I haven't built a model in nearly 50 years but find myself drawn to modelling channels and are amazed at the standard of work using materials that we never has access to - for armour 'Nightshift' is a must see! My favourite from way back? The Airfix 1:72 P61 Black Widow in the matt black nightfighter guise. Although the 1:72 EE Lightning, now you mention it... Thank you and keep up the excellent work.
Hi Dave, Thanks for watching the video. We are very fortunate to have so many resources available to us these days. Can you see yourself picking up a tube of glue before long? I could be wrong but I think that P61 has been released as a vintage classic from Airfix. All the best, Pete.
Hi Pete, I have just come across your channel and what a breath of fresh air. I love your choice of kits although I am currently going through a military vehicle phase. Good luck with your surgery, you will have lots of models to keep you occupied afterwards and what better way to recuperate, cheers.
Thanks Steven. You’ve got a good point, after the last video was published I did think that there should’ve been a tank in there particularly as I have some 1/35 vehicles and some old vintage classics. The thing I find about building vehicles is that you can be a bit more adventurous with weathering, especially on tracked vehicles. Glad you enjoyed the video and I’ll be back again soon
My dad had both hips done and was thankful for both. All the best for that. I never built the Airfix B17, I had the Revell Memphis belle, but that was over 50 years ago and not the one they do now. I like your list and I have the first 2 in my stash too. I wish they would do the earlier Mossies, the FB VI and the B IV. I loved my old FB VI. Another I liked was the old Lightning F1. I have an F2 to build but wish they would do an F1 again. I have the perfact diorama in mind for it if only they would, otherwise I might have to find the F1 to F2 conversion article in Airfix magazine and do it the other way. Happy Birthday. PS I've subscibed hoping to see some diorama stuff.
Hi Pete love watching your videos, been watching since the first ones you did, look after yourself especially after your big operation on your hip, and a great choice for your ten recovery builds, well done mate.
Hi Stephen, thank you for being a loyal viewer. That’s very kind of you. It’s amazing that I’ve done almost 100 videos now including about half a dozen shorts so I’ll have to think up something super special for the Centenary! Thanks for staying in touch and best wishes from me .
Hope the surgery went well. Very envious of your Whitley. I missed getting the GR VII and like you I'm a fan of the air-sea combo. I keep praying Airfix will re-release the kit. Then again, I'll have to get 2 since I like interwar/wartime civilian aircraft too.
Thank you very much for your comment and I’m glad to say that I’m home again now . I still have the burning urge to build the coal command Whitley so that’s likely to be first.. Standby for a new video later on, cheers Pete
Humbrol products are awful now. Paints terrible, mini pots in airfix but even the 2nd gen acrylic bottles. I go with Vallejo and AK after many trials. Pure acrylic. Try their varnishes. AK have a newish one called Intermediate Gauzy Agent ( sounds like a crime character not a satin varnish) Nice and thin and water based. They have their thinners. Inter branding rarely works. And Ammo Mugs varnish selection excellent. All the best with your op,and enjoy convalescing as only a true modeller aka plastic nut can!! All your choices are great,10/10 and im jealous of your set-up and meeting James May. Well deserved im sure. Happy modelling and show us your finished results when you can please. I love a Whittely. Unsung heros.
Thank you I certainly will show the Whitley when it’s done. I’m enjoying using AK paints and I’m starting to collect a few now I’ve never used Vallejo though because I have always been pretty settled with Aqua colour from revel and the occasional humbrol pot small work. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching the video. Best wishes, Pete.
@petewatch out for that Sea Harrier kit.comes with a ww2 era pilot and extra ordance and a refuling probe that theinstructions DONT show howvor where to fit.splasticplayground7791
Went to Chatham navy day when I were a lad and went onboard HMS Fearless, gave me a love of all things military. Hope your hip op goes well, and follow it up with the physio work - you'll be right as reign in no time.
Sage advice Hugh thank you yes keeping moving is critical too many people just sit around after the operation and don’t build up the muscle again but I’ll make sure I’m active. I’ve always been fascinated by those two amphibious type ships the fact that they can flood that lower deck so that the landing craft can enter an exit is fascinating. All the best, Pete.
6:42 No need to beat yourself up over a 'misplaced' antenna - it's actually a D/F loop (Direction Finding) which is manually rotated to obtain bearings from ground based transmitters and thus determine aircraft position by means of a two station 'fix'. Hope this helps. All the best for your surgery.
@@petesplasticplayground7791 *Hampden Part 120 D/F Loop Retractable Version* As Kenneth mentions, it is a Direction Finding Loop, so it is meant to be rotatable (360 Degrees). The one on the “Flying Suitcase” is retractable and has a fairing on top of it so it fits flush with the fuselage (so it perfectly fine to display it “retracted” … as “it’s not lost, it’s retracted!”). Probably best to fashion the oval from some suitable wire as the kit one is slightly too thick (IMHO) if you are doing the retractable version. Here’s a couple of links to a contemporary manual showing the very busy cockpit, and, one to the remaining Hampden in Langley, B.C. www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwiY3tnEr9aFAxXYDzQIHVMmB9YQFnoECBUQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fstephentaylorhistorian.files.wordpress.com%2F2020%2F04%2Fhampden.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1Ord1LKbTRqeu4PE-LlGfH&opi=89978449 www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234966292-handley-page-hp52-hampden/ = = = = = *HMS Fearless* “Nobody does it better” (closing scene) … or was that Intrepid? Anyways, another worthy choice. Here’s to a successful hip surgery, and, a very fantastic recovery set of builds! = = = = =
Great choice of kits. The Fearless what a kit!! Im waiting for a hip too. Best of luck with your op. Just suggestion to make your vids even better perhaps use a personal mike to keep your interesting commentary on the one level whilst using multi cameras. Brilliantly presented thanks
Thanks, Stuart. I enjoyed making that selection. You are spot on about the sound Mike the set up is a bit some rudimentary was just four mobile devices . But my production team are on it!
Windsor and newton galleria acrylic matt varnish is the stuff you want never had an issue with it and thin with clean water And i use either floor wax or gauzy for gloss no issues ever
Whitley is the only kit I have two of. After building the coastal command I wanted to do the civilian one. AK varnishes are good and can be brushed on too!
@@petesplasticplayground7791 Not yet. I have it on the todo list for this year though. Is unusual the way it goes together and was an enjoyable build. My wife got me it for Christmas and I did the coastal command scheme but wanted to do the civilian one so got another.
Hi. Some very nice kits there, especially the newly tooled one's. Should keep you busy during your recuperation, good luck with that by the way. I noticed that there were no Spits or Hurries or any German opposition, what didn,t fancy any of them ? I liked the look of the Hampden, is that a new tool or not ? I remember finding out that one crashed in Dartford in Kent not far from where I worked. There's a plaque on the wall, but not much detail of the particular aircraft or crew. Thats a shame. I suppose someone would know about it. Any way nice vid and some lovely models. Good luck to you.
Hi Brian, thanks for the message. I’m sorry for the slow reply mate. I have built plenty of the types you mention in the past, but it was pure coin instance that they didn’t appear in this list also and coincidentally I was given a ME110 for Father’s Day I’m glad you enjoyed watching the video and thank you for leaving the comment. Interesting about finding the crash near Dartford.
Hi Pete it's Ash, good luck with your hip replacement, i had a new hip June last year and i feel much better no pain. I fancy having a go at building the Wellington mk 8 coastal command, I use a paint brush and acrylic paint. Could you do a video showing how you'd build and paint it please? I keep getting confused, do i build before i paint, do i paint before i build, i never know what's easier
Hi Ash, thank you for watching and for your comment, when I built my Wellington, I’ve painted the interior in quite some detail and then once I assembled the whole model I painted the whole thing black just as an experiment then I painted the white and then once I finished that I did the upper surfaces camouflage having marked off the white. I did mine in acrylic paint with a brush. I’ll look back in my Google Photos and see if I took any of the build while it was in progress.
I always liked the fact that AIRFIX was the first to produce a model that no one else had done. I'm going to be a little specific in choice by saying that we had the first ever hovercraft prototype SR N1, then we had the SR N4. Airfix missed the boat by not making an SR N6. So a 1/72 and/or 1/35 version would absolutely compliment a historical range that was unique to the U.K. Just saying ;-)
Just a suggestion...when you hold up a marvelous and incredible Airfix kit to show to your viewers...try holding it still. Avoid juggling and shaking. Your video has some very interesting model choices. Thank You for sharing. Good Luck with your procedure and get better quickly.
Thanks Brian. Yes, that’s a very good point. Actually, you’re right I should do that. I tend to get a bit overexcited and animated I’m afraid but I shall take heed of your advice.. Thanks for watching, and I’ll see you next time
Airfix are re-releasing the Hampden this year as part of their Vintage Classics range. Whilst nice to have it available again, it really is time that they brought out a New Tool Hampden (it would fit well with their New Tool Wellingtons and Whitley. I built one of the last "Red Box" (2010) issues quite recently and I have to say that the moulds are obviously getting very tired. I found the fit wasn't great - especially the wings to the fuselage. I still enjoyed the build and the end product but I really think that they should be looking at a brand new up to date tooling in the near future. The "aerial" you broke off on your previous Hampden is actually the RDF Loop. (RDF - Radio Direction Finder). Believe it or not, it was fully rotatable by the navigator from inside so that he could obtain radio "fixes" (a bit like the way we used to rotate our old AM/Medium Wave transistor radios to pick up Radio Luxembourg better). So, showing it sideways on would not have been 100% wrong - although when not in use they were usually placed parallel to the airflow to reduce drag - or even fully retracted. Later RDFs were contained within a streamlined fairing. Airfix provides the alternative type of RDF fitting in the Hampden kit. And best of luck with the op.
Cracking kit to start your Top 10 and one that is missing out of my stash I look forward to seeing yours once done. Best wishes with the Hip operation 👍
Well the very best of luck Pete for the op, your recuperation and the recovery builds. That lovely selection would be at least a year's worth of work for me and thats with two old but thankfully still functioning hips!
@petesplasticplayground7791 Best of luck with the hip replacement. You won't know yourself after you've recovered. I've had both hips done and what a different they've made to my quality of life. You'll be trotting up and downstairs and walking to the model shop like a youngster😊.
Happy Birthday Pete, hope the op all went as planned and you are soon comfortable enough to spend some time in the playground. Take care, I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Funky editing! Wishing you all the best with your surgery & recovery. Do you think you'll complete all 10 kits? Regardless, make the most of your forthcoming free time and be sure to share everything to your audience!
I was very proud of my son for creating the video the way he did. He’s got a great imagination in setting up the angles and so on. Will build them all while I’m off. I doubt it and as Joe said at the end my birthday is coming in the stash might increase.! I’ll definitely be making regular updates though so watch this space thanks for watching.
This is the first of your videos I've watched. I am such an airfix fan. The first kit I did, after 35 years, was the 72nd wildcat. I now have 6 in my stash. Lol. Good luck with your surgery. Cheers from Nova Scotia
Thanks for watching my video and it’s good to know that you share the passion. That little wildcat is an intriguing kit isn’t it with so many delivery options to choose from
Have one airfix kit in my stash of 75 1/48 kits a hawk T1 Trainer its main wings are a bit warpped at the tips one kit i might be interested in is the s2 buccaneer 1/48 but 60 quid is a bit much for what it is just got the AMK mig 31 foxhound for 40 quid in 1/48.
Excellent upload. I subbed. I have most of these planes. Love World War Two aircraft, such beautiful planes. Recently purchased the Mosquito. I built a 1/48 scale as a kid. It was my second model. My first was a Matchbox Spitfire. I think I just dated myself 🤣😂🤣😂.
I’ve done some larger scales including1/48 more recently 1/24 hurricane. That reminds me I haven’t shown the completed version of that on RU-vid yet so that might be my next video. I can’t say I particularly enjoyed doing that larger scale because it dragged on and on and on I building the engine and the framework for it, but I found the bigger parts a bit tedious as well as the paint job. I’ll stick to one/48 below. Best wishes, Pete.
had my 2nd hip replacment in january you wont be doing much for the first 6 weeks thats for sure and tbh siting down for long periods is not what is needed I was walking 3 miles a day for weeks on sticks sorry to be a kill joy but having had 2 hips replaced now it was a knackering time .I wish you good luck with the op its a very routine op but still a very big one all the best neil
No you’re absolutely right now. It’s important to build up the muscle when I had my first hip replacement in November 22. I was pretty much up and about after six days. I was getting up every morning and de icing my wife’s car. I was driving after four weeks, so it was a really good recovery but realistically, I will have more time at the workbench to Phil so as I’m at home not at work, I shall make most of the opportunity. Thanks for watching the video.
Good luck with your op and recovery, I trust refreshments are all a part of the recovery process, I think you IT personnel need mention and pay rise!!😂
Good video and interesting concept. Good luck with the operation. Great idea to integrate your hobby into your recovery plans! The Whitley is a solid choice, and the Lightning.
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your wishes regarding my operation. I’ll make sure that I make some videos about the build and the completed model. Take care Pete.
Yes good luck on your surgery. Hope it goes well. You've inspired me to do coastal command schemes. Other than flying boats I've just done a Shackleton. I really liked how it turned out. Heavily weathered the white.
It’s amazing the variety of aircraft that were used in coastal command over the years. Also, when you’re weathering them, you can put a bit of rust on to hide any little accidents!
Any English types on here? Why do I enjoy building Airfix kits?? Almost like an addiction...I even tend to drink tea when building them...TEA for God's sake...I don't like American football, or NASCAR....prefer European football and Rally style racing....had two Austin Healys that I sorely miss...I'm an American. .what's happened...this isn't normal...20+ Airfix kits all under construction...but I order more....is this what 'going down the rabbit hole' looks like???
Hi Pete new subscriber to your channel, I'm also a newbie to the world of modelling, I inherited my brother in laws set up ,and it's got everything I need to get going from a sparmax compresor with airbrushes and a spray booth , paints to glues and lots of models all unmaid and boxed ,it's a shame as he never got to use any of his kit due to him having cancer so it's special to me to have been left all his models and kit , looking forward to having a go but want to watch a few more of your videos first 😊
Well, it’s good news that your brother-in-law‘s equipment has gone to such a good home. Thanks for subscribing to the channel and I hope you enjoy your future modelling.
ICM will be releasing a 1/48 Handley Page Hampden next year and I can't wait! 😁 Excellent video and choices of kits.... Airfix definitely has some of the best boxarts around today!
If I may, Pete, I can highly recommend Airfix Stuka - it goes together particularly well and although I've always hated watching footage of it with that ear splitting, terrifying scream it made during it's dive, I've always found it a fascinating design. It looks really 'Clunky' to me considering the manoeuvres it was built to do! 👍🏻
HMS Fearless, from what I remember some 45 years ago was a nice kit (Belfast was another good one) and I have bought it again to build soon. Looking forward to seeing these on your bench Pete.👍👍😉
Yes the Fearless kit is quite good for its time, I’ve seen some that have been built to an extremely high standard with extra detail added such as hand rails, et cetera
Built HMS Fearless as a kid in the 70s and was fascinated with the landing craft and helicopter.Made it four times since but I don’t have any of them anymore. However I picked up an old unmade 70s kit along with about 20 other kits in a big box at a jumble sale for $20.Mostly Airfix.Bargain.There is a lot on the to do list
I saw a picture of one that somebody had built on Facebook recently and put it in a diorama. It was absolutely fantastic. They had a lot of activity with the landing craft and the helicopters on Little post flying around and the model of the ship itself was superb. they’ve gone to the trouble of putting extra railings on and so on.
BOAC HAD SOME VERY INTERESTING OPS DURING THE WAR , THEY USED MOSQUITOS TO SMUGGLE BEARINGS FROM GKN BEARINGS IN SWEDEN FOR PRODUCTION HERE AND ALSO TO SMUGGLE SPIES ETC
What about Avro Shackleton, and also Nimrod? ( Not sure if there is a Nimrod kit....) As an air scout years ago flew in both out of RAF Kinloss and RAF St Mawgen. Fanastic aircraft and such memories.
Yes, you’re absolutely right. I do have a shack in the stash. I don’t know about Nimrod though. What an excellent experience for you to fly those marvellous aircraft. Best wishes, Pete.
I hope your surgery went well. I just had surgery myself on May 14th and am healing up well - and doing lots of modeling. Love your 10 Most-Looked-Forward-To List. I also appreciate the tone and pace of your videos. Easy to listen to, full of good ideas and no screaming or ranting - just pointing out the things you enjoy. Cheers!
Hi Eric, I hope your recovery is going as well as mine is. I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. There’s a new one being uploaded today and hopefully another one at the weekend.
Great choice of a top ten! Looking forward to the first build. My favourite is the mosquito. Cant tell you why although I first built one 50 years ago.👍
Thank you very much for being there Gary appreciate your subscribing and I hope you enjoy watching more content next time. All the best to you and I’ll see you next time.
The best thing about Airfix is not its fine panel lines or its scarce and rough general and particular detail, the best thing is that they are kits with a low price. Wait wait, not that either because after Brexit it is now even more expensive than those from Eduard or Arma Hobby...😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣
@@petesplasticplayground7791 Of course, those are called Tamiya, Eduard, Hasegawa, Arma Hobby and even IBG, Academy or Fujimi. If even brands like ICM or Zvezda are much better and cheaper than Airfix... There is nothing that makes you buy Airfix, except that it is something manufactured in perfidious Albion....
When a friend of mine had a hip replacement, he said that he wished he had done it years earlier. And build some models when you're "high on painkillers," you might come up with some interesting inventions! Most of what I build now are 'What if?' models, and I do them straight and sober!
Lol yes, I know what you mean, when I had my last hip done in Nov22 I found I became quite tired quite quickly, so I'll pace myself, The big question is "what if" you hadnt built anything - so its all worthwhile. All the best Pete.
