Thank you for these videos. My husband passed, unexpectedly, before he could even start a new project for our sons. The wood arrived the day after he passed and I know what he was planning in a general sense. I'm going to start and finish the project but I have a huge learning curve to overcome. These videos are a really big help!
Hey there. I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Picking up a tool and continuing what your husband was going to do could be no higher honor. I am happy the videos will be here as a reference for you. I wish you the very best of luck. -Matt
I draw with charcoals and you're 100% right about confidence. In case it's still hard for people to have confidence in themselves, just use this little mind trick. Pick a project that looks extremely difficult that you'd be super proud of if you were able to do it and get to it. It's a win/win as long as you attempt a very difficult piece. If you don't do a perfect job, everyone will still be super impressed because they can see just how difficult it is and how well you still did. No one expected you to be able to do as good as you did. On the other hand, if you do a great job, you still win but then you'll see just what you're capable of and that project will become a keepsake you'll never part with.
Just getting started myself after past year I just want to be able to create from home . Mostly carved images , lettering, and small toys maybe rings. Im starting with Tacklife and small whittling kick. Unfortunately Tacklife has some form of power issue when holding up. An I was warned about dust as I'm working in small room (only room left 😅). I'm absolute beginner never really bought tools in my life unless you count paint and big hammer. So I've mostly been try to work on my rough sketches and get small whittling cuts down. Long winded way saying thank you be interested in future content. Good luck all beginners 🙏☮️
I really liked your last tip to “believe in yourself.” I just finished my first wood carving project - a Christmas present for my wife - and I was really skeptical if I would be able to do what I wanted to do, let alone finish it in time for Christmas. So I got my siblings in on the process and would send them pictures of my progress so they could help me stay motivated. I’m proud to say that I did finish it and I think it looks pretty good for my first project. I can’t wait to do more!
If you think you can't, you are probably right. Don't defeat yourself. And be humble. Very good points and tips you are sharing. Thank you for sharing.
So glad I found your channel! I'm planning a project for a wedding gift to my soon-to-be husband. He's great with tools, especially the dremel. I, however, have no experience. So I thought this project would surprise and impress him. Luckily a family friend of ours is gonna help and supervise me. I really needed to hear the #1 mistake. I am easy to fall into those self-doubting moments. Thank you so much for your time, effort, and encouragement.
Ohhhh! Thank you!!! #1 Believe in Yourself!! I was talking to the owner of a gallery where I have sold many of my art pieces. He said to me: Start wood carving on your work. I said, "I don't know how." He said, "Learn how and start doing it. Why haven't you?" I said, "I'm afraid I'll cut my fingers (joking)." He said, "Get gloves. Start now." You inspired me! Thank you again!
Believing in your abilities is as powerful as knowing your limits. Having faith in yourself is how you overcome those limits. We are capable of so much more than we often realize. Good stuff, Matt!
Thank you for your motivational comments and reassurances. I feel those negative feelings about everything I do but am able push through them in most intances. You have given me a positive boost to pick up my dremmel, my drawing pad, sit down at my sewing machine and serger, and do what I'm told I am good at. Self-belief...so hard to acquire...foster...encourage...maintain, so once again thank you.
All of your videos are extremely inspiring and informative! They've taught me so much even before I engaged in my 1st project! .. Half way through now, I am having tremendous success , and can't believe what I'm seeing and doing thanks to you and your videos!!! I can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge and skills with us !.. Unfortunately I am completely obsessed and addicted now, also thanks to you and your videos!!!! lol Anthony
You are my current instructor as this is new territory for me. I appreciate your precise and clear instruction! I know there is lot of "bros" watching your videos but some ladies out here too.
Your #1 tip is so very true! I was tasked with building a large draw leaf dining table for my in-laws. I've never even heard of that style before and one thing I learned from that is take the project in steps and believe in your skills to build your confidence so you can build upon your existing skill set. I want to get started in carving and have been watching your videos to get an idea of what to expect and they have been very helpful and informative, this one especially.
Lotting... I was born in Tennessee, lived in North Carolina, Georgia, and South Carolina, and now Virginia. I have never heard “lotting” before. I actually thought you were talking about some carving technique when you said that. 😂 I was stumped until it dawned on me you were talking about the lights! I know we have our own distinct vocabulary here in the south but that was a new one! I love it truly! I’m new to woodworking in general but just got a dremel 4300. I’m primarily interested in doing decorative inlays and possibly some minor furniture carving (small table legs, corbels , etc) and I’m unsure of what all I can do with the rotary alone. I like your videos and definitely look forward to seeing what else you have to share! I hope you take what I said to be as light hearted as I meant it!
Hahaha! You’re fine, I get it all the time lol. It’s my thick Arkansas accent! So glad you found the video helpful! With what you are wanting to do I’d say a good rotary tool should serve you well! I’ll be here if you need any help! Just make sure you have good “lotting”! Haha
Love your videos. I am a real beginner at high speed carving and have learned a lot from your videos. Since finding your channel I've been binge watching. Cant. wait for warm weather to get back out to the garage and try out what Ive learned. Thank you for the great videos
I have always wanted to try wood carving, but because of you im definitely gonna do it! Your videos are really good! To the point, well explained and you seem like a sweet guy! And i love your accent!
I've watched several of your videos, and I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge with the rest of us.This video, however, I think is the best. Why? Because you shared what you've learned, but most importantly, the last tip..."Believe in yourself" Those of us struggling to learn carving in general. And believing that we can do it. At 66, I strive everyday to learn everything about wood working, but more recently learning how to carve. Than you again for your videos.
Hey Mr. O’Connor! I really appreciate this comment sir! Thank you for your support on my channel and I’m very happy to hear you are learning something!
You, kind person, are delightful. I really appreciate that your number one tip is: Believe in yourself. I appreciate the way you informed us you were going to be vulnerable with us for a moment. I apologize if that last sentence is strange, but the lack of vulnerability that is displayed these days means more and more younger people and young adults do not really know what it means to be vulnerable or what that looks like. It takes much courage and strength to grant others' access to our hopes, dreams, insecurities, weaknesses and strengths. Thank you for your thoughtfulness! Keep making these amazing tutorials, and I'll be confident enough to transition from wood burning to carving in no time :)
Hey man, Thank you so much. I started wood burning recently, and my latest project got me thinking about getting into wood carving as well. Your videos are a God send and I really appreciate it. Your newest subscriber Dominique South Africa
Thank you for this. I recently started using a dremel. I've been practicing by making coasters and am trying get more used to it as well more confident with my projects.
😢 Believe in yourself self thank you Matt I really needed too hear that 😊 this is the second video I seen on your channel I’m subscribed I love it already truly thank you sir
I'm constantly messing with my lighting. Adding, removing, repositioning multiple lamps. Drives me nuts. Couldn't that cloth over the clamp lamp cause a fire? Also, unrelated, but I started using freezer paper with an inkjet printer to place stencils directly on the wood. Works like a friggin charm. Thanks for another great vid!
Just make sure you aren’t using halogen bulbs. CFL’s and LED’s doesn’t get that hot. I heard of that method with the freeze paper! I am going to have to try it bro!
I so believe in your number one of the Five Mistakes That Wood Carvers make as on a day if I am feeling not so confident that is when I will not produce a good carving however when I am feeling the confidence it seems I can just about carve anything.
Just about my first road until it's a hyper tough .. 20 bucks from Walmart just to try and see if I like it and I do . I stumbled across your video with the heart and like most starting out see other stuff and be like man I can't do that great motivation bro
I'm just starting out by making a gift for my little brother and im so worried to mess up when I start. This helped so much. You probably just saved me from ruining my work so thank you
Yes i liked #1 best. For me it is not a "I think I can't" but more a " I don't know how"! So since i am semi retired and want to work with wood on all sorts of projects...i just don't know how, so videos made by Cornelius teach me the HOW! Back in the mid '70s girls were not allowed to take wood shop classes. Now that I am semi retired, i am teaching myself how to use wood crafting tools. Today my project to use a torch to make a rustic wooden USA flag. The only tool i am actually fearful of is the a Table Saw, the potential of kick back and i have seen first hand seasoned professionals run their hand/fingers over the table blade...is serious business.
Fantastic video thank you so much. Love your videos you have really helped me start out. Love carving now. I was told a tip once that "every project goes through an ugly stage". I used to give up at that point and feel a failure but that really helped me. Hope it helps someone else. Happy carving you crazy awesome people 🤪💝🌈
i just got into power woodcarving and ive been checking out aloot of videos online, but you are one that i really appreciate and your tips and projects are seriously useful to me and am sure many others as well please keep it up we need it
Great tips! Just finished my first wood carving sign. That video will be out christmas night. How do you get more clean carves on soft wood? Was using new bur bits but still frayed the fibers but sanding got rid of it.
@@donnamartin2568 3rd Donna here.😂 ...and a Donna J as well! That's funny. I just got my first Dremel today but I've dabbled in other art mediums off and on. I live in the sticks so I thought, with all this material lying around, I should do something creative with it. Good luck and have fun, Donnas. 👍☺
Thank you brotherman that last thing you said really helped me out. I feel terrible before I even start it and that bad vibe last throughout the project. One day I'll be good as you! Thanks again man 👍🏻 your videos help the most out of all of em
yes his number one mistake about not believing in yourself, is completely true, i would think about the project I'm currently on and find myself overwhelmed even though i hadn't even created my stencil design, but when i finally reached the point i started carving, i quickly realized it was way easier than i ever considered, even though it still taunts me every-so- bit i toughen up and press forward
#1 is the only one I actually got right. I started going too deep with my very first project and I just bought the tool in stead of lear ng what they are for and how to use it. Today I learned alot more. My plan wasnt for wood it was supposed to been for metal to make my husband dog tags. I actually fell in love with wood carving by accident.
Confidence! You hit the nail on the head. I often have a hard time just starting because I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. I'd love to take some classes, but there's nothing available where I live.
So my girl bought me a rotary a few months ago just cause she thought it could also be used as a drill so maybe we would need it. At the time i didnt think much cause i didnt know how to use it but the other day i decided to look into it and your videos have helped alot..still have almost no clue what im doing as far as which bits to use but i can already see its gonna be so fun to create andget better. Anyway, thanks
Believe in yourself. If you cant then believe in a version of yourself that believes in yourself if you cant, then believe in me that believes in you. You are worth while and deserve to be happy.
When cutting tools are sharp, the edges look like brushed aluminium or steel. So a fast way to check, if the tools are getting number, is the fact that cutting tools are working on or in materials that make the surface of the tools smooth. And that means that the tools shine more than after a correct sharpening. Here in Europe we don't allow the cutting tools to lose more than 1/10 of a millimetre before we have to deal with sharpening the tools again. So I always have a pocket light on me, because the chances of me coming to a saw or a mill, with a logbook with no entry, from the user before me, is always a 100% in my opinion. That way you can make sure that the safety is the highest priority under any circumstances.
God Bless you sir...Jesus Loves You! Thanks for your tips and letting your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father God who is in Heaven. Keep up the Amazing Work you are a Blessing indeed! Thxz for keeping it simple and real..!
