I search for growing herbs and your video popped up. Over 40 years I have canned and raised 80% of my food. The last 2 years I'm learning about growing my own herbs. I have found your channel very educational. Thank you

I'm glad you won't focus solely on freeze drying! :) It's cool, and interesting to watch you with the process. I'd love to have the ability for a variety of foods. But there is no way I will ever have one; not only is it way out of our budget, but there is literally no extra room in our tiny house. We know no one locally who would share one with us. We're really watching our electrical use. And at 71 it wouldn't "pay for itself" in my lifetime, because I buy almost no herbs anymore; I even save seeds so I don't have that expense. I'm happy with being old school, and happy you understand that a freeze dryer is not a possible choice for everyone. :) My basil can't survive our very cold winters, but I like the idea of sticking some of the seed heads in the ground in the fall! I will try that for sure. :)

Definitely on my mom list for myself this year haha. People don't realize how worth it this machine is. The shelf life alone makes it so worth it let alone the fact you can freeze dry ANYTHING. I'm a single mom of a 3 and 1 year old and I'd love to be able to freeze dry for assurance when the world goes more down the drain. About to graduate from ny master herbalist classes and I love your videos!

Load those trays up full! I would pick off the bad leaves and place the stems in the freeze dryer. The leaves won't blow around and it's easy to crumble them off the stems.

I can’t wait to get a freeze dryer!!! Although I’d really love for someone to come up with some competition for Harvest Right so we can hopefully get something more affordable! I want one soooo bad, and they may be worth the cost, it’s just still out of reach for us right now. Hopefully it won’t be too much longer 🙏🏼

Beware! Our freeze dryer has not worked more than it has worked. It is now out of warranty, and a worthless lump! We tried over the phone, paying the technicians and purchasing parts, which did not help. They now want us to ship it, at our expense to the factory for them to re-hab again. I think we are done. Buying the freeze dryer, was an enormous mistake for us!

Freeze dryers are amazing. The food you prep to FD can be put in the freezer. Air is the enemy. You have to put in a mylar bag or jar right away. Also light is an enemy. So many things to freeze dry and have on hand. It definitely extends the shelf life

My favorite freeze dried food hands down is bone broth. I love how simple it is to add boiling water & stir. 😋 Not only do I have a few jars of powdered broth which is equivalent to many many quarts/gallons reconstituted but I've emptied my freezers and shelves of valuable space. Not to mention the preservation of the nutrients.

You simply drain into a bucket. I use a 5 gal bucket and empty about every three loads. Always make sure your hose is not in the water.

I have started using BOTH air/machine-dehydrated herbs (temp always kept below 105 F, I use air-dried and machine-dried interchangeably) AND freeze-dried herbs in my preparations. Why? Because heat IS a component of freeze drying. It's not a lot of heat and not terribly high, but I'm hedging my bets by mixing together both methods of preservation just in case some of the important constituents of my herbs are being damaged by heat or cold. I was surprised to learn about the heating during the freeze-drying process myself. Those trays are heated and often (I would say usually, but I'm trying to be conservative) reach temps well over 115 F. Does the material ON the trays reach these temps? Hard to say unless it is a solid mass that you can stick a calibrated thermometer into. I have tested solid masses of pre-frozen raw scrambled eggs for myself and they did indeed reach at least 120 F during processing. I'm leery of heating my herbs much over 105 F and keep temps lower than 100 F if I can afford the extra drying time. Again, I'm trying to be conservative and err on the side of caution in order to preserve all nutrients and active components of my material. You obviously know how heat can degrade some of the constituents of our herbs and materials. I'd like to direct you to a YT channel called SchoolReports. He keeps detailed and exhaustive records of his freeze dry process and results with weights, temps, moisture. Very scientific. Truly a marvelous resource. He's also responsive to comments and questions. I am so grateful for the information you share. I've learned so much from you! I hope this small tidbit of information is not construed as criticism or negative. My purpose is simply to share something I learned along my journey. I deeply respect your commitment to becoming a capable herbalist and a superb teacher. Again, thank you and best regards.

No one said every herbalist had to buy one. Or that you couldn't be a serious herbalist. But what I did say was that if you are already buying freeze dried herbs (which a lot of herbalists are for certain reasons), then it may be cheaper to just own your own freeze dryer. Some clinical herbalists buy freeze dried herbs. Regular everyday herbalists typically don't. Some herbalist prefer freeze dried for longevity of shelf life. It's all in preference.

Hello, I’m sure you receive many responses and questions apologies if this has been asked. I am new to your channel. Is there a good comparison between freeze drying, pulling out essential oils, tincturing, making tonics, etc? Once the freeze drying is complete can the plant still be used is a tea, tincture, etc with the same results as fresh plant matter? I just started learning how to make tinctures and teas, etc a couple of years ago. I have been growing more and more in my gardens every year for the past 5-6 years in an effort to grow medicinal plants, fruits and veggies, bushes and shrubs, etc. practice and learn as fast as I can. I forage quite a bit as well, so many beautiful plants all around us most people consider as sets and weeds. Thank you for sharing your experiences and wisdom🙏🏼🙏🏼💗💗😉

I have the small one. It's only my husband & I know. Broth can take a longer time. My 2 qts took 40+ hours. Beware of the fat content. It will take even longer. Why I refrigerated my first to get the fat out.
