In this edition of The Channel I take a look at the first incarnation of The Tomorrow People. The show's original line-up included Nicholas Young, Sammie Winmill, Stephen Salmon, and Peter Vaughan-Clarke.
The Tomorrow People was first broadcast in 1973, and is still going strong today thanks to books, reboots, and audio dramas.
A documentary featuring interviews with some members of the cast - Beyond Tomorrow - can be seen here: • Beyond Tomorrow | Tomo...

As I was watching this I was thinking, I never see or hear The Tripods mentioned anywhere. In the eighties, there was a public NJ station that ran Doctor Who from beginning to end, then repeated. Before DW came on, they ran The Tripods. I thought it was an interesting show back then and often wonder whether I'd still think so. All those old shows have such a dated look. This was one of my favourite TV shows in the 1970's. The stories; the theme tune; and the graphics that went with them, all made for a memorable experience. I believe the first episode that I watched involved Stephen's school teacher, Elizabeth, coming into her powers. (I seem to recall it was referred to as "breaking out"). From there, I watched it religiously until the series finale.

For those younger viewers, you have to remember that, back in the 70s, we only had 3 channels (BBC1, BBC2 and ITV) and no domestic recording facilities. If you watched one channel, you would miss whatever was broadcast on the others. I really liked the Tomorrow People but we were a 'BBC' family and I didn't see many of them in favour of Blue Peter, purely because Blue Peter was a great programme with a large variety of topics covered. I wish the remake was produced more like the original. It was disappointing.

It was taken from ancient Rome where there were four top teams of chariot racers, the reds the whites the blues and the greens. They were fierce rivals as were their supporters and they often rioted. One of the biggest social problems of the 70's was violent football hooligans so this was a commentary on the eternal human tendency of competition and division over trivial things.

Thought the US reboot was terrible, I hope it gets remade here in the UK, but with adults. Could be brilliant.

Nicholas Young was also a jobbing actor on the candid camera show, "Beadle's About", playing various figures (possibly even an insurance agent) as the hapless victim tried to get to the bottom of some ridiculous injustice. It always baffled me that nobody recognised him. But then, when you're trying to figure out why your car has been parked up a tree, perhaps spotting actors from lesser-remembered 1970s kids' shows wouldn't be at the forefront of your mind.

I was around 8, I think, when the show first aired and fell in love with Elizabeth Adair! I had not known humans were available that beautiful! It was a shame Sammie Winmill left after one series, afraid of being typecast, a decision she has said she always regretted. Alas, being set in London caused all sorts of budget issues at a time inflation and the UK economy was in freefall: for a commercial station, they had less money than the BBC which was already low by most standards lol. The lack of budget, unfortunately, really....REALLY shows! I got fed up after a couple of years, as the cast kept changing! At least with Dr Who, you knew he was going to show up next week lol!

Loved this as a kid, I had the book too. The effects got even cheaper and more cheesy later on! Also - talking computers - the first was probably on Star Trek, as long as you don’t count robots.

I rewatched some of these. Flaky was an understatement Much preferred Ace of Wands and the terrifying Timeslip

The pilot story involved aliens and spaceships and was extremely flaky. Production values far below the flake adverts.

Nice one Steve, really enjoyed watching that, took me right back to my junior school days where if you had almost any groovy looking belt you could be a "Tomorrow People" and jaunt at will 😉

Thanks for the video, it was nice to look back and get some background info. I used to watch this in the UK when I was a kid. The opening music alone would scare the crap pout of me. My mum knew the program gave me nightmares and would switch it over to another channel. Then mum would go and prepare dinner and I would quietly switch the channel back to The Tomorrow People. Lo and behold I would have nightmares again that very night

I loved that series. Ok, the plots and special effects may have been a bit shaky, but I never missed an episode.

Went to a special afternoon at the BFI . They showed episodes of The Tomorrow People and a Q&A with Nicholas Young and author Andy Price. It was a lovely nostalgic afternoon

I loved this as a kid but nobody else i knew did, who would have guessed that would be the theme of my life?

Ooh, I got weird flashback vibes from the opening credits there, I think the music must’ve weirded me out as a kid. Yes I was a watcher and fan in the 70s and I wanted to be the next evolution of humanity, so this was a heady dose of nostalgia. Cheers!

The Tomorrow People was broadcast by Thames T.V. at 4.25 so I could never get home to see it unless it was the holidays, So the dent in Blue Peter's audience must have been won an hour before Blue Peter was broadcast. A great feature.

The second series featuring Elizabeth Adare was broadcast at 4.50pm. I'm guessing this clashed with Blue Peter.
