to us in the silver screen. They were the greatest generation that is now almost gone.

I didn’t ask her what it was like, but when I did meet Betsy Palmer (the 1st time), I made a comment like “you starred with Fonda!” and she made some quick, pleasant reply about it. When I met Ted White (Jason from #4), I likewise brought up his work with John Wayne.

Until recently, I'd thought of Anthony Mann as only a director of classic Westerns, but he was much more than this. Having just done a day course on his early noir films. I discovered some really interesting low budget films he made, whilst learning his trade. For instance theres a great little gothic noir called "Strangers In The Night" (1944) and an intriguing film in which he directs Erich Von Stroheim called "The Great Flamarion (1945). However, my favourite is his contemporary Western "Border Incident" (1949). A still relevant story of illegal border crossings and the criminal gangs who profit from peoples dreams of a better life. A powerful film and in my mind one his best!

One of the best videos you've ever done, HH! And that's not just because I agree with everything you say here and endorse it all myself, but because you have touched on many things the hobby needs to address every so often, as well as stretching the narrow boundaries of most RU-vid channels devoted to the particular subject. This is what we need, more in depth looks at titles and whole genres that are customarily and unfairly ignored in the face of endless critiques of horror/scifi/martial arts next big things. For anyone who might be bored enough to read this comment, follow Heath's lead here and get yourself a copy of THE TIN STAR. Imagine a movie with a real place, a real sky, real ground, and real people all around, no computers and no cartoons, just story, characters and brilliance. 😍

Sometimes, I just want to hear some cat just talk about a film for five to fifteen minutes. I don't want to hear someone deconstruct a transfer into oblivion. I just want to hear about the film with a brief nod to the transfer. Thanks for being one of those cats Heath.

Thanks Heath, for the insight on this incredible film. This has become one of my favorite movies. A lean, tight film with a great script about friendship and family. Beautifully photographed, paced and acted. One of my favorite scenes is where Fonda and Perkins wait in the darkness of the sheriff's office, for the lynch mob to work up the courage to come. This film is also a great response to people who always say that the 1950's is a generic, boring time for film. One of Fonda's best films, and a great bookend with My Name Is Nobody (could be the same character!) Excellent look at a great film! P.s. Sadly, Palmer passed away about two years ago. Would have loved to bend her ear about this great film!

TIN STAR needs more airtime, so thanks for making this. It's my favorite of the HIGH NOON plot reworkings. And I challenge anyone to stay seated when Tony P slaps Neville Brand in the face. For another HIGH NOON-influenced '50s Western (yeah, also with Van Cleef), watch DAY OF THE BAD MAN from '58, if you haven't already...

Will be jumping on this one like a puma on prey. Between the director and the cast, this is one I want to have in my Oaters collection. The recent California videos have made me curious ... have you ever had the opportunity to see Old Tucson? Several Westerns were filmed there.

Thrilled to see this review. As you said an amazing movie. A friend of mine loaned me a burned copy and said pretty much what you did as far as a perfect western and his absolute favorite. It took me a while to get around to watching it but when I did I was enthralled. I have it in my Amazon to buy on DVD but I am thrilled to now know it’s on Blu-ray. I am going to share your link with my friend also I am sure you helped sell 2 copies at least😊. I was wanting to ask you about Noir. What would be your recommendation for the first movie to watch if I want to watch my first Noir film? I enjoy black and white films not that I have seen many but absolutely love 12 angry men and my Abbot and Costello box set. Thanks Heath!

Sam, with noir, it's hard to go wrong with any of the classics. A good first film would be Double Indemnity, The Asphalt Jungle, The Killers, Out of the Past, The Maltese Falcon...in fact, I recently made a video with Max Allan Collins about our top 5 noir and I'd recommend any of those: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GB94fXJR9Ps.html

No love for the writer, Dudley Nichols? Have you SEEN the guy's filmography? Talk about legends, Heath! ;-)
@CerealAtMidnight
@CerealAtMidnight Месяц назад
Certainly, but then I'd have to get into his co-writers, who I also admire for their prolific work on television during the classic era of TV. Then I'd need to talk about the Oscar-winning cinematographer Loyal Griggs, and before you know it, it's not a breezy, off-the-cuff expression of my love for the film that anyone can connect with, it's a critical video essay--which is the opposite of my goal. :)
@kinotek
@kinotek Месяц назад
@@CerealAtMidnight Okay, fair enough. But from the credits it seems he wrote the script based on the other two guys' story, so you could keep the focus on him. And he did write Stagecoach! And The Informer. And Scarlet Street. And The Big Sky. So his contribution was at least as large as Mann's. As a writer myself, it's a bit of a sore point when directors get all the credit for a film. It's like saying how great Frank Capra was without mentioning Robert Riskin. Or Boetticher without Kennedy, or Ford without Nugent, or...or...! ;-)
