The Tragic Final Images Of NASA's Opportunity Rover
► Subscribe: goo.gl/r5jd1F
Here, among the Martian rocks and sand, is the final resting place of one of the most important robotic explorers in human history, the Mars Opportunity rover.
The little robot was only supposed to last 90 days, but ended up exploring Mars for years, until one fateful day, it would go into hibernation mode, sleep and wait for a brutal global martian sandstorm to be over. But the Mars robotic explorer would never wake up again.
Get ready to discover the Opportunity rover’s mission, what it uncovered on the red planet, and learn how the mission finally came to an end for our heroic little robot.

It was very interesting to hear about Oppi's adventures. He made a great contribution to science with his amazing photos and studies of rocks and advanced us in the study of Mars. It would seem that this is just a piece of iron, but we all humanize it so much, invent a certain soul in it and realize with sadness that it has turned off forever. It's a little funny, but it's not that far from the truth. There is a soul in him, and everyone who followed his work, those who made and managed him, those who believed in success, everyone who thought about him, they all endowed him with a soul. . He evoked so many emotions that he simply could not help being "alive". In many ways, he is no less alive than a man who lived a long time ago, but remained in the culture or a fictional character who, despite the fact that the fictional one influenced the world around him. The same situation is with him. Well, sleep well, opportunity. You did a good job.😏

It would be interesting to see if we can develop a drill that we could use on a future robot in the landing crater to get a sample of the soil composition as far down as we can. Another interesting landing spot would be mars's North or southern poles where we know that like us there was once ice. Again it would be interesting to try and drill down as far as we can to see if there's still evidence of water. Somewhere underneath all that dust there has to be at least one underground cavern full of water, wouldn't it be awesome to find one.

@magesticchicen Год назад
@@olasek7972 hmm well I'm sure they could have engineered alternative solutions to it like shaking the panels then tilting them or giving the panels some sort of protective coating to stop them from being damaged etc It's NASA - they probably never added a similar feature knowing that it wouldn't be necessary to clean the panels for the intended duration of the mission (since it lasted much longer than intended)

There is a video from the control room when Ops tells the lead engineering advisor that they wanted to extend the mission and "do you think it could travel to a crater x km away?" ...Then, without consulting each other, individual members of the MER team all began to beam wake-up songs to Opportunity again. They picked songs that would jolt a sleep-deprived scientist out of bed: “For a time, they were all about high energy, let’s get going.” They played songs like “Start Me Up,” by the Rolling Stones, and “Kickstart My Heart,” by Mötley Crüe. “We had quite a bag of tricks of things to try to regain contact with the rover,” Dr. Squyres says. “We got all the way to the bottom of the bag.” “Nothing ever worked,” he says. “We tried eight months. Eight months. We tried everything that you could try and it just got down to the end and we’d done everything we could do.” But before they declared the mission over, Dr. Squyres had one last message to send to Mars: “the final wake up song.” Only, this time, there was no expectation of the song working. Dr. Squyres chose the jazz standard, “I’ll Be Seeing You” (1944), as sung by Billie Holiday.

Why there was never a robotic mission with objective to find and repair previously sent robotic explorers? If they were not out of energy, they could be given more tasks. It took a lot of effort to send them there. A robot with a brush may be able to revive Oppy's and Spirit's solar panels. Spirit's wheel maybe could be replaced. Some design changes for future rovers could facilitate repair (e.g. accessible charging ports, field-replaceable wheels, ...)
