This is honestly the most beautiful piece of Architecture I’ve ever seen. I recently finished a class where I saw this for the first time and I was mesmerized. The story behind it is just as memorable. I hope I can see it in person one day.

This would make a great movie. The elements are there. The antagonist and protagonist (Basil and Ivan). The objective to be achieved (melting the heart of the tyrant). The final resolution ( tyrant heart melted, riches donated to the peasants).

I remember a story. One land has a very rich man and a poor farmer. Rich man was a bad person and this poor farmer worshiped God in faith & action. One day this farmer saw a dream that the rich man of this land will die tomorrow. This farmer went to the rich man and told about his vision. He brought all doctors and kept with him to keep him safe. Next day the rich man got the news that the farmer died. Actually, the farmer was the rich man in spiritual wealth (not in worldly wealth)

The architecture of St. Basil's cathedral (inside and out) is completely amazing . It's one of the most beautiful (if not the most beautiful) cathedral's in the world . Listening to the short story about St. Basil he sounds very similar to St. Frances of Asisi .

It is nice, every time when they show Moscow or Russia, the St. Basil's Cathedral is always revealed, this is beautiful, good story in this video. I wonder what is inside the St. Basil's Cathedral, what is the entrance fee? They usually show outside not inside the Cathedral. Love to see that.

Vasily was born to serfs in December 1468 at the portico of the Epiphany Cathedral at Yelokhovo (now in Moscow). His father was named Jacob and his mother Anna. Originally an apprentice shoemaker, he went to Moscow when he was sixteen. There he helped those who were ashamed to ask for alms, but were in need of help. He adopted an eccentric lifestyle of shoplifting and giving to the poor to shame the miserly and help those in need. He went naked and weighed himself down with chains. He rebuked Ivan the Terrible for not paying attention in church. Vasily was said to have the gift of prophecy. When he died on August 2, 1552, or 1557, St. Macarius, Metropolitan of Moscow, served his funeral with many clergy. He is buried in St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow, which was commissioned by Ivan for the commemoration of his conquest of Kazan - and was named for the Saint later. Vasily was formally canonised in 1588. His feast day is celebrated on August 2 (August 15, N.S.).

Ivan the Formidable, not the Terrible. That’s what he is known as in Russia. What's not known is whether he killed his son or not. So any claims in that regard are mere speculation.

Pavel Ogloblin it’s also rumored that he blinded the man who built the cathedral! He sounds like a very evil person to me.

What a hopeful, beautiful message. If only we had more peasants melting hard hearts these days. :)

I love this building. It is very beautiful... I am kinda annoyed that people call it a "kremlin" because it isn't even a part of it.

Seth,I had heard that Ivan blinded the architect so that he would not be able to recreate another like the St Basil Cathedral, is this not true? My Russian/American friend told me that story.

If it is true, then it could be the reason as to why there is absolutely no other landmark like it in the world.
