Certainly, they have something extra. The "trouble" is that this is a sailing competition, and how you fare in the competition matters.

Team Malizia takes the DIY prize here. Seems to me TOR should consider a points category (with meaningful race points awarded) for creative repairs underway 🤔
@52Tenor
@52Tenor Год назад
Some of the most difficult work on this leg is to sail in a way that do not break the boat. To be able to level speed and caution. I do not think it is a good idea to reward breaking boats.
@C_C_SEA
@C_C_SEA Год назад
Points and perspective acknowledged; however, fleet-wide damages thus far appear to me less to do with crews pushing boats recklessly than with boat design/construction meeting inherent limitations.

A block breaking apart is just very bad luck. Fixing the subsequent damages is skill! Bravo! Good luck and fair winds!

I don't think this would be a good idea. It would incentivize creating predetermined breaking points with a concept for repairs. I think we wouldn't enjoy that development

Good (excellent analogy) model !! When it happened, and watched them perform the repair, I missed the part about the block breaking causing loss of the sail. I had a question why the design of the line path would come up through the mast, and over the composite without a pulley. I assume Malizia was able to repair the block at the top of the mast, too.
@volkerkonig9376
@volkerkonig9376 Год назад
there is a blocking lock at the top. So, as I understood, the halyard is normaly not so overpowered. Nevertheless I think there is some leading protection where the halyard is coming out of the mast. The sail is then tightened by a sort of cunningham at the bow. But when the block at the top broke the sail, especially when in the water, put high pressure on the halyard and this line then rip of the masttop.
@truegret7778
@truegret7778 Год назад
@@volkerkonig9376 Ah, thank you, that makes sense. I am not a sailor but find this race in particular (and the Americas Cup since I live in San Diego (I've even been on the Stars and Stripes vintage Dennis Connor for a team building event)) absolutely stunning in every way. Endurance, emotional fortitude, constant pounding, listening to the winds, whistles, and voices the boat is telling them, and the fact the combined strength of the team is greater than the sum of the individuals (ref: Boris' comments "I'm so happy to not be alone").

It seems like the IMOCAs tend to break down a whole lot more than the VO65s used to. It appears that the race is mostly going to be won by the teams that have the least heavy damages throughout the event, which makes me wonder if it wouldn't be possible and or worthwhile to build all these components a lot stronger, even if it would add some weight and cost a bit of speed.
@LuiyoSA
@LuiyoSA Год назад
was going to ask that. the VO65s are more sturdy?
@ferdypl322
@ferdypl322 Год назад
@Luis Gordillo The predecessors to the VO65s, the VO70s broke down quite a lot, so the VO65s were deliberately overbuillt, making them heavier but more resilient
@Masus04
@Masus04 Год назад
@@ferdypl322 Yes, that's what I've heard as well. I'm wondering if a similar approach to the IMOCAs would have been useful.

I am up at 3AM here in New Hampshire. It is March 4th. ~ A ripped mast??? ~ What is that? ~ A ripped sail ~ Ya know Kenny Reid and that "North" company. "Comanche" in Australia and all. Massive sheets of Carbon Fiber ~I can relate to that. But a MAST???... That mast needs bands~. Wide bands of stainless steel. ~ My Lord, ~ How could that happen? ~ Boris. I have already shared my prayers. Nothing less than the wing of and angel. Maybe many angels. Wings. Keeping fair wind in your sails. Angel wings. Yep. That is what this is about. Angel wings. Nothing less. God speed Boris. To you and your crew. ✨✨💦🙏💦✨✨. ♥

The "strange" thing is that the team picking 2 victories is the only team without big breakdowns to the boat. Coincidence? I do not believe that even for a moment. Holcim PRB is so much better than the other teams, and/or the boat is so much better. The competition is not too exiting. Guyout was the only capable competitor, and when that boat broke, the interest for this leg largely went away.

I can't see how they'll all make it to Itajaí in one piece. This is touted as "The longest stage in the 50-year history of The Ocean Race" and it seems this batch of IMOCAs isn't up to it. What points/weighting contingency do TOR have in place if only a couple or even no teams make it?

Awe inspiring👏👏 What a team spirit - and I‘m sure such spirit is valid for all the 5 teams, one cannot really imagine how much physical and also psychological strain such situations must mean for the teams. The more I‘m expressing my admiration and respect for Team Malizia in particular, and also for Team Guyot whom I‘m cordially wishing a safe return to Cape Town, successful repairs of the vessel and to keep up their spirits. Thank you, Niall, for your great, clear explanations which made me finally understand what went wrong. 👏👏

Seems like any penetration of the mast should be reinforced with an aluminum or titanium grommet, both to protect the edge of the hole from being cut by the cables and lines that run through, and to distribute the load that might come on to the edge of the hole.

Thankyou for the clear explanation what happened to the mast; although I don't think you clearly explained what had happened to the block for us "but why;" unsatisfied individuals. Did it pull threw the mast itself or did a pin shear from over powering the jib? Sounds like this could/should have been prevented with proper maintenance. I figure with the $$$$$$$$$ spent on this great adventure, maintenance replacing blocks, sheets and other high stressed points would be a must at check points.. Maybe the blocks are under sized. Sounds like the shore team/maintenance protocols need to be revised. Maybe all the blocks should be replaced at the next port. Anyways, how about that teamwork and amazing spirits. Team to be on, team malizia
