Nickelback is a Canadian rock band formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta. It is composed of guitarist and lead vocalist Chad Kroeger, guitarist, keyboardist and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair. It went through several drummer changes between 1995 and 2005, achieving its current lineup when Adair replaced Ryan Vikedal.
Nickelback is one of the most commercially successful Canadian rock bands, having sold more than 50 million albums worldwide.[1] In 2009, Billboard ranked it the most successful rock group of that decade; "How You Remind Me" was the best-selling rock song and the fourth-best overall. The band ranked at No. 7 on the Billboard top artist of the decade list, with four albums among the publication's top albums of the decade.[2]
The band signed with Roadrunner Records in 1999 and re-released its once-independent second studio album The State.[3] This album was commercially successful, as was its follow-up, Silver Side Up, in 2001.[4] The band then released its biggest hit, "How You Remind Me", a No. 1 on the Billboard and Canadian Singles Charts.[5] The fourth album, The Long Road, was released in 2003 and spawned five singles, including Canadian No. 1 "Someday", which also reached No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100.[6]
In 2005, the band's best-selling album to date, All the Right Reasons, produced three top-ten and five top-twenty singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Photograph", "Far Away", and "Rockstar".[5] Dark Horse sold well in 2008, producing eight singles, one cracking the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 and two in the top twenty. In 2011, the seventh album, Here and Now, topped the charts.[7][non-primary source needed] The eighth, No Fixed Address, was released in 2014,[8] followed by Feed the Machine in 2017.
Nickelback is based in Vancouver, British Columbia. It published through EMI Canada before signing a global distribution deal with Roadrunner Records. For Here and Now, it left EMI Canada for Universal Music Canada.

1:06:34, Sounds really similar to the case of Arrested Development (the hip hop group), which Todd covered in a Trainwreckords episode. Long story short, a multitude of factors related to changing trends and public perception (in addition to conflict between group members) pretty much doomed their sophomore album before it was released. As you might’ve guessed, the album sold disappointing numbers, and Arrested Development fell off so badly that their influence in the early 90s Atlanta scene was almost completely erased from public memory. This was all in spite of the fact that the final product deviated very little in sound from their highly acclaimed debut.

I will never forget that Mike Vanderjagt missed FG, one of my earlier NFL memories. At least Colts won the SB the next season. I'm really curious about Huck Jones. I believe the reason why he faded from the earth was because those unpaid fees to the cameraman. He rather preferred to disappear rather than pay him I guess lol. Luke's cameo was awesome! I'm already happy that the opening reminded me that Knights of Cydonia exists, but nevertheless, here's my reactions: 10: I guess it could have worked better if it sounded more korny! (sorry, I'll never get tired of making that joke) 9: The name was kinda cool, but Cobra Starship didn't do much for me. Chromeo does their aesthetic better and with better music. Different genre, but still. 8: God, at least "The Man Without Fear" had some energy. 7: Now I'm tempted to replace the "OOOOOOH" in the opening with a slowed down sample of MC Ride yelling "OW!". 6: Yeah, not saying they're great, but Nickelback are too entertaining for me to truly despise them. Plus, Chad Kroeger's one of those people encouraging Devin Townsend to do wacky things, and I can't fault him for that. (I also admittedly have a soft spot for Billy Gibbons' "I'll have the quesadilla" line in "Rockstar", but partly 'cause "quesadilla" is a fun word) 5: Oh hey, it's the band that tells everyone that Batista is here! (and I guess they also did that Peter Gunn cover for the 2001 SpyHunter remake, and gave Rocked a funny running joke) 4: “I just had seeeeeeex, and it felt so goooood…” 3: Umm…nope, I haven’t heard of him. Would rather have “Oh Yeah” by Yello. 2: JEEZUS. HM: Man, Marshall Dutton’s singing sounds like someone doing karaoke for “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” and not at all taking it seriously. HM: What happened to Hoobastank? I know what - Doug Robb’s not a peeeeeerfect peeeeeersoooooon! HM: Should’ve dug up that cat mascot they used to have in their glam days. HM: Oy, I like Keane! 😠 (To be fair though, that song’s not exactly Crystal Ball/Nothing In My Way-tier) HM: I didn’t like that song of theirs from the iPod ads. HM: Nope, already did the pun. HM: Where that song comes from isn’t all that great. 1: Oh god, I remember that song. I also remember how ubiquitous it got to the point where piano players hated it getting requested. And then it became something of a meme among people I know, all “Untitled” by Simple Plan-like. Their other hit, “Over My Head (Cable Car)” was way better. All in all, a splendid watch with the odd hit of nostalgia. Hats off to you, Crash.

Ohhhh this was awesome. So I was 8/9 years old in 2006, so the music in this video was all either stuff I didn’t know or stuff that I only listened to as an adult. It’s really fun getting your takes on the trends and influences of that era as someone who had a better sense of what the scene was like at the time! That being said, you will never be able to convince me that “Don’t Wait” is a bad song, Chris Carabba’s vocals will live in my soft lil emo heart forever. Edit: “HOW TO SAVE A LIFE”??? Oh my nostalgia goggles are FIRMLY on my head for that one. Your thoughts on it are valid and you make some good points. But… the minute I heard that piano intro, my heart went into my throat. I was seven years old when these songs came out. If there's anything I can remember about what radio stations tended to play in 2006, it's that those piano ballad songs like #1, "Bad Day", and "Chasing Cars" were *EVERYWHERE.* Even though nowadays I have somewhat of a newfound appreciation for them, I absolutely hated them at the time. It was the sort of music you'd hear playing in a hospital waiting room as you leaned your head against the wall and yawned the entire time. That being said, I probably would have still taken those whiny piano songs over whatever trash-tier post-grunge was all over the charts in those days. Nickelback was unavoidable, and those Hinder and Buckcherry songs were godawful then and they're still godawful now. Anyway, this video was fun and nostalgic. I'm really liking these "top ten songs by year" videos you've been making - would you be interested in doing more in the future?

One of the coolest things about 2006 is that “Crazy Bitch” and “How To Save A Life” were often played on the same rock & alternative stations (even though both songs are ass). Never would take place today. I couldn’t decide for myself if I’d put Buckcherry or Hinder at #1…it would have to be #1, not merely because the songs were awful, but because they led alternative into a very dark place that it had never experienced before, which led to Saving Abel, which led to My Darkest Days, which led to Alternative completely abandoning rock music because those bands were all such turds.

I was in college and pretty much exclusively listening to post punk music at this point, so I missed all but the most inescapable of these. I had forgotten how limp and formulaic a lot of the chart hits were. And I had expected emo to be way more present. For all the backlash it received, you'd think it was this major monetary success, in order to justify the push back. But no, it was just kids liking stuff that was different than what the newly minted adults listened to growing up. Nostalgia kids, emo was disproportionately loathed at the time, and you really didn't see a whole lot of the typical emo teen we think about today. They got bullied pretty hard. It's a real pity adults tried their damnedest to ruin their fun.

I actually remember myself listening to Twisted Transistor quite a lot back in the day. So, I must have liked it back then. I always just kinda assumed it was about the radio, maybe something about payola and radio politics. Since radios have transistors, and they repeat that so much in the chorus. Almost feels like that's what it should have been about. But, nope. Guess this is my "Born In The USA", 'cause I sure as hell did a fine job totally ignoring the lyrics, I guess :D

I still like parts of How to Save a Life. I think the chorus works, but I agree that some of the other lyrics are really awkward and just bad in spots. There is one you brought up that I had a different take on; "Drive until you lose the road or break from the ones you follow". To me, the fist part is referring to driving yourself into a corner, where there's no path back for you, and the second is talking about breaking away from toxic influences around you. Basically "If you don't get out now you'll end up at rock bottom with no options left".
@EmoGenderedSlut
@EmoGenderedSlut Год назад
I've never imagined "How to Save a Life" had anything remotely to do with suicide, more of just breaking apart your own relationships, burning past bridges, and replaying those mistakes in your head. I literally can't imagine a world where "Let him know that you know best, cause after all you do know best" is taken literally? It's delivered as insulting and ironically as possible in the song itself.
@EmoGenderedSlut
@EmoGenderedSlut Год назад
Also, it's basically impossible to understand all the words of the song, so at points it becomes ideas and vibes, and I never got them confused (like 98% of songs require me to read the lyrics alongside the song to have a chance of even understanding them all, and whether I remember them correctly is still up in the air).

I still like How to Save a Life. While I can understand your points on it, I cannot in good conscience say it's worse than songs like Crazy B**** or Lips of an Angel. The lyrics and delivery can come across as problematic now that you mention it, but I do have memories of my parents playing that CD on car rides, so I can stick up for it. Also, my dad thinks Rockstar is one of the most awesomely bad songs of all time. But regardless, great video as always, Crash!

I really liked The Fray when I first heard them. This was at the same time I was first getting into Coldplay and also touching on Keane, so they fit right in. Spoilers, I still love Coldplay and I have a special place in my heart for those first two Keane hits, but The Fray.... So...I won't get into any more detail than necessary. There was an assembly at my high school one year in the wake of tragedy. I knew the person. How To Save A Life was playing as we all filed into the gymnasium.

Very fun video, worth a wait. Might as well write my opinions on songs here: 10-I don't care for Korn either, but recently I decided to give their entite catalogue a shot. Some stuff I ended liking(mainly Issues, which I think is their best album) and some were...See You on The Other side. Bad album and this is bad song. 9-I like this band fine but yeah, not one of their best songs. 8-Rob is a singles artist and this is definitely one of his weakest singles for arguably his weakest album. 7-Emo is my favourite genre. Regardless of era, wave, anything, if it's emo I probably gonna like it. That said, I guess Dashboard Confessional really are "you have to be there" kind of act, cause their appeal misses me completely. 6-Nickelback are overhated. This song tho, pretty damn bad. 5-Awful. Just like every other Saliva song. 4-Suckcherry. Also, sex workers and retail workers deserve better. 3-Literally who? Dunno, but this song wasn't good enough to make me interested in finding that out. Also, PAY YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER! 2-I unapolagetically love TFK. Not Christian and I can admit that they can be very corny, but their stuff from Phenomenon onward I mostly dig. That said, I not gonna cry over you slandering Move. It's not one of my favourite TFK songs and your gripes are understandable. Dishonoranble mentions: DM1-I kind of like the melody, but outside of that- bad song. DM2-This song Hoobastinks. DM3-Never heard of it, but snippet sounds like crap. I also never liked Pantera DM4-meh DM5-Jet had maybe 1-2 solid songs in their catalogue, but this ain't one of them. DM6-There's one song I like from the album as well. It ain't this one. DM7-I'm still in my "get these wackos out of my face" phase when it comes to Weezer so yeah, I don't like it, obviously. 1-This band just sucks in general, but this is their only song I can remember. Atrocius, defnitely worth of number 1.

See You On The Other Side is, and has always been, my favorite Korn album. Say what you want about the extremely sexual lyrics throughout the album, but I feel like this album is where they found balance between the metal sound, the bit of rap they like to throw in every now and again, and the electronic elements. No one element takes complete dominance in a bad way. This is coming from someone that hates both rap and electronic music.

I really love the atmospheric industrial sound of the album. Especially on tracks like Throw Me Away, Open Up, and Seen it All. Sure some of the lyrics really don't hold up like say "10 or a 2 Way" Also there are some unreleased songs from that album that are amazing.

Korn is one of those bands that i love dearly, but understand why people don't like them. they're not very good live, Jonathan's voice can be grating sometimes, and they have songs that sound like straight up noise. but i have a soft spot for them because they're the whole reason i became a metalhead. i used to be a hip-hop head (and by that, i mean i only listened to Eminem) but then one day the song Daddy came on my RU-vid recommendations, and i loved it. it was so raw and dark, it drew me in and made me want more. if it wasn't for Korn, i would never know Slipknot, Tool, Rammstein, Evanescence, Coal Chamber, System Of A Down, Rage Against The Machine and every other kick-ass metal band.

I can see why a lot of bands don't step away from their formulas. When they do, they tend to get crapped on by the critics. I kinda wonder if Educated Horses was released by some lightweight singer instead of Rob Zombie's, would people be so down on it? I enjoyed Rob doing a sleazy carnival barker schtick myself. EDIT: Also, did Crash miss the point behind Rockstar? It's not a song glorifying the lifestyle, it's mocking and condemning it. That really changes how the song hits and kinda invalidates a lot of Crash's criticism against it.

This was an awesome video, I had a lot of fun. I have two things I want to say about this video: One, I'm pretty Rockstar was supposed to be tongue in-cheek and super dry on purpose. Knowing those guy's sense of humor it would make complete sense for them to write a self-depricating song about rockstars... doesn't make the song any better because I don't thing they pulled it off, but at least the song is slightly more interesting? (IDK) Two, speaking of different meanings, I had no idea about the idea behind How To Save A Life. I will 100% agree that is a fantastic idea for a song... with some botched execution. Also ngl, I basically never payed attention to that's lyrics outside of the chorus until this video and... uh... yeah. Not sure if it would've been my pick for the worst rock song of the year, but I completely understand it. Like I said to start, great video and I look forward to see what you put out next!

I think Lips of an Angel is a good song, the problem is so many people mistake it for a romantic song when it's absolutely not(you'd be surprised at how often it gets played at weddings) it's meant to be a dark cynical song. I agree that Hinder's lesser known songs are their best, I love "Up All Night", "Ladies Come First", "Wanna Be Rich" and "See You in Hell"

When Crash put the lyrics to “Twisted Transistor” up on the screen he showed great restraint not editing that one scene from Howard Stern’s “Private Parts.” You know what scene I’m talking about! He would’ve had to blur the whole screen but it does work with the lyrics.
