At the World Cup in Doha, the Dutch national team was captained by the Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk, while much of their tactical acumen comes from assistant manager Edgar Davids.
Van Dijk and Davids, along with many others at the World Cup may have represented a different nation altogether - Suriname.
This is the story of how the tiny nation of Suriname produces so many world-class players. Told by Adam Crafton, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

Suriname and Jamaica man. These 2 smaller countries have contributed to sooooo many world class players over the years that ended up representing the netherlands or england. Much respect to them and i think everyone is rooting for their national teams to reach a level thats atleast close to the talent theyve contributed. It is also fair to mention that a solid percentage of these players have european parents as well too so it could be a legit tough decision for them.

It's not the population of 600,000 in Suriname that is relevant, but the population of 500,000 Dutch nationals with roots to Suriname. I don't think any world class player was ever developed in Surinam. It's a combination of the wonderful dutch football infrastructure (the fa has 1 million members, more than the Spanish fa) and the ambition and talent of the surinamese community. That is where the truth is without the Dutch infrastucture with coaching and training, many of these players would have not made it, the same argument goes for African countries. Look at how many on the Moroccan side were born in Belgium, France or the Netherlands, I believe something like 7 out of the starting 11 in the World Cup. Wij stelen al hun talent, waardoor zij nooit hun hoogste niveau kunnen bereiken en zich daardoor genoodzaakt voelen om voor het Nederlandse elftal te spelen, want alleen zo is er sportief wat te halen. Surinamese footballers from the Netherlands have a tragic plane crash in their history. In 1989, Surinam Airways flight 764 crashed while trying to land at Paramaribo (the crash was caused by the bad crew decisions made, coupled with a bizarre hiring structure of crew and lack of oversight). Many Surinamese Dutch players, part of the "Colourful 11", were on that flight to play a friendly with a local Suriname team. Most of the players on board died. Even more unfortunate, so many of the stars players part of that "Colourful 11" were denied permission from their clubs to play, so the players on that flight were second-stringers. Some players that were held back included Ruud Gullit and Aron Winter.

Just a PHENOMENAL reporting here; I’m in awe, I had no idea that Suriname had produced all this football superstars and that they themselves really wanted all this time to play for Suriname instead. CONCACAF qualifiers are going to be fire this season! Thanks Tifo ; much appreciation from Panama 🇵🇦

It didn’t as well. If they didn’t enjoy the Dutch training and funds they would not have become what they have. The same goes for players with Moroccan roots. Some play for Morocco, some for the Netherlands. But if they had been raised in Morocco most likely they wouldn’t have been great players.

Do you have proof of this 99% statistic? A quick Google search shows roughly 90.4% of Croatians are ethnic Croatians... which is quite a bit less than your quoted 99%. The most homogenous countries in the world are N Korea, S Korea and Japan - they are the ones that are around 99%.

Suriname is blessed with talented footballers, but another Island that also helps the Dutch National team to produce strong talented players is Curacao. Eventhough not as much as Suriname... Curacao also has quite a few players that represented the Dutch team or the younger Under 20 squad. Players such as Geertruida (Feyenoord), Gregory van der Wiel ( PSG, Ajax), Timber twins (Ajax & Feyenoord.), Patrick Kluivert (Ajax & Barca, his mom is from Curacao) & Jetro Willems (PSV, Newcastle & Eintracht). Currently there's almost 15 players in Ajax Youth set-up, 11 in PSV and 20 in Feyenoord youth teams. Curacao and Suriname can produce a very strong national team but majority of those players wont choose to play for either countries.

Maybe the things can change if they don´t have a chance to make it in the senior squad and Curazao & Suriname qualify to the WC more often and bring fight to the top teams in CONCACAF

The phrase Dutch master is by no means a new one. Players like Johan Cruyff, Marco Van Basten, Dennis Bergkamp and many others who were born in the Netherlands or one of their overseas territories have all been worthy wearers of the tag. Ajax Amsterdam, PSV Eindhoven and Feyenoord from Rotterdam are top football clubs from the small European nation.

Unbelievable that a video of Surinam is posted by Tifo. Surinam is a small, but football crazy, country. There are numerous artificial turf pitches and every night they are fully booked and played on. It's not uncommon to see children playing football on the streets. All in all, it would be an understatement to say that football has an impact on the Surinamese people.

This is not what I was expecting from the title. As a U.K. British born black man (not of Surinamese descent), I’m sure if I was born in Holland, my football education would be very different. I was hoping to learn about the Dutch way of developing players, as in addition to the immense players of Surinamese descent, players like Bergkamp, de Boer brothers, Robben, van Persie, van Nistelrooij, Overmars, Strootman (before the injuries), van Basten, Sneijder, Koman. Mr Total Football - Cruijff himself! Whether black or white, the Dutch have created amazing players - whether of Surinamese background or not. I’d like to know how a country as small as Netherlands, and with a league not considered the biggest, keeps producing baller after baller.

Great video, thanks! I'm surprised there was a legal hurdle to players based in NL choosing Suriname though, I thought players of mixed heritage always got to choose (if both national teams wanted them)
@lws7394
@lws7394 3 дня назад
The hurdle was from Surinam side. Lately they made it easier for Dutch Surinames to represent Suriname . I think it was like this : Before 1975 Surinamese had the Dutch nationality. Those who moved to the Netherlands in 1975 did not have a Surinamese passport, so their offspring cannot claim an additional Surinamese passport in NL on grounds of (grand)parents. In order to play for Suriname they had to swap the Dutch id for a Surinamese (As NL does not allow 2 passports without parental or birth nationality). And in a practical way that is for most people a step to far .

It's all about the quality of coaches in your country abd how well they can raise a footballer's Football IQ. A player can training harder, run faster, be stronger than opponent but if the coaching a player received was lackluster they'll always be in state of arrested development.
