Fun news - several edits later, this video’s still getting copyright claimed into oblivion, so if the ads are a nightmare, I apologize! Though, I am at least glad it’s not getting blocked, so, that’s, something . . . Also, CC available!
@@leonardoalfonso7080 I think the same person behind Bloodlust did Wicked City which has similar animation that looks ahead of it's time..... if your okay with it being very close to hent3i that is, not that I'm judging.
It's amazing that this is 22 years old and still has animation that is a thousand times better than what we get today. It is so gorgeous to look at, and the score is still awesome. I think Vampire Hunter D would make a great tv show. There are enough novels for the show runners to work with, I think.
It’s definitely not 1000x better than what we get today, when it come to pure visual quality of the animation. I definitely prefer the old animation style to the new styles, but it’s not objectively better. The new animation techniques have actually gotten so good that that I no longer like the animation. I want it to look like an anime, not real life. 80’s was the best era. 90’s was good and the first decade into the 2000’s had some bangers as well.
Same here! I heard about it in a WatchMojo video (yeah, go figure), and after I saw just a short clip, I knew I had to watch it...I literally just finished it and it's seriously the best vampire movie I've ever seen!
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a Tragic Story. But it works extremely well. It has a deep meaning if you pay attention. D is my favorite Anime/Manga character. I have seen so many anime/ read so many Manga. D is still my most Favorite character. I also have the Blu-ray Movie on my Shelf. :)
I first saw Bloodlust about 20 years ago now and recently watched it again, and after all this time I'm still as captivated and inspired by every facet of this piece of work. It holds up all these years later.
I enjoyed this . My bf loved this movie he watched it all the time . Id come in and Id say oh this movie again . He was killed in 2006 and today is his birthday he would have been 43 so I wanted to watch the movie. I also have a tattoo of Meier link and Charlotte on my inner left arm positioned so it is close to my heart. Every time I watch the movie I think about the beauty and complexities of him as I discover new things about the film . so thank you for this . Im sure if he was here he would have enjoyed it too . as an aside my name is Danielle and every now and then someone calls me or I sign things as D. cheesy I know but it makes me smile and think of him
I think that the weird talking patterns fit very well for the Barbarois, but there was definitely some audio mixing issues and dialogue problems. Absolutely loved Bloodlust, one of my favorite movies of all time, but it was also flawed for sure.
I started watching this video because I needed to at least hear someone else who loves the series, but instead i found what seems like a top-notch channel. Lucky me
I couldn't help laughing as you went through D's part. Idk if it was on purpose or if you haven't read the novels but a lot of your points are explored more in them. And D's motivation is very different.
I think it is true about what you said about the sub/ dub, but it also true that it is difficult to enjoy the beautiful animation and every variance and nuance in the anime while looking down to understand what every character is saying.
"He reufuses to let yer be on equal footing" do you realize the curse that eternal life is? Think about it. You live forever what is there to live FOR. Everyone dies. You get close to people just for them to die of old age or sickness or worse. You watch as everything you loved crumbles to dust around you, all the things that made your home home turns to dust akd loses its luster with time. The stones and banisters wither and blow away with the winds eventually. Paintings fade, books crumble to dust and you cant do anything but watch. Meyer is absolutely right to try and talk her out of it
Yeah, Meyer from my interpetation would do anything for her and that includes protecting her from anything that may harm her which includes immortality. To not let her lose the beauty that death can be and to not let her lose a normal life. Plus I think also Meyer could be afraid that her personality would change if he turned her into a vampire. I even think Meyer would let her go back to her old life with her family if she had wished it. God love how complex the hole story is.
As history shows, a woman will always make decisions that end up doing the most harm to her. Eternal life is something even Freezer admits is terrible.
That's understandable, but there is a lot of dialogue later with Charlotte & Meier talking about what happened in the village that very heavily implies that it was Meier who did it, which I think is a bit more conclusive in that regard
Fun fact: Legend has it Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll and every anime adaptation from said creator and director are all within the same universe. Think of it as a timeline, putting each adaptation in their proper historical timeline and making it work, plus or minus. Cheers 🍻
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! I adore VHD, and this is the only video I've found that really understands the things that draw me into the series so much. I've found a great channel! Also, I would recommend the VHD Manga, There are 8 volumes adapting the first 7 books in the series, the art is amazing and it's much easier to follow and consume than the novels themselves.
I read Demon Deathchase and can honestly say I understand why the movie detracted so much from the novel's plot. Everything after the scene at Barbarois is totally different in the novel and is way more depressing - almost to the point of being unenjoyable. Carmilla isn't in the book, events unfold differently, and the ending is not satisfying for any of the characters. The original Vampire Hunter D novel was better than its movie adaptation, but the converse is true in the case of Bloodlust vs. Demon Deathchase.
The moment where you compare the sub and dub scene of Charlotte meeting D, it's worthwhile to point out that D's silence in the sub is more in line with his character in the novels
I don't know if I've said it under this vidoe but jesus christ i love that old man! Funniest character ever! Rollin around on his little unicycle. I saw that and i knew i was in for something a little.... different
Really makes you think of that story Borgoth told to his brothers about the squirrel and the owl. His brothers reputation as vampire hunters was like the squirrel going out one last time before winter.
Also on the dub, is the bizarre thing of calling D a "dunpeal" which is a mistranslation of Dhampir - which is of course a term derived from European folklore, not Japanese, and should be somewhat familiar for anyone into vampire media, so surely not hard to get correct. Or so you'd think lol. There's a similar issue with calling Mayerling "Meier Link" too.
No Joke, I am German and for the whole movie I did not understand what they meant. I though they meant done peel, then I started googling and found the term "Dhampir", it made way more sense after that
I think you totally missed that Carmella is the one who turned that village to slow down the hunters. The giveaway is all the bats. Anywhere in the movie you see a horde of bats signifies Carmella having been there. Edit- the spirit of Carmella
I love that the costumes for the men (mainly the team of hunters) are just as ridiculous, or even more so as those of the women. No boob windows, but TWO ab windows. Very subversive.
The lore of these films and comics are really interesting especially with vampires, im not sure Meyer could have made Charlotte the same as him as I think he and the nobles were born vampires.
"The English dub is...less than stellar." Hilariously the film was shot in English first & was show in Japanese theaters with Japanese subtitles. It was ONLY given Japanese audio for DVD releases in Japanese. Not to mention Hideyuki Kikuchi praised the choice of the English dubbing instead of Japanese
O.o This is the second video I've seen talking about this film where they call the novel 'Vampire Hunter D: Demon Deathcase' when it is actually 'Vampire Hunter D: Demon Deathchase." CHase, like some dogs will do to cars. o.O I find this phenomenon...very strange.
Well, I've only now realized I've been saying it wrong. I genuinely thought it was Demon Deathcase. Quite the Mandela Effect situation going on, lol Granted, it's only one letter off, so it's probably very easy for someone to misremember the word and not realize.
Legit confused by anybody not loving the English dub. To me, these are the definitive voices of the characters when I read the books. Only complaint would be John DiMaggio not being utilized well (or overutilized) and one of the other multi-character actors (Charlotte's brother, I wanna say). But the main cast? Knocked it out of the fuckin' park IMO. Andy Philpot has the stoic yet secretly compassionate voice of D. Reserved but very direct. And Michael McShane as Left Hand is inspired. It just sucks that when it comes to dubbing anime, scripts aside, everybody has to try and make it work with the movements of the mouth to some degree to make it believable and sometimes that means not having enough space between sentences to sound like the character is as contemplative as they clearly are.
on subs v dubs - I could not do the Cowboy Bebop live action because the lack of a Japanese language audio and English subtitle mode spoiled the immersion for me
Vampire Hunter D is...almost an exception for me, though. It isn't at the level of Kiki's Delivery Service, where they got an A-list movie star to voice the lead, but it does the trick while spoiling less of it than many other anime.
It's the typical ' white male reviewer showing his pick me credentials ' to women every where to show how ' enlightened ' and non misogynistic he is. So common and tiresome. 🥱
This guy is picking at straws that only he sees. It's entertaining, gorgeously animated, and a pretty good story. I get the feeling that this guy wants every movie to be "cinema " and a searing expose into the human condition.
Inthe distant future Vampires live on thedark side of the moon. There is some kind vampire city up there. Charlote became vampire, so technicaly she was dead...
Some good points, but the marxist/feminist reading was really forced and out of place: Japan has almost no wokery as of today and even much less so 20 years ago - the female characters actually act in a rather Japanese way. Also, so much for Charlotte being a symbol of patriarchal blah blah, when Leila in the novel had to become the sex toy of the Marcus brothers.
by the time we get all the novels in english we will have a lot of stuff finished from the likes of all of sanderson's work to re zero to one piece the franchise.
Personally, while I like the film as a whole and find it wonderful to both watch and listen to, the only beef I have is about Charlotte and Meyer’s relationship. While I think he hypnotized her with some sort of magic, the fact that she is willing to be will Meyer just confuses me because, we’ll, there’s no backstory on how the two of them came to know each other. I mean, sure, Charlotte’s pretty and all, but it doesn’t make sense to me for a vampire to just go after a pretty lady that he’s never seen. Has he seen her before one evening and found her to be ‘the one I’ll take’? Did he use magic to survey the area during the day to search for a beautiful woman and land his vision on Charlotte when she was being kind to someone? Did he send out a human servant to search the crowd for potential candidates for Meyer to take? I mean, there is nothing that explains how and why Meyer specifically singled out Charlotte as his choice of bride. The only thing that I can think of for this is that there was something in the original novel that was overlooked when this production was being made, but otherwise, I believe she was hypnotized by him without him biting her. This is just me though.
I loved the animation. I wish there was more of meier and Charlotte. We need more of them together. I also wanted to see more of D, or see him show emotions etc. Like not be so stoic all the time
