Nikon is finally getting the recognition it deserves! I’m
Super proud to say that we stood with Nikon before they were the cool kids in town. The Nikon Z8 & Nikon Z9 are the two best hybrid cameras on the market. And thankfully for us, Nikon has created some amazing NIKKOR glass designed with video in mind for the these amazing cameras. When it comes to my top 3 lenses for video on the Nikon Z8 and Z9, it’s always going to be the holy trinity: The Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm F1.8 S, The Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm F1.8S, and the Nikon NIKKOR Z 85mm F1.2S lenses. In this video, we’re going to talk about everything that makes these NIKKOR Z S line lenses special, and their specific use cases with respect to cinematography.

Fam, I am so happy that our little community stood with Nikon before it was cool :). Today we are talking about my favorite lenses for the Nikon Z line. Although this is geared for the Z8 / Z9 this really stand for any Z mount camera. :). As always, I should say, if you can for for 1.2 across the line the do it, but I wanted to make sure this list was as accessible across the board, but going hard where we could! Keep climbing friends :)

Ngl…switched from Sony to the Z8 and im amazed at the colours in Photo and Video…it requires so little work…but most importantly: the 1.8 Lenses are AMAZING, their colour clarity and Bokeh rendering is ART! In truth i want Nikon to do these 1.8 S Line Lenses in 1.4 and i would be in heaven…

Hello, I’ve used Nikon since I was let down badly by Canon, in 1988. I use the Z9 and Z8. Only two bodies these days. I used to by a camera with each lens at one time. They were always top line models. I have never been rich with money, only equipment. I agree totally with your comment about softness with fast lenses in the past wide open, exceptions, however were the 300mm, 400mm f2.8 fx and the 200 f2. I still own these, and they are super sharp fully open. On the Z mount they perform even better!! I’ve only just subscribed to your channel, I am picky. Love it, honest genuine info, thank you……… TonyH

Just a small note, that you or others might find interesting: the Nikkor Z85/1.2 is THE heaviest of all lenses regardless of brand, then again it does NOT weigh 1.730g (your video @ 3'09s) but 1.160grams. ;-)

Great video Sidney, when I started to do video on Z cameras, the only prime from your list I had was the 50 1.8 however, I also used the Z MC 105 2.8 and while it was a sharp lens, it's focusing capabilities is slower. My other lens was the 24-70 2.8 S, which got a lot of use. I'm hoping Nikon will make 1.4 versions of the 35, 50 and 85, with the control ring and a separate manual focus ring. I sold off my lens when I went over to Sony and now that I am back with the Z8 and the 24-120 f4, I want to get a couple of wide aperture primes for my talking head videos. I love that Nikon is putting out more lens and I want to see some that are dedicated for video, but not too pricey. I like the Plena and may get one, as it is such an awesome lens! A 1.4 series would 100% bridge that gap. I do like that the 1.8s are very nicely priced, especially for the performance.

@@sidneybakergreen Agreed, can’t beat that those lens are also S line lens, with great optical design. I may have to look at a 35 1.8 now. As I’m traveling around South East Asia and Mongolia, weight is a factor so I went with zooms, the 24-120 f4 S lens is such a gem and it’s on the camera most of the time and it covers all those ranges, while producing fantastic results. I do like some great primes though.

@@waynerm002 The weight of those lenses really sells me. I only love the weight of the 85 at 1.2 is iconic. Photography wise, yes, I'd use the 1.2s across the line. But the lightness of the the 35, 50, and 85 1.8 is amazing. Even if you have all three is so light.

@@sidneybakergreen I’m still in a photography mindset when it comes to lens selection, I have my trinity setup but, now I’m seeking some video primes. However, as I have to travel with my gear, I have to hold off on adding additional gear. Recently I picked up the Zeiss Otus 1.4/55 and Batis 2/25 as I was taking a break from YT and was doing more photography. I recorded some clips with the Otus 55, while doing focus pull with it, gave me some appreciation for understanding the filming process and seeing how different that can be than shooting a video with the camera handling it all. I have a long ways to go there but I’m enjoying the learning process. Your channel has helped me in getting a better handle on grading NLog footage, it’s how I discovered your channel. If it isn’t too much to ask, if you don’t mind sharing some advice, I posted some NLog footage in my video on the Otus 1.4/55, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lgBNM-QadCU.html please let me know how the grading looks and share any suggestions you have on improving. I actually used one of my power grades and went to more of the desaturated side except for the night stuff. FilmConvert did pass through at the end, but the look was build in resolve before passing it through the film emulation. The pack I have is available on the store :)

HI Sidney, I enjoyed that. I am not a cinematographer, but like all of us, I d like to be. How would you change lenses on the camera and then get the actor to play the scene again? Or would you have another person with the other lens

In my experience, we generally run the scene a couple of times. The 1AC would perform the lens change between shots if we wanted to go wider or tighter. If you have a budget for multi cam, then that's also an option. It's whatever works best for you. I like the single camera setup. I might also want a little bit of different expression as we go in tighter, and that allows us to stitch the best of the best takes together in post.

You lens overview link is broken. :( I moved over to Sony when digital video started coming out from Nikon. I miss Nikon color science and the feel of outdoor photography. I am seriously considering going back but am so bummed about flip screens. Anyway, I am working out a way to get back into the platform.

Agree about the superiority of prime lenses in general, but when you are using a mattebox and ND system and running and gunning, it's kind of a pain to have to switch the primes and the mattebox etc. These do look fantastic tho.

I've always shot primes, so I've gotten pretty used to it at this point. The 50 and 35 have the same filter size, so I didn't find I was too slowed, but to each their own

I love the features and the potential of this camera but don't you think that short flange distance makes any bokeh rendering on z mount native lenses useless? I can even see it in the talking head footage, feels "camcorder-ish" due to lack of perceivable depth, and for photos bokeh is or is not so important but for video it is..your thoughts on that?

The 35 and 50 I talked about are good choice price wise. If you need an 85 but don't want to break the bank go with the 1.8 :)

You can always go for the 1.2, depending on the style and look. I find most times I'm shooting at 1.8-2.8. Also pricing a was factor with this list.

@@sidneybakergreen all my content this year so far and half of last year has been on the Z9 and Z30. Just switched to davinci resolve also to record N-RAW.
