For Canadians of a certain age, The Hip have been the soundtrack to our coming of age. Every house party, road trip, and bad breakup, Gordie and the boys have been there. They truly are Canada’s heart. They went on a final cross country tour after Gord was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The CBC broadcast the final show, live, coast to coast. Check out Long Time Running, a documentary about the Last Tour. It gives you a really good view into what an amazing human Gord was. RIP. Annnnd now I’m crying.

"The place of honor that Mr. Downie occupies in Canada’s national imagination has no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close." - The New York Times, October 2017.

I tried to explain the Hip to an American friend of mine who happens to live in Athens, Ga (home of REM). I said "Imagine if MIchael Stipe died...?" at which point she interrupted to ask "Canada thinks Gord Downie is an asshole, too?" Sooooooooooooooooo...I guess the Michael Stipe comparison is not the best.

"Nautical Disaster" was probably the most generic-sounding song off their Day for Night album. "Grace, Too" was definitely much more of a standout, as was "So Hard Done By". And most of their back catalogue for that matter. What did set "Nautical Disaster" apart was the lyrics.

@@christiankalk4668 Definitely wrong haha. Nautical Disaster is unique as fuck. The song has no chorus, it goes along the same progression the whole song which is completley against most rock tunes with a verse chorus verse chorus bridge chorus progression. If you actually listen to it, it came from a jam in between one earlier tune and thats how the guys recorded it. Listen to it again with a more acute ear and you will understand.

Many don't know but Dan had a hard time trying to convince SNL to host The Hip because they were a Canadian band. Finally after much debate they gave in and invited the band. During the first song Gord points out he is changing the lyrics of Grace, Too (he did this a lot live) and basically he said to America "Thanks but no thanks" he won't be knocking on their door of success and instead The Hip went back to Canada and toured every inch of it. This was the night that the Hip became Canada's band.

All my Canadian friends absolutely love this band. I've never listened to them so this was a first for me. Not what I expected. Michael Stipe comparison is spot on for me. I got an Allman Bros vibe from the guitarists in the first song. Knowing that they played a last concert &, I believe, it was like a Canadian National holiday, due to the lead singer dying made watching bittersweet. He seemed to be full of emotion & definitely had a good voice. Glad I finally checked them out. Good job.

Personally, have never found them to sound like other bands. Especially as someone else noted regarding the structure of Nautical Disaster. Not a bunch of rhyming couplets, but a powerful narrative which goes against traditional popular songwriting arrangements. Regarding lyrics - Gord often improvised- on Grace Too he switched “He said I’m Tragically Hip” from “He said I’m fabulously rich.” An interesting point to note is the last line Gord sings in “Nautical Disaster.” It is actually the last line of a song by the band Skydiggers called “A Penny More.” Which is a brilliant song, and worth a listen to for anyone.

One interesting thing they told me was they were so loved in Canada when their final tour happened it was broadcast free across Canada’s public tv channel, and when the lead singer passed the Prime Minister even made comments of mourning. My understanding of the appeal is the lyrics. Good review by the way.

The last improvised verse that Gord sings right at the end of Nautical Disaster is from the song Penny More by the Skydiggers, another indie Canadian band that reached moderate success on the Canadian charts. The early 90s produced a lot of indie/alt-rock bands that reached national success, like the Skydiggers, Rheostatics, The Pursuit of Happiness, Junk House, The Barenaked Ladies, The Odds, etc. The Hip was at the forefront because they crossed over and appealed to both alt-rock and contemporary/hard rock audiences.

You nailed it. Picking up on the pocket (so important with this band), the versatility of the bass player (who is hugely underrated even by fans of the band), the solo in the outro (very common with them) and the way lead singer Gord Downie commands attention. This, in truth, is not a great performance by the band - they're a little tight for them, I think. They sound nervous. One thing you didn't pick up on (but it's a first listen, so why would you) is the unusual structure of Nautical Disaster: No chorus, no verses, no bridge. Lyrically, it's their best song, IMHO. "Anyway, Susan, if you like, our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory as those fingernails scratching on my hull." Great reaction!

For decades, Canadian TV and radio has had Canadian content requirements. Imagine being a radio programmer and having to make sure that 30% of what you aired was Canadian in origin. It made a lot of "stars" out of mediocre bands. The Tragically Hip were different, and if you haven't delved into their history and music more deeply, I suggest that you do.Gord Downie was a performer, a singer, but most importantly he was Canada's unofficial poet laureate. For decades The Hip were the soundtrack to Canada's lives, especially in the summers. Gord's tragic death from cancer was preceded by their last tour, Gord's goodbye, ending in their home town of Kingston Ontario. The songs you reacted to are well known, but both were from relatively early in their career. They were reflective of the fact that grunge didn't only come from Seattle. For different sounds from The Hip, I suggest listening to New Orleans Is Sinking, 38 Years Old, Boots or Hearts, Little Bones, Born In The Water, Courage (For Hugh MacLennan), Wheat Kings, Ahead By A Century, Bobcaygeon (Ontario's anthem), The Darkest One, The Drop-Off, and of course Long Time Running. Great music regardless of where you are, it just touches Canadian hearts a little more. Take a moment to listen to Rick Mercer, another Canadian treasure, tell a short tale about Gord here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-utSEoGFh1tI.html

I'm a 58yr old Canadian and NO disrespect towards Gord Downie (RIP), HE WAS A NATIONAL TREASURE. BUT, in THIS old Canadian pothead/rockers opinion, the band that represents Canada best is called RUSH. Formed in 1968 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A true "Power Trio". The lyrics are based on the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, a writer and philosopher who grew up in Russia, but moved to the US as a young adult. The link I posted is the official 40th Anniversary version that RUSH released, that tells the story to the song in Comic book / story board format. Its EXCELLENT. www.songfacts.com/facts/rush/2112

I'm actually a reeeeally big Rush fan....I've heard almost everything on that list, so unfortunately I can't do an honest reaction to most of them. "Xanadu" is in the que already, because it's a live performance and I'll be reacting to the performance...and the drum solo from Germany is also already in the que, just a different version. I DID put "Working Man" from your list in the que, because it's live and I can react to the performance.

I love this band. I miss Gordie so much. He was a beautiful human being. This song is probably my favourite. Gord Downie is "performing". His vocals are pure passion for what he's singing. He is a very powerful, passionate singer. If you check out a concert specifically New Orleans is Sinking. He improvises lyrics, makes stuff up, tells you a story and is completely entertaining. He engages the audience. We Ontarians love our Gord Downie and The Hip. They are a national treasure.

Thanks for the heads up on you already reacting to Nautical Disaster Dave . For me a lot of their music / songs were not ground breaking or really pushing the envelope musically , however Gord Downie’s lyrics always stood out . He wrote a lot about Canadian history or events in such a poetic way . Another song from their Day For Night album ( 1994 ) was called Yawning Or Snarling . This is the chorus line : (Take a look at this photograph, clearly his teeth were bared) (He could have been yawnin' or snarling) the story was never clear Love that image he evokes with words of you looking at a picture of a dog mouth open teeth bared … yawning or snarling ?

He's doing that bc Gord just does what feels right in the moment of a performance. His presence was different for sure but just so authentic.

The Tragically Hip is a hard band to quantify. Hard to judge them on one or two songs. They were literally the soundtrack of many millions of Canadians. They jumped genres all of the time while still keeping the blues inspired sound. Their evolution as a small band to an iconic Canadian band was over decades. Each song and album built on the last. No one says that they were best in the world musicians, but the band had a way to communicate with people that most bands lack. Closest American equivalence I can think of is Bruce Springsteen in his most influential times but still doesn’t quite echo what the Hip were.

A great and very tight band, they very much served Gord. Guitar solos to close were quite normal, they were a band who could chug endlessly while Gord ad-libbed, free styled and went off on streams of his imagination. - critics have often described him as a shaman. New songs might come from the jams that songs turned into. Difficult to encapsulate in a one song at a time performance. I believe Dan Akroyd agreed to do the show if the Hip were booked. - and many people point to this SNL as the band maintaining its stance and playing songs they wanted to - they already had a back catalogue of songs that could have brought the house down. They chose songs they believed to have merit. - you may feel the sound wasn’t that unique, but the vocals and lyrics always were. Gord is often cited with teaching Canadians their history.

I think there best song is "Ahead by a Century". You had mentioned John Cage in your video about Pearl Jam's Bugs, and he was an inspiration for a Tragically Hip Song Tiger the Lion which is a pretty hectic song. Albums after Day for nights (which these songs came from) were received much better though may not have had state side releases.

TH passed me by for a long time, a *very* long time as it goes (they had next to no exposure in The UK, as far as I know) but I stumbled into them quite recently and have been very happy about it! The more I dig into them, the more I like them. Two guitars that compliment each other very well, an extremely tight and solid rhythm section and an utterly unique frontman/songwriter in Gord Downie. He had the same sort of gift of storytelling as Steve Harris/Iron Maiden, IMHO.

I seen them and /or Gord Downie about 10 times over 25 years, one of the last times i seen them it was at rock the shores festival and a thunder/lightning storm paused the concert for over an hour and The Hip came out even as lightning was threatening above! They have so many great songs! New Orleans is Sinking is a great one you should check out! They can mezmerize you. A few songs broke the US charts but not many. so under appreciated. thanks for this.. think ima go and listen to a Hip playlist now lol

Canada’s most revered bar/jam-band. You might have stood a chance of hearing them when New Orleans is Sinking came out in ’89 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LAZUsCONjIQ.html (Nautical Disaster came out of extended jams over this blues rock song), or when Courage ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FhpezwGtDEg.html (probably their most US-like ’90s power-pop / alt-rock track) came out in ’92. In Canada, pretty much every single was top-10 if not top-5, but Courage was probably the only top-20 American track. I get it; it's kind of hard to break through into the US when Grace Too would have competed with Betterman, Black Hole Sun / Spoonman, and Rotten Apple / Nutshell. One of the other Canadian bands around Toronto that was around at the turn of the ’90s was I Mother Earth. Mike Clink produced their first album, and it had some great singles that people took to calling funk-metal. Tracks like Rain Will Fall ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SxfVaufgdaE.html might just grab your attention, and turn it northbound.

I love The Hip, interesting take on their music. You should know that Gord (the vocalist, RIP) was quite nervous in this set since this was one of their first "big" shows being broadcasted to a large American audience since they mostly did Canadian shows before. I would definitely check out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Yxi5rXtqbVw.html where they performed Courage at Woodstock. The album that they're playing off of in this vid is a lot more melancholic, but Fully Completely has a lot more lively songs like Courage. And you can see Gordie is a lot more charismatic in that vid and he really gets into it lol. Another thing that many Canadians love about them is Gord's ability to write amazing and cryptic lyrics that a lot of other bands couldn't compare to (imo). They sang a lot about Canadian history and lore that many Canadians themselves didn't even know about, and they wrote it in a way that was amazingly poetic. This is the first vid of yours I'm seeing, pretty cool take overall, good to see The Hip still getting some recognition.

Gord's singing and performance style are very eccentric, but we love that about him. The Hip are pro-cannabis (recreationally and medically), and Trudeau was friends with Gord, so he chose the 1 year anniversary of Gord's death as our legalization day for recreational use.

I know this video is 2 years old. But here I go !!!! You are missing what Tragically Hip is about. Your review was based strictly on their instrumental abilities, which i guess are important, but what you missed were the lyrics, and the stories behind them. But being American I wouldnt expect you to know anything about Canada. pretty much every song tells a story about a Canadian, a social injustice and so much more next time focus some of your thoughts on the message rather wether you think they have talent. Im not sure if I like you yet, but ill say your honest and say what you believe, so you cant be that bad lol

New subscriber here and I'm really impressed with your way of reacting to music. Not that impressed with the content you were asked to react to here though! The Hip have some really good songs, a lot of them having a story worth finding out, others simply showcasing their minimalistic, yet aggressive garage band sound. This particular live performance for some reason left it all lacking somehow. I've seen them in concert 3 times and they nailed each performance! A better - quick - intro to the Hip might have been the official videos for "New Orleans is sinking" or "Lil Bones"...even "Cordelia". And you know you gotta crank it too... LOL

Solid review.. came to catch up on a video or two before work, had to move this to front of the list, obviously lol. Michael Stipe comparison spot on. He's very animated and eccentric on stage, that was kinda subdued a bit. I suggested it to someone else, but the documentary "Long Time Running" would give you a great understanding of the band and their relationship with Canadians. Maybe even possible patreon review 🤷‍♂️😂 just spitballing. But loved the review, actually thought it could go either way. Don't worry, If you didn't like it, I wouldn't hold it against ya lol Side note. I think I've heard other reactors say something about that small screen within the screen to get around copywriter laws - if this makes since. Not sure if that's true, but I shared that link, and in Canada, SNL clips are extremely hard to find online - especially RU-vid . But anyways, thanks .. good review 🤙
