Thanks for the suggestion on sticking with plants! As a Matrix fan, I use it for my Cichlid tanks. Any tips for high nitrates? My tank's at over 50 PPM, and I suspect overstocking might be the cause.

What type of fish do you have in there and the size? It's common if the tank is establish and the fish grow for that to happen.

For sump if saltwater a refugium with cheato or algae turf scrubber. For Freshwater refugium with plants, turf scrubber, or biohome.

dirt, sand and lots of live plants - more more more plants. That's the best way of removing nitrates - not by subjecting your tank to chemicals.

I have kept fish for over fifty years. I was a manager of retail fish stores, I managed wholesale fish rooms, I have bred dozens of exotic tropical fish species. During that career I have seen lots of products with many amazing claims to solve this or that aquarium problem. They are all garbage. In fact I use no "chemical aids" in any of my tanks. The ONLY thing I use is sodium thiosulfate for chlorine removal. The simple truth is water changes are the answer. I guess that is a slight over-statement. To have long term success in aquarium keeping just follow these 6 simple rules: 1) Stock tanks appropriately, both in number and type of fish for the size of the aquarium. Overcrowding is bad news for the fish and hobbyist. Make sure tank-mates are appropriate for the community you want to create. 2) Provide adequate filtration/appropriate water movement. 3) Do not overfeed. Almost all hobbyists are guilty of overfeeding. 4) Properly maintain all filtration devices. 5) I use terrestrial houseplants with roots dangling into the tank. This is an amazingly effective method for nitrate removal, and is also very aesthetically pleasing. 6) Avoid chemicals additives. Many will cause unanticipated problems along with not solving the original problem. And most importantly>7) Water changes, water changes, water changes. I do 80% -90% changes every other week. Using this method I have successfully kept hundreds of species of fish, plants and invertebrates for over five decades. Good luck and Have a nice Day!😀

I would give up doing that much in water changes. I know I’m spoiled I run a lot of saltwater tanks that often don’t need water changes. And for large freshwater systems I’ve built sumps which helps a bunch. Not everyone uses sumps or use a bunch of plants or want to do water changes that much. Hence why this video was created and why I put the most practical solutions in the front of the video before the products. I love terrestrial plants. I would use them if my cats weren’t so curious lol

@@AquariumStoreDepotLarge cichlids frequently develop hole in the head disease from nitrate toxicity. I have a 15 year old 18 inch Midas cichlid that shows no signs of any disfiguring illness. She is very healthy. I have 2 colonies of Diamond tetras that have been breeding for over a decade. These are just two are examples of my system.This is only a small part of why I recommend so many water changes. I don't keep saltwater tanks. Too much hassle, work, and expense, got my fill of that working in a wholesale Tropical Fish business. I don't care what anybody says, simply doing water changes is the safest, most cost effective way to manage water chemistry, as proven by decades of successfully keeping and breeding all types of freshwater organisms.
