Few days ago I stumbled on a twitter profile that gets faceless gay porn clips and captions the videos as though the men on those clips were male k-pop artists having sex with each other so yeah... These fandoms are not waters you just safely dip even as much of a toe into.
@brandon roberts Honestly I appreciate someone who likes a specific genre of music without trying to crucify someone who disagrees with them. Especially someone from a fandom with a reputation like the kpop fandom. I mean no offense but people are batshit over guys they don't understand.
As someone who's transitioned into a casual fan of kpop and bts and has been an active part of the fandom, yes it is really crazy and scary and wholeheartedly understand why Todd never wanted to touch it with a 10 foot poll. Which is really sad because bts especially has a lot of really good music if you're willing to look into their older music and non title tracks. The stupid fucking crazy fans ruin the experience for everyone and give anyone who's not into kpop a bad taste in their mouth and I hate it and it's a reason I decided to distance myself from the fandoms....
@@guyman9655 this is a sin kpop fans are soooo guilty of.... kpop isnt for everyone and people are allowed to have that opinion. I've seen people get dog piled for saying they dont like kpop in the most non offensive manner possible...

@@NarutoStorm3Rocks It easily is. I can't think of anything that comes close to its originality and brilliant execution. Watched it already three times in cinema and writing about it makes me watch it again.
You see, this is where being an otaku/weeb comes in handy: It doesn't seem as weird anymore. I've watched a lot of both sub AND dub and at this point I'm really centrist about it; as long as the translation/presentation of the material is _good_ I don't care. So, basically subs don't bother me, as long as they're easy to read/don't go by too fast.
So you're the Todd guy Dark room filming odd guy Always facing off side Dodging all my bots guy I'm that bad type Watch you with no ads type Claiming you so fast, I'd Take you down with mad strikes I'm the bad guy Duh
That split second when you mentioned "Yummy Yum" by Justin Beiber made me want a full Todd review of it... but then I realized I'd have to listen to it again, so I immediately changed my mind.
Does anyone else feel like he just jacked the beat from Feels Like Summer by Childish Gambino or is it just me? I was working a couple weeks ago when Yummy came on and I thought it was some demonic remix of Feels Like Summer.
@@bmslhs I just relistened to it to make sure I got the right song, thanks by the way lol. But, I still stand by my statement. Any time but especially if you're a decent distance from the radio the backing beat does sound a lot like Feels Like Summer----just worse in EVERY CONCEIVABLE WAY.
The thing about billie is that unlike previous generations I really dont think she takes her own edginess seriously. Gen z as a whole has the same everything sucks perspective but are more likely to joke and meme about it.
Yep, we've basically grown up knowing the world is fucked up and we're going to have to try and fix this hot mess. So we just don't care, the world being a mess is *normal* .
@@Labinzel I remember when Chris Cornell died, I dug up a really old article that followed him and Soundgarden on a European tour in '95, during which the band and their crew would find out Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Naturally, there was a whole dark cloud over the rest of the shows they did, but they talked about the current generation of kids and how hopeless they all felt, and how Kurt spoke to them. The world was fucked and there was nothing they could do about it. Maybe it's thanks to the internet and being able to reach out to whatever group of outcasts we can find, but I think this generation has a very different perspective. "Everything's fucked, it's always been fucked, but that's okay, because we're still here." It's laughing instead of crying.
@@darkhero352 she might be the most authentic artist I can think of right now. She really, _really_ speaks to me. Just has that instant access to my tearducts.
@@duke86fan Even if she made a song with credibility, she's already expended her credibility on things like Roar. I don't see it happening. The best she can hope for, I think, is to be future 2010s Madonna when covers "I Kissed a Girl" and then they make out on stage. Either that, or maybe Snoop Dogg will do her a solid at some point in the future and get her involved with some project he's involved in, because Snoop Dogg somehow has become a cultural institution and arguably owes her a favor or two.
What’s INFURIATING about Billie Eilish is how hard people try to make others feel self conscious for liking her. She’s been stereotyped as music for wannabe edgy teenage girls who think they’re tough but aren’t, so if any girl likes her they’re automatically grouped in as another “not like other girls,” to the point that I don’t feel comfortable mentioning her as a favorite because I might get unfairly labeled. Why can’t people just let others enjoy things without find a way to look down on them??? Everyone is obsessed with being superior to young girls and I’m sick of it
People just like making fun of anything that's popular with girls, especially teen and tween girls For some reason there's a consensus that teen and tween girls are the worst, so anything a lot of them like must also be the worst it's fucking stupid
As a 26-year-old man with no taste in music, who found out Billie Eilish was pure talent incarnate and will happily confess my enjoyment of it to anyone who asks, Fuck everyone else’s opinion. Trust me, like what you like and enjoy the hate it brings (if any). Life is too short to care about what other people think. including me, so ignore this... or don’t. I don’t care. (and that’s my point)
It's the same with MCR or basically any music that isn't pop or rap. When i was in school i was horrified of people finding out that i liked MCR or P!ATD because i knew people were going to think that of me. My own friend did it to me when she found out.
I started laughing out loud when the first notes of Boy With Luv came on. It's the same journey I went through with BTS: aggressively ignored them, heard them once by accident, and dragged my feet into loving their music.
@@sarahline9200 lol. I wouldn't know though, because I've steered well clear of the fandom and I don't know any hardcore fans personally. I can't even remember all their names (am I about to get mobbed for that statement?). But I am obsessed with many of their songs.
@@MadWatcher if the song you listened to is Boy With Luv, could I respectfully suggest you listen to another one of their songs? Maybe Fake Love or Blood Sweat and Tears? You might like those better, as I personally thought Haley's presence on the track took away from it. But of course, the band might not be your cup of tea at all and that's fine.
Tod: I really really really didn't want to be in this position Me: He's gonna talk about BTS isn't he *Boy With Luv starts playing* Me: My mind, it amazes me-
I never damn believed I'd feel so damn melancholic and sad for Katy Perry. Like I thought she was artificial and plastic but Plot Twist: So does she and she hates the fact that she wasted all of her now gone time doing it is like a damned Greek Tragedy.
Yeah. Like, even that meme of her saying “They ask you are and you have to say you’re fine-“ the full quote is heartbreaking. She’s talking, from what I can gather, about contemplating suicide...and it got turned into a meme. genius.com/Katy-perry-they-ask-you-how-you-are-and-you-just-have-to-say-youre-fine-annotated
I got the feeling that Lizzo wasn't higher because she got popular in 2019 and people start discovering her older song (Good as hell-2016, Truth hurt-2017), diluting the hit potential of Juice. In this case, the hit wasn`t a song, but Lizzo her self.
Honestly, she got famous on 'Call Me Maybe' which was kind of a shitty novelty song and has not managed to replicate half of its success despite spending all her time since making best damn dance music of the era.
At this point I can only assume it's some kind of witches curse; Carly Rae can make the greatest bops of all time, but she is cursed to never find mainstream success with them
coming from someone who enjoys their fair share of k-pop, seeing todd being ungodly afraid of k-pop stans is both hilarious and disturbingly understandable
and if she plays it right, it could totally be a hit. or maybe that's just wishful thinking, but give it a few years and a greyscale version of her old image could capture people, still.
She really comes off as someone who would be much happier quitting the industry and living a semi-normal life for a few years. I mean, she's rich enough. Worked for Jim Carey.
@@Sugarman96 she's too famous now, but if she holds off for a few years, it could definitely connect because public image might shift away from the recent flop accusations and moreso remember her for her brand of bubblegum pop that has all but disappeared rn.
@@mimi-xx Nope. If she's too famous now, then losing her fame won't matter. There have been so many pop stars who fell from grace over the course of time, it's not something the public will see as tragic. Being a one-hit wonder is considered much more tragic for an artist, and actually making a song about that experience is clever. With Katy, any future release would just be considered a comeback, where as Mike Posner wasn't established enough for I Took A PIll to be considered a comeback.
Comparing "Intro" to Lukas Graham's "7 Years" and just saying "I like DaBaby's version better" made me spit out my drink. Understatement of the century.
She's the best pop star who hasn't cracked into the top ten since her meme opening hit that cemented her as a one hit wonder for most people. Might be the single best pop singer if you don't care about the top hits or lasting impact.
Poor Carly Rae Jepsen - always a bridesmaid and never a bride. It's sad that she will only ever be remembered in the public eye for "Call Me Maybe" and not all the amazing music she made afterwards. :( Thanks for always giving her a shoutout, Todd.
@@crazypokefan123 sure, people like it, but not that many heard it. It wasn't a hit, didn't play on the radio almost at all. I Really really really really Like You is her last popular song.
We live in this world now... I would say I don't want to live in it either But Dua Lipa is in the top 5, Billie has 2 songs in the top 20 and The Weeknd is back with one of his best songs ever in the top 10...
I like Billie Eilish a lot, but "Bad Guy" feels like her "Smells Like Teen Spirit"/"Creep"/"Shiny Happy People"/[insert overplayed song even the artists themselves hate] already.
For someone who really liked "Bad Guy" (and before that "6 Feet Under," which was all I'd heard because I'm kinda a fan of that weird folksy not-quite-celtic stuff...and that song doesn't seem like the direction she's heading in anymore), any recommendations? I've done a teensy bit of hunting: "Copycat" was pretty good, and that one with "you should see me in a crown" is fun in a "walking down the street pretending I'm a supervillainess" way, but I'm not sure where else to go when there's so much music.
I saw a quote that said "Billie Eilish makes music for girs who think they're psychopaths and capable of murder when in reality they're too scared to ask for more ketchup packets" and I can't find her dangerous after seeing that.
The "duh" in Bad Guy used to be my least favorite part of the song, but now I think it's brilliant. She mournfully concludes that she's the bad guy, and it sounds like she's about to sing about how no one knows what it's like to be the bad guy, to be the sad guy behind blue eyes. And that if you looked closer, you'd see a sad misunderstood soul in need of love. That's what you're supposed to say in a song like this, right? Instead, she says: Duh. I AM the bad guy. Deal with it.
Funny, because Bad Guy was the one single off of that album I was not enthusiastic about. I was actually like a year late to the party on her because Bad Guy was the only song of hers that I had heard up to that point and I was really not a fan of it at all.
“Billie Eilish scared the absolute living shit out of me” - Todd in the shadows 2019 “They say all teenagers scare the living shit outta me” My Chemical Romance 2006. Funnily enough they decided to return this in 2019.
When the honourable mentions part ended I thought: "This is it. My bets are on either Taylor Swift's 'Lover', or 'Bad Guy'". Once he started talking about Brightburn I said "I knew it!" out loud.
I first heard Good as Hell back in 2016 when she performed it on Samantha Bee's show and loved it to pieces. I never would have thought it would be a massive hit three/four years later! I personally love Juice more, but I'm glad people are finally loving Good as Hell.
The Cuz I Love you album is fantastic front to back and I don't think Truth Hurts being her biggest hit does it justice. Juice, Tempo or Water Me should've been the big hit imo.
I never understood Todd's love for Never Really Over until I heard it at my (final) high school orchestra banquet, which I went to after finishing my first year in college, and...I'm not sure what it was, but the whole song clicked for me in that moment.
And like...personally it’s my least favorite BTS song. If an “okay” (in my eyes) BTS song gets in the top 10 of the year, just imagine what he’d think of all of their other title tracks. All of the other songs on his list just pale in comparison (except Billie.)
The smash cut from Todd's cold dread to the bright and colorful "Boy With Luv" video almost made me choke on my water. Amazing. 10/10. Thanks for that laugh.
Billie sounds like teenage edge at its absolute best. Bored, confident, but without the inner self-loathing or immaturity. It hits my nostalgia bone just right, I can vibe with it without feeling miserable and old traumas coming back up.
“Billie Eillish was the first one to really capture that teenagers are f-ing terrifying” yeah, this. I'm kinda glad that song, as much as I love it, didn't come out back when I was a teenager though haha
About never really over "This is the best chorus of 2019." I am really glad you said that, felt like people slept on that song but that song might be Katy's best work.
But “never really over” is just a remake of “love you like that” by Dagny. It really isn’t her work. They made “never really over” together because Katy liked Dagny’s song
@@siljamolstad9118 You know what, I didn't know that, thanks for informing me. I listened I love you like that now, I still think Katy's remix version is better but good to know the original artist
@@siljamolstad9118 I hear Dagny's version before Never Really Over (her song was on some TV show and I decided to check out the music) and personally I don't feel it's half as compelling as Never Really Over. Katy's voice is sort of airy and sort of deep at the same time, and it makes her songs feel really uplifting yet emotional at the same time.
I mean, Todd has a history of being respectful of that kinda stuff; he did fall into the anti-Gamergate crowd when they were stomping around the internet. It's not THAT surprising he'd be respectful enough to get their pronouns correct.
Ohhhh I didn't understand why he said that just assumed Sam Smith was a band named after front runner like Lucas Graham. because I am not familiar with them.
Todd: "Everything she's said and done in the last couple of years makes her seem like a woman racked with regrets." Katy Perry: "Is math related to science?"
"They ask you how you are, you just have to say that you're fine.....but you're not really fine, but you just can't get into it because they would never understand."
@@SaltpeterTaffy The scientific method is based on logic, while mathematicians are really just logicians in search of something that is useless to physicists. Damn physicists are always stealing pure and abstract mathematical concepts and applying them to the real world. Gross.
As a kpop fan and long time watcher of Todd, I just kinda assumed BTS was like he who shall not be named, so that had me pretty shook. But Boy With Luv is definitely one their bests tracks
as someone who used to be a kpop fan but nowadays only keeps up with loona, soyeon, and Nothing Else, i... kinda have no clue of when the fuck bts became the squeaky clean poppy cute boy band. weren't they the rappers with the quasi-hardcore sound? this video is the first time i even listened to boy with luv and i had to do a double take to make sure it was indeed them. i know kpop groups almost always have endlessly flexible images, but for some reason my image of this guys was cemented deeply in Dope/Fire/Not Today
@@Kirbita22 yea theyre branched out into a lof different genres because they arent really as angry as they were in 2014, but if you check out their albums bsides youll see they still have hip hop and rap tracks, specifically with the rapline (also recently more rock tracks too)
@@Kirbita22 I actually really _really_ don't like Boy With Luv, but honestly it's their only song that's... Boy With Luv. They're not afraid of change, I can tell you that (Off of their new album Black Swan, Interlude: Shadow and Dionysus in particular had us all shook, and personally I really like Jamais Vu and Louder than Bombs). They went all out pop on this track. It's good if you like the pop-y sound, but it's not for me. Then again, Boy With Luv has to do with the concept of the album as "BTS's persona"... But I still don't like it. Sorry for the digression, btw.
@@Kirbita22 no just Boy With Love is the most poppy soft song in their entire discography otherwise they explore multiple genres and styles and this one happened to chart
@@pawnhearts8785 I think Ryan P meant most refreshing for pop music. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizzard (full name is way better bro, embrace it) is amazing, but it is not meant to be popular music and that's ok.
This video marks the end of my binge fest with Todd's worst and best countdown of an entire decade. It was like reliving the past 10 years of my life. And for some reason, i wanna bawl my eyes out 😭
I actually love Halsey being featured on Boy with Luv precisely because it's so unnecessary. I can't help but think she just bumped into BTS, and they'd heard Closer, so they asked her to be in it. So she got to fulfill every BTS fangirl's dream: to not just meet them but have a cameo in one of their videos. It's so silly and ridiculous, and that's why it's great.
imo its the most natural western artist feature theyve had so far; she fits the tone of the song well, and suga's interlude on her new album was really cool too. They seem to have a wholesome artist relationship that I appreciate 👌
It baffled me that she didn't even get her own verse. Now I just found out that BTS is featured in one of the songs on Halsey's new album. So I guess it's a quid pro quo. Seems to me that Halsey got the short end of the stick here.
@@SeanStrife Fiona's still critically acclaimed and whatnot, she just takes a lot of time to make her music so she releases albums yeaaaars apart. She's the definition of quality over quantity.
Jokes aside I actually really appreciate you're willingness to at least listen to BTS. I'm a new fan and I really like them. They make legit good music. If you check out more they have subtitles too btw Glad you liked the song, they make a lot of music
I’m a big rap and rock fan, and fell in love with Mic Drop (the original version) because of the absolutely disgusting beat. Then I learned it was about spoons. Some things don’t quite translate.
@@nritsch A lot of there lyrics come from Korean culture and don’t really make a lot of sense if u don’t know the meaning behind it. For people who really want to get into the lyrics there are video by Koreans that explains the meanings to international fans. A lot of fans don’t do thins and just listen to the sound and just try to get a basic understanding about what the songs about. But I unsure you RM, the leader of the group, writes most of the songs and is an (in my opinion) lyrics genius. So you won’t really get bad writing from them. Not that you asked but just so you know.
@@nritsch it's not about spoons, lmao, he mentionned spoons in the first verse because spoons is a korean expression to talk about privilege, for example if you are born with a golden spoon, you are privileged in the society, being born with a dirt spoon, means you had to work you way from the bottom, with no privilege the society puts on you after being born. This is a metaphor to explain bts's situation as them succeeding from the top bottom since they came from a small label in korea, and the kpop industry is VERY VERY hierchical, and it's almost impossible for underdogs to win, usually, but it happened with BTS, like a miracle. So they won while being born with a "dirt spoons" and compared to the privileged kpop groups from big 3 who were born with a "golden spoon".
Y'know, I just have one major fear for the person who sings the number one single (not gonna put it here directly because spoilers lol). They've been selected for the next Bond theme. I am simultaneously scared and interested
I can definitely see it working, listening to the #1 hit right now and it does seem like their style could really fit a james bond intro movie will probably be crap though
Honestly, I think that this person (who is absolutely killer live, even if I saw them 2 years ago it’s still among my favorite concerts) will kill the Bond theme. Like it’s right up their alley.
People are scared because they're expecting a traditional Bond theme. Obviously she couldn't pull that off, having Billie attempt a Skyfall would be stupid. I honestly can't imagine what it'll sound like in the end, but I think going in with no expectations whatsoever is kind of exciting.
That should be interesting. I’ve been listening to this person for a couple of years now, and they are very much able to pull of a range of styles. (This person debut EP showed that) but I agree with commenters that this will be an interesting theme.
Me too, as this is coming from someone who is sick of people saying that the movie the song came from gets more praise than it deserves while not bothering to complain about Sony Animation films that came before it that are FAR less greater, like the The Smurfs duology.
I think in the realm of popular music yes we've seen the last of her, but I think she's either going to continue making music, that's loved by her core fanbase, but receives little to no attention by the mainsteam media, or she completely quits music, and ends up doing something irreparable and going out as a joke. God for her sake I hope it's he former, cause I don't hate Katy. Don't particularly love or enjoy her, but I got no bile towards her.
I mean she already did the American Idol thing which is basically like giving up on having a legitimate and relevant career in music. I think a big problem is that her music has been getting increasingly soulless. It's the Jack Antonoff-ization of music. But it really doesn't work for her. Her songs were interesting because her vocals were weird and could be abrasive and she wasn't afraid of borderline irritating hooks. Lizzo proves that there's still an appetite for people making joyful pop music with personality.
I expect her to go full soulful as she leaves pop behind. I expect her to be making Starbucks music by 2023, then she'll start getting noticed by the more selective elements in music...becoming a critical darling. After that, she'll repeatedly hit the genre charts and develop a sizable following in the vein of Imogen Heap, Phish, Pearl Jam, or The Grateful Dead.
Todd's attitude, respectfulnes towards pronouns and just the whole not taking music too seriously and being so respectful makes me love him and his lists even more
Yeah , I always felt the same way , it is about her career never being really over despite her maybe not getting a huge hit later disguised as a usual relationship song .
i knew todd avoided talking about bts (bc part of the fandom is intense) but im glad that he finally accepted them and liked boy with luv, honestly bts music is so different each era and they explore a lot of genres too, i suggest to check songs like autumn leaves, home, save me, euphoria, cypher part 4 to name a few, also the boys themselves are really charismatic and down to earth, army can be a very intimidating fandom but if you respect the boys and dont mock their looks or nationalities we dont mind, the reason armys can get so aggressive is because we dont only have western fandoms talking sht abt them, but other kpop fandoms also join in the hate train and do the most “to ruin them” (yeah its sick i know) but overall what drew me to be a fan of bts is that they all have different and unique personalities and their albums have music with great messages that also makes you feel good.
"But Billie Eilish I got /immediately/." Same, my dude. Where's that hand shake meme? There ought to be one of Millennials and Gen-Zers shaking over Billie Eilish.
It took a Gen-Zer to introduce me to Billie in 2018 but this Gen-Xer also got her immediately. Looking forward to more music from Billie and Finneas in 2020 and beyond.
Right? I'm a posterboy for the "curmudgeonly sour elder millennial headbanger" archetype and when my teenage niece made me check out Billie I could only react with a "fuck yes more of this!"
I could never get into her :(. Like she isn’t bad, I just don’t get down with her music. Her voice is always so quiet and while I think the instrumentals are nice I can’t ever say none of them stick with me. It’s weird because I think her lyrics are sometimes great and stuff, but I can’t ever really “get” her
As a 90's kid, Eillish is one of the few pop stars I could easily imagine being as equally huge in my hey-day as today. If I heard "Bad Guy" in high school, I'd have been all over it.
Who can resist that oh my my... Its just if radio willing to play their song, boy with luv could be more popular in US. Its already doing so well in asia n winning song of the year in korea.
Todd says "Dancing On My Own" will be the iconic song for movies set in the early 2010s, and in that same way "Bad Guy" will be the cliché needle drop choice for movies set in the late 2010s and possibly even early 2020s
Honestly I am happy pop songs has stopped seeing teens as either innocent or confident(HA!) in 2019 Billie showed how terrifying teens can be, and right Olivia is showing real teen emotions. I haven’t listened to brutal enough to have an opinion, but I am just glad it exist, simply because it captured the emotional hell, being a teenager can be.
I had a dream where Todd made his top 10 best hit songs of 2020. At #6 he put on a song called 'Don't fall into the hole' by this band (one that probably doesn't exist) where the frontman is a guy with a really long beard. It was put on the list because apparantly it's a very sexy song... the reason I'm putting out this comment is because 1. I refuse to believe that anyone is sexy in 2020 and 2. If a song like that does get on the future best list I can say that I called it 😏
Well, there was that bearded country singer on his best of 2022 list, who sang about wanting relief from his drug habits (which is kind of like being in a hole)
I've been unattached from pop music this year and never kept track of all the stuff that was going on, so for about five seconds I made the completely foolish mistake of thinking 'Wait, is Sam Smith the name of a band?'
@@jseeker1867 That would be funny if their gender identity was actually a cover so that they could use a typically plural pronoun and that Sam Smith is actually three kids in a trenchcoat. "I went to the studio. I did a music."
Green Light is much better than that. Also, if there is one song that should be played to represent the 2010s I feel like a track like Alright or Take Care are better tracks that represent the extremely mixed feelings about the decade.
@@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770 I meant Lorde is a massive Robyn fan, so she probably wouldn't argue with you if you said Dancing On My Own was better than Royals.

I saw the trailer for 'Boy with Luv' and I too was intrigued. The intro reminds me of Rather Be by Clan Bandit. It hooks you in and you stay for the ride. Its a top song, even though I too never looked up the lyrics. Kind of nostalgic thoughts pop into the head
