The Top Ten As a kid, mom gave me a Boat Anchor of a book, all the auto companies in the world. All the Soviet cars were in it. I was always a bi fascinated by them. 📻🙂
Fair enough, the styling was copied fro Western cars. But the suspensions and running gear were fairly crude but tough and easy to fix Soviet designs. They were well aware that these cars would be driven on poor roads by low skilled drivers. Much like their weapons, easy to use by poorly trained soldiers, the AK47 gun and T34 tank being prime examples.
In case of the first Moskvitch, it was not a copy. The Soviets stole all the tooling, dies and machines in Germany, reaaembled them in Russian and continues to produce the Opel Kadett, now named Moskvitch.
If the Volga was a true copy of the 1960 falcon, then I feel sorry for the Soviets who had one of these. In Australia the early falcons were a disaster. Front suspension good for less than 10,000 miles in the city, much less in the country. Fixed by Ford Australia using the Fairlane front end. This was the stupidity of Ford America not allowing preproduction testing in Australia. Maybe the USSR heard about the Australian experience.
