One of the most underrated bands ever, ask any Canadian. I worked with a few Canadians in the hospitality industry in Australia and they introduced me to them, love them
Ha ha, yep! Not underestimated in Canada though! Gord was our poet laureate and he wrote songs about Canada and Canadian history. I think that’s why they didn’t catch on in the US so much, but were so treasured here in Canada. CBC aired their last concert over the Olympics, with no commercial breaks. Almost 12 million tuned in, our current population was 36 million at the time 😍
There were actual meme's when they did their farewell tour that Canada was closed and it was true. Most of us were riveted to the screens knowing it was the last time we'd see them perform.
@@chrisw3421 arguably a way more important band than Rush however. They spoke of our country. The history, good and bad. They told our stories. They were Canadians to the very core and taught us to do the same proudly
The lead singer’s name is Gord Downie. He died of a rare form of brain cancer in October of 2017. Gord Downey decided that he wanted to go on one final tour, after his diagnosis, and after going through surgery. The band’s last concert ended in their hometown of Kingston, Ontario in August of 2016. It was broadcast live on Canada’s national broadcaster, the CBC, and watched by over 11,000,000 people. I was one of them, and both Downie’s courage, and the band’s support of him, had me in tears. You have to react to one of the songs from that concert! ( Canada’s Prime Minister was in the audience crying; something I’ll never forget.)
A Canadian treasure.Their final concert in 2016,was broadcast nationally on TV,radio and internet. It was a heartbreaker, knowing lead singer Gord Downie was dying of cancer at the time.
Oh I love the Tragically Hip I saw them live at the Air Canada Centre years ago. Great choice Adam and thank you Harri. Such a sad loss of Gord Downie.
Thank you Harri. I also had requested The Tragically Hip. Not Necessary Ahead By A Century Wheat Kings Little Bones Poets New Orleans Is Sinking The lead singer, Gord Downie, sadly has died of brain cancer. His wonderful vibrato silenced. Another great Canadian Band.🇨🇦🇨🇦 Another great story teller. Please keep listening to really enjoy The Hip. Thanks to Adam and Harri. Great reaction. Cheers from Canada. 🇨🇦
You've just scratched the surface w/ this band .. they have Rock & Roll bangers like 'Blow At High Dough' & 'New Orleans is Sinking' to very introspective, poetic tunes like this one and 'Ahead by a Century' and many more. Singer / song writer recently passed .. all of Canada mourned :( #RIPGord
The pride of Canada, up there right next to Rush and Neil Young. They're a little more special though because they're all ours, having never seen the international successes that those other artists achieved.
I'm From the States and REM was not one of my favorite bands But I love the Hip this band is so tight and Gord was one of the best front man and genuinely great person who has made his Country proud RIP Mr Dowine
The Tragically Hip. Canada's treasure. We lost the lead singer, Gord Downie a few years back. We knew he was dying and he went on one last tour. Broke the entire country's heart. He was a beautiful soul. Many songs about Canadian history in their repertoire too. New Orleans is Sinking, Blow at High Dough, Courage, LIttle Bones, Boots or Hearts, Ahead By a Century, Poets, Locked in the Trunk of a Car, Nautical Disaster, Something On, and... oh man, the song list is just vast and varied and you will not be disappointed.
as well as his music, I was really into his interactions with our Indigenous People ... he didn't announce never-ending committees or vacuous study groups - he rolled up his sleeves and jumped in ... RIP, my fellow Canadian
I once described Gord's voice as a vocal existential crisis. After 130 shows (including the final Kingston show, RIP In Gord We Trust) I'm still left feeling like there were so many moments I should have seen in shows I couldn't go to.
The HIP are Rock Royalty in Canada. They even 'deafened' Queen Elizabeth II and her late husband Prince Philip when they performed for them during The Queen's Jubilee in 2002.
I hear what you are saying about REM. I hear a little Warren Zevon and Harry Chapin in voice and delivery. I've never listened to this band but love this song and I'll be checking them out this weekend! Thanks Harri for bringing an old girl a new sould!
From one old girl to another. I have loved this band for sooooo many years and miss seeing them so much. I agree, I hear some Warren Zevon and I get the Harry Chapin characteristic, though I had never really caught the Harry piece before you mentioned it. I miss both Harry and Warren as much as I miss Gord and The Hip. This tune really has that REM vibe going on. I hope you love everything you check out this weekend. It doesn't all sound like REM. They really do have a sound all their own. Gord was a great poet and much of what he wrote about involved experiences that were unique to and shared by most Canadians, but he wrote many songs that anyone, anywhere can connect with. Check out "New Orleans is Sinking" and "Ahead by a Century." Oh and my favourite "Grace, Too"
As with most Tragically Hip songs, BOBCAYGEON is a slice of Canadian life. The town of Bobcaygeon is considered "cottage country", it's a few hours outside Toronto and known as a summer getaway. In this song, a cop that works in Toronto is lamenting that he can't spend more time with his lover in this idyllic location. It also references a race riot that happened in Toronto in 1933 in Christie Pits park.
Legendary Canadian Band, started doing the College And University scenes around Kingston Ontario, lots of Canadian references in the scenery and locations in around Canada. Their Song Library is huge lots of good songs to listen to, like "New Orleans is Sinking", "Wheat Kings", "Ahead by a Century", "Fifty Mission Cap", "My Music at Work". "Little Bones", "Blow at High Dough", "Courage", "Boots To Hearts", "38 years old", etc. They are also known as "The Hip" Gord Downie was the lead singer.
As weird as it is for someone not from Canada to understand.. we like The Tragically Hip MORE than hockey. Yes, you heard right.. hockey and maple syrup are not even close 🙈 ..we never ever shut down broadcasting the Olympics in the middle of it, and put on 3 hour commercial free show, for hockey.. but for the Hip, we did that and damn near made a holiday out of it 💪
The Hip have a way of weaving multiple sounds throughout their music. New Orleans is Sinking has some folk/blues/alternative. 38 years old shows their storytelling songwriting abilities. My Canadian heart is so happy you are listening to them
Gord Downey was a Canadian treasure. I love the official video and studio version where his voice is a bit more subtle. A great performer. Nice reaction.
Harri, you’re just scratching the surface of Canadian Bands. Try I Go Blind by 54-40, I’m An Adult Now by The Pursuit Of Happiness, The Things I Do For Money by The Northern Pikes, or anything by Bruce Cockburn, Rose Above The Sky, or Strange Waters, or Creation Dream, or Birmingham Shadows.
I have seen the Tragically Hip in concert too many times to remember. If people were expecting to hear the songs sung the same way as the studio productions, they were sorely disappointed. Maybe Gord looked a bit the like Michael Stripe of REM, but I think both bands sound different. Gord actually kind of reminds me of Jim Morrison of the Doors -- never knowing what to expect. He often improvised and the band would follow his lead. Bobcaygeon is one of my fav songs of all time... still makes me tear up no matter how many times I have listened. Love your reactions, Harri.
Just found your channel. I have loved this song for such a long time. I spent time in Bobcaygeon, on Pigeon Lake when I was young/teens. It was the place to summer, and not too long of a drive up north from Buffalo. They used to play in Buffalo a lot, and we were lucky to see them often. It's funny how emotional it is to listen to it now, a combination of nostalgia and the sadness of Gord's passing.
@harribest Reactions, maybe 15 years ago or so I was at a concert in a club, I believe it was By Divine Right (a small Canadian band) and the guitarist walked down into the crowd mid-song and handed the guitar to someone there who he knew. The guy took the guitar and absolutely shredded a solo. It was a pretty awesome moment.
"Do they remind you of REM?" The Hip are what would happen if The Stones and REM had an illegitimate 5 headed baby that they left to be raised by wolves. Honestly, not the best clip to react to of you're not completely familiar with the band. Gord was not at his best after the brain surgery, and for the first time ever he needed a prompter for lyrics, but he was a fucking legend and we loved them for giving us closure. I was fortunate to be at the final show after about 130 Hip concerts over 28 years, and the emotion was too much. Check out the official video, or the concert video "That Night In Toronto" for the real impact of how magical The Trag could be.
Road Apples, so incredible! Received the cassette by accident from Columbia House. Long Time Running is another great one from that album. Great LP from start to finish.
When I first saw them on SNL Gord reminded me of Stipe performing LMR on SNL earlier. As I became more familiar with both bands, they seemed less similar to me. The Hip did a great n cover of It's the End of the world.on the night REM. got their hall of fame award.
I always try to request some Canadian Content. I grew up in the Vancouver Punk scene in the 80's and it was the best place for music on earth. Everyone knew everyone and The Hip brought that same vibe. Didn't matter who you were or where you were from if you got around a campfire and someone started jamming The Hip on an acoustic, everyone joined in and you were part of the family. I can't watch the Hip now without smiling but the smile is a little sadder after li losing Gord.
thanks for your hip reaction! 🙂much love from canada for doing multiple hip reactions. i look forward to more. 🥰 the summer that this came out, it was the soundtrack for many beach bonfires, backyard parties, and cars cruising to the beach. beautiful hip song. 🙂
Green Day. During their some of their shows the lead singer Billy Joe Armstrong will pull a "random" person from the audience to play the guitar. I'm sure there's video of it. I saw them in '98 and he did it on the song "Basketcase".
Lead singer Gord Downie (RIP) could be a bit ... theatrical when performing. Hope you check out more Hip , but studio versions might be a better choice.
Rob Rock, also Canadian, produced Metallica during 90's. He worked with a wack of bands including the Hip. He stated that their musicianship was on par with groups like Metallica.
Hey Harri, what a nice channel you have!, you should listen to The War on Drugs, specially this one: Thinking Of a Place, ITS terrific! Greetings From México!
They were contemporaneous to REM, in fact, except the The Hip was much more consistent. REM had some great songs, but some god-awful ones too. The Hip were much more uniformly high-quality. RIP Gord Downie.
