By the way, a lot of Wolf Brothers were used by Magnus just before the first siege of Fenris to lure the bulk of the legion far from their homeplanet. And they were killed, of course. So probablyvery very few left. And, about the Skyrar's Dark Wolves, it was a band lead by a former Luna Wolf (Skyrar) and a bunch of other Luna and Space Wolves (from the 6th Great company specifically) that went Berserk. So they predate the Wolf Brothers

There are two answers to the canis helix in lore. The first is a dna modification present in fenrisians. The colonists of fenris spliced themselves with canid features to better acclimatise to the planet and is therefor from the dark age of technology and while present is generationally weaker in Fenrisian populations. It could be why the space wolf trials involve exposure and extreme trials to trigger epigenesis in aspirants. Which also goes to explain why Russ personally had to request permission from the emperor to add it to his chapters geneseedS genesequence. (Terran Spacewolves would have lacked much of the canis helixes additional aggression and loyalty to Russ, making them an outgroup). And might explain the cryptic statement "there are no wolves on fenris" as fenrisian wolves are actually degenerated human colonists who over generations became stable. Its an instruction for mutation, The space wolves are technically abhuman in this way. Alternatively the canis helix occured in Russ as a reaction to fenrisian climates. Which the emperor may have borrowed from an existing gene library on terra, and put part of it into russ as one of many adaptive traits (also why vulcan became adaptive to nocturne). He asked "what makes me different?" and the emperor answered "the activation of the canis helix".

There pretty neat, if there are any future stories on the 3rd group I could see a very grim version of the Space Wolves with them. I believe a Mutated one was found by the Space Wolves in a novel. Really if/when Leman Russ comes back having them be helping him in a sense like how the Risen helped The Lion may be a quick way to reintroduce them. I say the best choice for colour scheme would be 30K/HH Space Wolves.

Skyrar's dark wolf's are black shield from the Horus Heresy. That fled to the eye of Terror and became Renegade's.

I may have commented on this in a past video or on a valrak video but I have a theory that as you made out with cawl using dorn's genestock to help stabilize the wolf issues however knowing cawl he probably experimented with other primarch stock as well. My theory for at least the wolfspear is that they may be russ/horus mixed due to tactics, color scheme and mentality they bear a striking resemblance to the luna wolves of old. Whereas if my memory serves one of the other successors has a high psyker rate so they mayhaps be russ/magnus hybrids.

I thought the Fenrisian Wolves were the descendants of humans that manipulated their genes deliberately to live on Fenris without the need of technology? Wasn't that implied by Magnus way back when? I forget which book..

I do not like that now the SW can have sucessors. It was a very relevant part of the SW lore as a chapter, and, as everything since 2018 with the wolves, we do not have yet a proper explanation on why that changed.

I think that the key is in the name itself: Canis "HELIX". A "helix", biologically, is a denomination given to a curled strand of DNA, the classic DNA image that comes in your head is named a "helix". The Canis Helix, therefore, is most likely a specific gene or combination of genes that express more as the Vlka Fenryka ages, leading to the bodily modifications that happen, that under the right conditions, might even lead to a wulfen.

I want a successor chapter of the Wolves that's Siberian Husky themed. They'd look exactly the same from afar, but once you got close they'd flop over and want belly rubs.

The theory of the Wolf Brothers at least partially becoming the Skyrar's Dark Wolves is pretty much debunked now, since the campaign book for The Battle of Beta-Garmon specifies that warband as being a mix of Sons of Horus and Space Wolves (which defected from the 6th Great Company), which honestly is way cooler to me as a concept

Always wanted to make a funny little warband, consisting of feral Wulfen Spacewolves, Death company blood angels and Rampager World Eaters. Call it the Rabies Rabble.

I suddenly wonder: why isn't there an actual werewolf chapter? Or maybe generally therianthrope? Something like a mix of the Blood Angels and the Space Wolves? With them having a similar flaw to the Blood Angels, that they can loose themselves in a Berserker blood rage, but during this state they transform and take on more lupine characteristics. And have to deal with their own problems, like keeping these mutations hidden from the wider Imperium, or modifying their power armor in a way, that doesn't impede them and accounts for the possibility of digitigrade legs/quadruped movement or a wolflike muzzle. Maybe they could have specialized wargear, like the backpack gun the werebear in The Guardians has. Or maybe a special visor, that can split open, allowing to make bite attacks without having to remove the helmet beforehand. I could imagine something like that to be both cool and interesting.

i love the space wolves, love the wolf brothers...i hate that cawl was written as to trying and AT FIRST, succeeding at removing any gene flaws the space marines had...yeah thank you Blood Angels for yelling enough at GW to chance that. heroes can have flaws, it makes the space marines STAY HUMAN. or show that trying to force a human beyond it's limits will ALWAYS have consequences on the body or especially the mind. and hey wolves are cool, i dont get why everyone mocks them when the IRON HANDS exist, or the ULTRAmarines, or yknow...the literal fucking vampires with 13 vampire chapters.

So I wrote something elsewhere here on the Canis Helix, Fenris, and the Fenrisian Wolves, and why they all seem interlinked, I'll post it below. Be aware this is very long and based on distant memory from my Genetics degree (I do a quite different subject now lol). One thing I would mention though is that the Canix Helix is probably an extra strand of DNA (hence the "Helix" part of it) in Space Wolf Geneseed. It could be an extra chromosome (or more than one) with relevant information, or the Astartes might have a different structure to their DNA itself (we've found quadruple stranded DNA in some cells, with future technology making a stable multi-strand form of DNA to encode more information might be possible). The Astartes all seem to share a common genetic base with largely the same augmentation, but each individual Legion was also given extra genetic information coding towards their purpose and the base the Emperor used for differentiation of each Astartes. Early Astartes models, prior to the Primarch Project, were probably more like a mass produced version of that basic bodyplan (which is sort of what we see with Erda's bodyguard), but it didn't work (likely to do with either their behaviour or genetic stability), and He found that the Primarch's were essential in both controlling them and providing the genetic outline necessary for what He wanted for the Legion's. So basically it's an elongated strand (assuming that Astartes still follow the DNA plan of complex organisms on our planet being largely double stranded DNA for most cells with DNA G-Quadruplexes being found in some cells) of genetic information from this base, primed in some form that is quickly inserted into human cells and modifies them extensively (could be a viral mechanism given how they imbibe it, could also be some other protein or bionanotech construct designed to insert DNA in a specific way). This extra information is also what differentiates other Legion's, Thousand Son's likely have Psyker Gene's or Gene's thought to be associated with Psyker Powers (DAoT human's created the Navigator's, who are a Psyker offshoot, and they are very prone to mutations, could be based in this), the Salamanders would be based in adaptations for extremely hot environments that the DAoT scientists developed, Night Lord's and Raven Guard seem to have low-light adapations found in some troglodytes, and so on. Also rather than the Primarch's just adapting to their environment totally, I think they have a basic genetic line that predisposed certain features but their appearance itself matched the local population. They were directed onto planets that would suit their adaptations by some force (either Big E, Chaos, Erda, or some other yet unknown player like Cegorach), but their Legion's already had most of these features despite being Terran Born. Also concerning the Fenrisian Wolves, I think it's more likely a human offshoot as a result of extensive genetic modifications, and something the Emperor used as the basis for the Canis Helix. Like, ALL human's in 40k seem to be the product of genetic engineering back in the DAoT, with obviously millennia of interbreeding removing some of the potency in sone cases. But the reason why human's can adapt to Death World's, and the evolution of Abhumans in only 10,000 or so year's, all indicate that there's some extreme genetic adaptability, far more than modern humans, that has been utilized. Fenris was most likely a planet literally designed to be what it is, almost like a reserve for these incredible beasts that seem to stem from human mythology (they probably found some of them elsewhere and created others), but potentially alongside that it had either human colonists (probably landed there by accident) or a population on site to maintain it that had this genetic adaptability programmed to that environment. Over time these individuals adapted extremely quickly, but with the Fall and Old Night the genetic adaptability was left unchecked as people began to breed and mutants likely arose. The whole "there are no wolves on Fenris", well, the strangely human like Fenrisian Wolves are likely offshoots of genetically modified human's with canid aspects that ended up dominating the human aspects of their genome, but retained some of their intelligence and some features of the human bodyplan (Fenrisian Wolves have VERY human like features in some aspects, almost like the historical description of a werewolf). The Emperor was around, at minimum, during the DAoT, and He secured a bunch of genetic engineering data from that period (it's not as advanced or as detailed but was sufficient for the Custodes, Astartes, and Primarch's as well as other things) and likely based the Astartes Geneseed on data from the engineering used for populations on such world's, with the Primarch's being an ultimate expression of this process. The reason that Space Wolves basically turn into something resembling Fenrisian Wolves if given long enough, and the reason Fenrisian Wolves get along so well with both the Astartes and their Primarch of this lineage, is most likely because they share common genetic markers the Emperor used as a basis, then inserted it into His basic Astartes geneplan and augmentation process.

Suprised you never discussed how alot of the raven guard have traditions like spirit quests, the pouches they carry are similiar to indigenous tribes medicine pouches, they gotta gank a bird lol while tribes highly covenant eagle and hawk feathers and consider them blessings.
