My mom give this picture book in my childhood and I read though this again and again. The pictures are beautiful and the descriptions sound tender and comfortable, I, as a small kid, really loved this. Great to hit this video clip! From Japan
I don't blame you! This story doesn't even have any cultural or nostalgic significance to me, and I didn't hear it until I was an adult, but there is something so warm, comforting and profound about it. It definitely made an impression, even on this childless outsider. Amazing!
Such a memorable book from my childhood! Thanks for helping me remember it. I recall being so compelled by notion of the gentle, bearded fellow watching people while they slept - faintly unsettling but also comforting and lovely.
I heard this on Australian TV myself at some point in the late 80s, early 90s, but it had a different narrator... anyone else familiar with the version I might be thinking of?
Most interesting thing is that the horse and dog Pålle/Polle and Karo are called just "gelding" and "guard" in finnish translation :D I think finnish translator has tried to reach some minimalistic state in the work... The horse is called Sam the Shirehorse in the english storytape? luls Sam and Buster, yeah :D
