🔴 More about this video
Pleasureway has been evolving and improving the Ascent since they first introduced it in 2008. In that time it's become one of the best short Sprinter camper vans available here in North America. It is a quality coach with a great layout and a well thought out design that balances trade offs. It's not surprising that in 2018 Airstream came out with their Interstate 19, a close replica of the Ascent.
The Interstate 19 isn't an exact copy. It does offer some features that aren't available on the Ascent like: automatic blinds, a side view camera system, an air ride suspension and most importantly a 4-wheel drive option. If any of those things are important to you then the Airstream is the only way to go.
But if quality and attention to detail are important to you then the Ascent is the way to go. In fit and finish as well as materials the Ascent is superior to the Interstate 19. The sofa and ottomans use thicker memory foam, ottomans are attached to cushions so they don't fly around during travel and everything just has a more solid feel about it. That's all backed by Pleasureway's 5 year warranty - 2 years longer than Airstream's.

Thank you Neil for your extensive research and clear explanations! One point: without having seen either of these vans in person, I have to humbly say that, in my experience in the industrial and automotive manufacturing industries, "stall built" is not necessarily better quality than an assembly line. Having coaches individually built in parallel creates a significant quality consistency challenge. Quality depends on all of the workers being equally conscientious and skilled at multiple tasks. Whereas an assembly line is much more controllable with "specialists" at each station performing the same assembly tasks on every vehicle.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
thanks for sharing your thoughts john!
@evamaria644
@evamaria644 5 лет назад
I agree I worked on an assembly line and if something isn't right you have the ability to stop the line. In our factory, we rotated every hour so that one person would be proficient on each part that went into the vehicle after a while you just know the vehicle and how everything should feel. Just because something is massed produced doesn't mean it is of inferior quality. What you are really saying is that the workers aren't of the same quality or craftmanship or you're saying the material that American's use isn't of the same quality. Otherwise, how would he know that the ascent is built better he didn't compare any of these things.
@g.3046
@g.3046 2 года назад
I'm not even sure why Ultramobility mentions this! False and misleading statement in my opinion. Because Pleasureway is built in a stall does not mean the quality is automatically better than a production line! If you think Pleasureway is better quality than the Airstream Interstate 19 then give a define reason(s). Stalls vs. production lines may make a difference for building speed , but speed does not equal quality!

One thing not addressed is aesthetics. This may be personal, but I think most people would opine that the Airstream simply looks much nicer than the Pleasureway. Better stitching on upholstery , nicer counter top, richer wood finish with rounded corners, beautiful flooring, and that porthole on the bathroom door is a nice touch. Also the Airstream name has more cache associated with it, a Jaguar vs. a Volkswagen. I just feel like when you step into the Airstream you know you are in a $150,000 coach, where with the Pleasureway, for $150K, it is somewhat plain Jane.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
@Michael Tyler - yep i do mention that if you love the airstream brand then that's the only way to go. i've tried before commenting on aesthetics but it is so subjective. i just stopped commenting on it.

The sleeping three thing is easily remedied by just going to a Pleasureway dealer and ordering the uncomfortable blow up bed and using it in the Airstream .
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
Sure maybe. But the Ascent comes with it standard. Airstream should just offer it for the prices they are charging. Plus that third bed doesn’t do you much good if you can’t safely carry the third person in a 3pt seatbelt.
@jimbotheassclown
@jimbotheassclown 5 лет назад
The seat belts pass the highway safety regulations just fine . I still drive my 68 Dodge Coronet so I'm not that worried about lap belts . Would i use a child seat there no not even with a three point seat belt because you get rear ended and thats going to be a bad day regardless kids or adults. And let's face it both are 2 people RV's that blow up bed is a bad joke .

At the end of the day is which one is more likely to be around in three to five years because as the resent Hymer and Roadtrek bankruptcy a warranty is only good if the company stays in business that long and then the master upfitter debacle .

@rvboondocker2559
@rvboondocker2559 5 лет назад
Rhonda McCay That’s because it is quite confusing! You can look it up on the Internet and you will see a few videos and get some pretty good explanations. Basically, the larger the number of amp hours the more power you can draw per hour and the longer your battery will last per charge. That is very basic. It depends on how many amps each of the pieces of equipment that you use will draw and then you would add that up. It is generally measured I think over 20 hours or something like that. Also , You never want to run your battery down all the way. Non lithium batteries are happy down to about 50% while Lithium battery give you full power down to about 10%. It also keeps the battery life stable for a longer period of time, if you don’t run it down to low.

Problem with so many of the company-built Class-B RV's the layout of the bathroom and the lack of ADA mobility options. If someone (as in manufacturer) would have offered some type of option for ADA Mobility (bathroom) and plenty of leg room up front, we would probably own one by now. But we chose to go with a custom-built unit and expect to pick it up in Mid-August of 2019.

Thanks. With a swivel bathroom the Interstate 19 would be perfect. Or the Ascent. Really like your channel. You say (somebody says) people are leaving the big Airstreams for the small camper vans. They probably would like to keep as many of the creature comforts as possible in the smaller space. I think it would make an excellent series if you could suggest how that could be done. Starting with the swivel bathroom, of course. Again thanks.

@deniseracine6788
@deniseracine6788 5 лет назад
Ultramobility Funny you ask....Since we ordered it so long ago and were unable to pick it up until now it is actually a 2018 Sprinter and a 2019 PW unit. We debated (and still do) if we should transfer our deposit to the more recent model but it seems we got a very fair price at approx. 134,000$ including radius laminate cabinets, side/back screens, exterior paint, 190 watt solar package. Even after a few recent inquiries, I believe our price to be 10-15,000$ less than I have found anywhere throughout Canada for the 2018/2019 model. Apparently the newer models have the exact PW builds on the newer Sprinter chassis and would cost about 10,000$ more and are not easily available until next september. I’m not sure that the new Sprinter features justify revisiting our choice...what are your thoughts?
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
@Denise Racine - if you start over then the wait time will be next fall i would imagine. if you can wait through another season then the safety upgrades on the 2020 sprinter are fantastic but having said that the safety features on the 2018 MY are still top of the class. a year is a long time to wait!

Since you have first-hand experience with Pleasureway, it might be helpful to your viewers/readers to know about our experience with a then-new top-of-the-line Airstream Interstate 24' RV that we bought in 2016. After six months of grief, aggravation and heartache with what is in our opinion the worst designed, poorly made badly dealer/manufacturer supported network, we thankfully traded it on a 2016 Leisure Travel Van Unity Twin Bed that gave us nothing but joy. The Mercedes platform, to be fair, on both the Interstate and the LTV is excellent and largely problem-free and reliable. Our issues were entirely with the coach. As we traveled extensively, we heard great satisfaction and praise from satisfied Pleasureway owners, while many Interstate owners, like us, were disillusioned with the brand. It would take many paragraphs to list what we felt were Interstate design flaws and manufacturing defects on the coach we owned. For example, It had electric motors and controls that were never needed and created complexities and failures. Why have electric motors on all the sun and night shades? Keeping it in synch proved impossible for us, and individual shades failed on a regular basis. It had a rotary drum to electrically reel in the macerator hose that turned too fast and would jam the hose and blow the fuses. (We had to explain to the Airstream dealer that it was a blown fuse that stopped the macerator). The electric lounge transformed into the bed using the pull out side seats. These seats had metal brackets that when extended to make the bed, hit us near our knees making it painfully uncomfortable to sleep. Yes, this was a 2016 Interstate coach. Perhaps the 2020's are better conceived and built.

Just started researching Class B's, and found your reviews. Excellent information, love your research and your fair reviews. I love the Pleasureway, have similar usage ideas to you, and know I want the 19 ft Sprinter chassis. However, I have to have the 4wd option (Colorado mountains in the wintertime). Would your recommendation be the Airstream based on that need? Any other manufacturers with the 4wd option? Roadtrek is out (too much uncertainty) and Winnebago is too utilitarian. Have you seen any custom conversion companies you would recommend over the Airstream? Most customs that I have seen seem more utilitarian, camper first designs.

I think you did a marvelous job picking your interior. I don't see that Pleasureway offers the same color high-gloss, radius that you picked (as I'm picking options on their site) - your (I believe) cherry is nicer, I think. The radius design looks sharp - but it's an extra $3250! I also really like the almond upholstery that yours has. All of that together looks really nice - quite luxurious-looking. I've only been able to find gray upholstery with mocha cabinetry in used ones in my area - it's just all too dark and doesn't look as nice IMHO. For the price, I want it to look super sharp. I wish they offered these vans in the cherry red that I've seen Winnebago offering, too - silver and white are boring.

Have you done a comparison of the gas version of the Pleasureway Ascent vs the Panoramic that you currently own. I'm curious to know, for your own personal use, which one you prefer and why. Also, how would you advise someone to purchase the Panoramic? I would think used or direct purchase might be the answer. What would you expect the price to be?
@Ultramobility

Layout-wise I definitely prefer the Panoramic. With the new 2022 Ram chassis it is on par with the Sprinter in terms of safety features. Lacking a bit in luxury features like electric seat controls, heated seats and power side door but in terms of drive ability I now prefer the Promaster. The electric steering is much nicer and the 9 speed transmission is amongst the best transmissions I’ve driven. Just call Panoramic and place an order. They will take care of you. Price will be around $150k for a fully loaded on like mine.

Scientists have a difficult time with it. Anyway, thanks for your very good review of the Ascent while also mentioning the Interstate Nineteen’s similarities. I was looking at the Interstate for a while there, but the lack of passenger belts, no lithium batteries, and (if I'm not mistaken) the plastic toilet, just let me down and were deal breakers. I've shied away from Mercedes Sprinters though, so although I do, as always, love the reviews, my interests are now leaning toward Ram Promaster Lexor FL or the Midwest Promaster Legend. Any comparisons coming up on those?

As I've been searching used RVs, I've found airstreams are much, much cheaper than pleasure way and there are 3-4 times more used airstreams. Why are they so much cheaper considering they are almost equal in quality?

What is it with the most expensive RVs out there offering 2-point lap belts to passengers (which means you don't carry your most precious guests) and lead-acid batteries that Henry Ford used 100 years ago I still think the RV industry is where the US car industry was when an unknown Japanese compnay named Toyota decided to take over the US car industry by offering what consumers wanted and not what MBAs wanted in the boardroom

agree but from my talks with heads of these companies the product is not a must-have product like a car. As a secondary or tertiary big ticket item there's just not a lot of r&d dollars that are justified since volume levels are so low. that's my understanding of the situation at least.

A lead acid battery that Ford used a hundred years ago seriously that's like say a model A and a Ford Focus are basically the same and no major improvements have been made . For the Vast majority of Mercedes Rv owners lead acid batteries are more than adequate.

@@jimbotheassclown I just spent a minute trying to find a lead-acid battery in our home just Lithium and Alkaline in our home. Rechargeable items are all Lithium. I have to look into our Honda HR-V to find a lead battery. Thank you for the review Neil. You are clearly bias for the Pleasure Way. So, I started watching another youtuber with one and started seeing all the problems they are having. Made me very concerned. There seems to be unsolvable problems with the PW fridge not staying cold. Heard it from many sources. I am wondering why the warrenty won't just replace it. Problems with the PW shades that are not automatic (like the Interstate). they don't seem to work going up and down. Plus they needed to add a new suspension package. I think I would prefer the 4x4. Since my husband is 6'2", we really like the fact that the toilet is at an angle. It feels a lot roomier. Plus the bed is longer for him. I also like all the extra usb ports and drink holders Airstream offer. I am not knowledgeable about the batteries. Sounds like the lithium might be better. Need to learn more about that. But after I did an item by item comparison, once you add the door shades, beautiful cabinets, solar and safety features with side camera, the Pleasure Way really is a lot higher price than the Airstream. That surprised me. I love your channel and have learned a lot from you. Due to our lifestyle and where we want to go, we are seriously wanting the 4x4. Any others than the Airstream with the 4x4?. looks at Revel, it was not our style. Still doing my homework. Thank you for all your help.

I have looked at the Airstreams at shows numerous times. While I like the interior style, they just are too small. It appears that Airstream builds them for under 6 footers. The head room is always too short and the bathrooms are SO tiny. Especially for the price. At 6'5" I will keep looking.

I really like the Ascent. But Pleasure-Way has ticked me off for a few reasons: One, in spite of their "stall" production, they won't make ANY deviations from their product specifications. For example, I asked about why the "copper" interior (like yours) is no longer available, and was told it was just a production change. When I wrote back offering to pay extra for it, I was basically blown off by their representative named Grant. Pleasure-Way offers two basic pale-looking interior colors, and only white or silver exteriors. They also went to the flimsy magnetic screens instead of the neat sliding ones, and the retro MCD roller shades which I had in my bedroom in 1955. I just expect more choices at this price point. Pleasure-Way is unwilling to accommodate the customer, and in spite of their great warranty, and the poor Coachmen one, I'm going with the Galleria 24A. Just more for my money, and great construction.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
@Thomas Darby - thanks for sharing your experience with others. The Galleria 24A is a nice coach. Be aware of the 1 year warranty and shake down as much as possible that first year. With regards to the copper interior - i love it too and don't understand why they don't make it. I don't like the new interior colors as much. the new Corian "concrete" colors are not good in my book. However, I like the MCD shades and screens ALOT. I've had non-MCD shades and the MCD shades just work great and are simple. the sliding screens for me just collect grit and start to jam up. bad design choice for an RV in my opinion.

Thank you for the quick response. I drove diesels for many years and loved them but that was before and up to 2010. I now have seen there are many differences than then and with some of what I have read it was making me a little worried about going with that and not opting for a gas powered Lexor. But this will help me again reconsider my first thoughts on the MB series. They are by far the best looking of the two series.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 5 лет назад
@Randy McGehee - here's my 2 cents. Fleet operators like Amazon would not be buying up all the stock of the diesel Sprinter right now if there were any hints of problems with that engine. they just have too many in their fleet and it would cost them. so i use all the fleet operators that continue to purchase the sprinter as my gauge. it's a reliable, capable and robust platform in my book.
@marjoriehall9984
@marjoriehall9984 5 лет назад
@@Ultramobility I have wondered about the diesel/DEF issue many times--I love the short sprinter but I'm always held back because of the cost and potential issues. I have been on a FB group for the Revel and it seems there are some issues just related to the 4x4 (though all the owners love that capability). I think there are always tradeoffs but the new sprinter design that now comes standard with the 7-speed has really caught my interest again.
