This tiny house breaks all the rules in the most brilliant ways. Absolutely filled with tiny house taboos, this home is nothing short of spectacular.
Designed by owners Samara and James in collaboration with Samara’s father, famed house designer Frank Macchia, this home is an absolute masterpiece.
It’s separated into three different units, a bathroom, kitchen-dining and bedroom each with a modicum of separation which provides connection to the outdoors.
All zones of the home are connected with a living ritual, be it that of cooking, eating, sleeping or washing. Every space is intentional and well thought out.
When visiting this home, the word that came to mind to describe it was elemental. Solid, earthy materials are used in both the homes construction and the surrounding landscaping which help to further connect the house to the earth which surrounds it.
Beyond the tiny house itself, Samara and James live on a property together with extended family, bringing together the best elements of multigenerational living and showing why this is a concept that should no longer be shunned by the west.
To find out more about this home and the families various business ventures, you can find them online at www.shackpalac...
I’ve fallen in love with this home. It’s taught me a lot about intentional design and the beauty in breaking the rules. I hope you find as much value in this tiny house tour as I did.

This tiny house breaks all convention and the result is simply awesome. Samara and James are building the most beautiful lives for themselves. They have constructed a home which enables them to live intentionally and thanks to its small size, the tiny house has created space for them to be able to build their business and grow in the world. Again, the connection to family in this home is also really special. Not all are blessed with close families but for those that are, I would love to see multigenerational living more normalised in the west. I'd love to hear your thoughts about this home. Thanks for watching. With Love, Bryce & Rasa

Actually me and my family are working on it right now. We need a proper design for the grandkids, grandparents and adult siblings living together under one roof so to to speak. I'm an architect enthusiast with mechanical engineering background, my wife has an uncle who builds decks as his business and we have a good few selection of friends that want to help with building it also counting a house framer apprentice who is one of our closest friends and wants to live close to us more than likely joining us in our little village we're trying to build. Fingers crossed to see if we can get a plan confirmed and stamped hopefully built by the end of this coming year.

Yes smart father! I have been pushing for something like this with my family for 10 years now and just slowly convincing them that you don't need properties all over the world we can all live together and not step on each other and have our own little community and support each other and they're going to come around because things are just getting more expensive world wide😊

Absolutely. My family all came together in lockdown and the benefits have been innumerable. There's a lot to be said for coming together, sharing resources and moving forward together as a strong unit. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a strong and healthy family dynamic, I understand that, but for those that do, it's a great option.

I have noticed that a lot of people who watch tiny house tours comment on how the people live on their parent's property, as if there is something wrong with that. I think there is something very right about that and that as a society, we need to go back to the common sense of living in community with our loved ones in order to be there for each other. Both me and my husband each have our own tiny houses and I would love nothing more than if my son and his girlfriend moved onto my property as well as my daughter, her husband and my two grandchildren. I would be thrilled if that happened.

Intergenerational living just makes sense because that's what we're designed for. The concept of separation is pushed to create more debtors, we're living in the dark ages, Family is everything. You're already halfway there with land and your own tinies, really hope your dream comes true. ☮️💜

We have our granny flat on my parents property and mum organised and built it to attract us. I’m glad she did that as we help each other. My 5 year old daughter gets to have her grandmother around and we make each other life better. Our little tribe and I love it.
@3leggedsharkkickssurferinballs
It's not so much that people think there's something wrong with parents helping their kids out, it's more that not everybody has this option, and so there is resentment and envy. Of course, it's great to see that some parents _do_ care; we shouldn't be angry or hateful towards them for this. I applaud them! If only more people could work together this cooperatively. We'd have a much better world, for sure. But for those of us who know we'll never have the option of family being a supportive safety net it can be hard to not feel a little resentful or envious of those who seem to have it all. The ever present threat of homelessness- coupled with strained/ toxic family dynamics can do awful things to one's morale.

In many parts of the world (particularly amongst minorities) living on the same property or even the same house as your parents, grandparents etc is commonplace, it’s more of a western ideology that you need to “leave the nest” and prove yourself in order to show you are a successful person. I hope you get your wish & enjoy decades of living a familial commune life.

This is a stunningly beautiful tiny home and I respect their need for darkness, but for me it would feel oppressive and depressing to an extent. Darkness at night definitely is conducive to better sleep, but the psyche needs light during the day and lighter colors and more natural light help one’s mood a great deal. I love the layout with the separate areas and the bathroom is so cool. A very unique design overall. Also multi-generational living is great for mutual support. They’ll benefit even more when they have children by having family nearby. 💗🙏🏻🏡

I think this dark colour theme works well in a bathroom/spa or bedroom area, and maybe in houses with larger rooms. I'm not convinced it's the way to go throughout an entire house though, especially paired with so few windows and such a small footprint. It certainly looks striking, but I would end up feeling very tired and sad spending all day in rooms this dark.

I like the design of the home. The darkness inside and outside is overwhelming for me. Since my family is half Finnish the elements of bright colors have been utilized to bring light inside during periods of darkness. On the other hand I do understand wanting to employ darkness as a warm blanket wrapped around you in a hug.
@livingbig
@livingbig Год назад
Yeah I definitely understand this. Being in this home though, it wasn't depressing at all. It's almost like the dark colours make the home disappear in a way, and highlight the elements both inside and out. You are drawn more to the windows, the outdoors, the plants. And in this tropical climate where indoor / outdoor living makes a lot of sense, there's little need to escape the outdoors. I can certainly understand why in a country where it's dark and cold for much of the year you'd want to brighten the space though.

Of all of the tiny homes I have seen this one seems to be the one that most authentically manifests the psyche of the people dwelling within it. Frank Macchia is definitely going on my short list of people to consult. I personally would prefer a more modulated tonality, still with the wabi sabi aesthetic, but with a traditional Japanese-Hispanic crossover feel to it where the dark stillness is formed by shadow and so is more dynamic. It would have been interesting to see a timelapse of Samara and James' home to get a feel for how dynamic the lighting is anyway, perhaps it is in the shifting highlights and reflections more than the changing tones of surfaces.

Everything you need is right there, and not a 5 minute walk to the 100 square foot cold, stone bathroom. Like you said, to each their own, but the alternative to a small cozy house to me, is a big echoey cold home that's expensive to maintain and keep running with bills and utility. I feel literally opposite. LOL Not a fan of the color pallet or the stone texture walls but the layout is nice especially the bedroom that emulated the cocoon feeling of a sleeping loft.

Wow! I’m surprised that for how dark it is… it’s not in a way. The walls really pop and make all the difference. I love it’s minimalist/ elemental approach. It’s definitely unique and you can tell they love their home. I’m a big fan of the shower area! Can you imagine a shower in the rain… amazing.

You could film a sequel to THX1138 with the guy in that home. Don’t hate it, is just does look like they went for a “bauhaus / dystopia” look. I hope they remember to take in some sunshine or other antidepressant.

I love this. This has got to be one of my favourite tiny house! This is how my family are back home all the family siblings live in the same street. I miss that. Living within close distance to your parents and family it’s just like tribes who lives together survive and thrives together. Even better for family, after all it takes a village to raise a young one. 😊

I love the idea of a family compound with separate, private spaces. I also loved all the greenery & exterior of the homes. The interior, however, was much too dark & close for my taste.

As much as I absolutely LOVE the outside - the lines, the plants, the simplicity - triple that and that's how much I hate the inside of the home It does not feel like a home. It feels more like a tomb. Minimalism is one thing, but cold is another.. To each his own though. Nice to see families staying close after the kids leave the nest. Much like my own family. Happy tinying!

We don't have a tiny house, but ever since we downsized to a condo 1200 square feet smaller than our previous home I can't imagine going back. I spend less time cleaning unused rooms, we got rid of stuff we don't you regularly and we spend so much more time outdoors paddle boarding, hiking, biking and just having our lunch times near the water. Give me a small minimal space near nature over a huge house that comes with all the yard work and cleaning and clutter anyday. This is a beautiful project they did. I love the dark moody feel to it. We also painted our bedroom a darker color and I was nervous at first, but everyone who sees it loves it and I feel like I sleep better in a smaller darker space as well.

Thank you Bryce and Rasa for another insightful edition. No doubt about it, this channel has been a huge inspiration for many people, including myself. It always gives the awareness of soo much more life options and opportunities and not be stuck into what is thought to be so rightfully built by our society. No offence to that though...to each our own... right?!..Anyway, for this edition, I learned so many things about another concept of a tiny home and most importantly the idea of living communally with your family...it may not be for everybody but I am sure this is being greatly considered by many people again despite its being conventional, at least where I am from. Thank you also to Samara and James and family for sharing their lovely homes.

I don't care for this tiny home at all. Way too dark and nowhere to relax unless you go to bed. And really nowhere for personal items. Way too minimalist for me. And how come it seems like everyone living tiny eats vegetables all the time! No fast food or twinkees?! I don't know, maybe it's just me.

I love the natural elements in this home!!! I do think a skylight to allow the changing light throughout the day to play off the interior would be a welcome element to it's beauty for me. A beautiful way to blend the outdoor living space and índoor necessary life needs.... beautifully blended!!! The black is my favorite color as a background for the vibrant colors of plants and flowers. Beautiful!!!

My partner would literally have our home this black if I let him, but we live in Europe and it gets very dark for six months of the year. I am already really prone to depression from lack of light because in NZ there's so much more light in the winter, so this is not so bad for the location. Black is great to accent other colours imo. I love the modular design though so it could be expanded to fit life in future or shrunk. I am very happy for them. Great video! It's nice that they enjoy it though, I am happy for them.
