The first time I went to Gates was like 2002 the one by Blue Ridge Mall I will never forget. They need to open one in Nashville Tennessee I've said that since that day in 2002, and when my daughter goes back home to KC MO she already knows to bring her dad some Gates BBQ back to Tennessee. Hungry 🍽️ Amen 🙏🏿
I am from Kansas City and have eaten at all these places. If you are there just for the food then Joe’s Kansas City brisket burnt ends can not be beat. Fora fancier sit down experience then Jack Stack is great. They have all kinds of dishes. The best time to go to Joe’s is about 3 pm, otherwise you will have to stand in line for a while.
Here is a tip, pre order joes, then walk to the left and pick up your order. Then sit and eat, no line no wait. My Tuesday lunch routine fir years when I lived there.
Another place to find great KC BBQ is the Chief's parking lot Sunday mornings before their games. Our home town everyday people cook some wonderful BBQ as well as the shops.
I drive from Vail, Colorado to the Indy 500 every May. I time when I leave, both directions, so I hit Kansas City for lunch or dinner. Joe's used to be my favorite, although I love the burnt ends at Slap's better now. I'll have to try Gates sometime.
I ate at Gates over 40 years ago. Man it's always good. Jack Stack was good but not what I call smokey flavor. Have yet to try Joe's. I ate at that exact Smokehouse location 4 years ago and it was HORRIBLE. Warm ketchup sauce with no zip slathered on everything. Yuk. No smoke flavor in anything and the Beans were blah. Must have improved but I ain't going back to find out. We asked for the Manager and got a rude snub. Recently ate at Char Bar on the West side off 435 & 45. Excellent. Q39 is another worth the wait.
To my demise KC Masterpiece was closed. It was my go to bbq, whenever I was in Overland Park, KS. You can still buy their BBQ sauce at the grocery stores.
@@jerryjerrylahngenhairy4724 #1 Jack Stack, a little pricey but worth it. They have several restaurant's but the best one is in Martin City (South KC). #2 Smokehouse in Independence, MO excellent Q & #3 Burnt Ends BBQ in Overland Park, KS. Honorable Mention: I admit I haven't eaten there yet but I've heard a lot of good things about Harps BBQ in Raytown, MO
I would not put jack stack in the top 3. The freight house is a nice experience but do they even have a smoker on the property? Bryants should have been your first stop
I have delivered to the Freight House Jack Stack many times in the morning as a route man when I worked for Sara Lee. They have a massive brick smoker that they would be loading up with wood and meats in the morning while I was there.
An argument can be made for Gates and Joes but not Jack's Stack. It should be noted that the hosts favorite thing at Jack's Stack was "carrot cake". Jack's Stack is highly overrated.
And yet another Kansas City BBQ video that just gets it wrong. I'm 64 born and raised in Kansas City. So here's the deal. In today's world of millennial thinking. Places like Joes and Q39 thrive but have no where near the "essence" of what an actual BBQ Joint entails. These are more upscale restaurants that cater more towards comfort than BBQ. People will argue saying "Joes is upscale"?? Walk into Bryant's or LC's and you will immediately see what I'm talking about. Henry Perry (father of Kansas City BBQ circa 1908) is rolling over in his grave. Best in Kansas City is the OG, Arthur Bryant's. New Yorker magazine once called it the best in the world. Then there are the next best places like LC's and Danny Edwards. Oh, and I would literally rather have a McRib sandwich from McDonalds than to step foot in any Gates restaurant.
It's interesting that you never see Zarda's on W. 87th St. mentioned in these RU-vid videos...I've eaten there many times in the last 40 years and am never disappointed.
terrible top 3. gates and jackstack or old news. There are so many better places bbq joints in the kc metro than those two. Its like this guy has only gone to a handful of places in his years here. q39, harp, slaps, LC's, rosedales just to name a few that are far better than gates. gates has rested on their laurels too much for 25 years now.
