Road Apples album with Songs Like; Long Time Runnin' for sad times And 3 Pistols just kicks ass!! As the lead singer for over 20 years I don't even have time to get into their previous albums with Songs like; Blow at High Dough, Boots or Hearts or their other albums,,,,too many amazing to list. Gord was a true poet.
As Canadians, we tend to get excited by our home artists making it big in their home country. All too often they have to go to the States to become known, so yeah, we get excited when they are known & honored as Canadian. Tragically Hip is a group near & dear to our hearts for so many reasons!
Ahhh Gordy we miss you Rip. That man with brain cancer. Put on his last tour so sick. For us fans, the band wanted him to limit sonhs, he wouldn't have it. Would get on stage the words would just come to him! The passion dedication was impeccable ❤
@@Wishes890 I was at two of the shows, one in Vancouver and one in Toronto. Gord also had notes taped in several places on the floor. You can also see him referring to them often in the final televised show from Kingston.
62 yr old Canadian here. Many of my generation consider The Tragically Hip, to be the best 🇨🇦 Band of our time. I scratch my head wondering why they never seemed to explode in the U.S. Check out "Blow at High Dough" and "New Orleans is Sinking" from their 1989 Album "Up To Here".
52 yr old in Austin, Tx..Seen em 7 times..Greatest band nobody's heard of..Them and Morphine..Best thing to come outta Canada IMO...Unbelievable talent
They had an SNL appearance, did New Orleans Is Sinking from what I remember. I guess the studio and greater audience were so turned off by Gord's dancing! And then TH was considered too weird to become big in the US. As a Canadian I think it's hilarious they thought TH was too weird! Usually if Americans have construction criticism for Canadians it's that we're too vanilla. Little do they know we're all dancing like Gord in our homes 😂 Rip Gord, no one can dance like you ❤️
I'm 60 in November, and I would have to totally agree with what you are saying , The hip is absolutely the greatest band of our time . RIP Gord, we miss you ❤😢
American here, never will get bored of the Hip either. Saw them live in West Germany long long ago and no one knew them! < 20 people in the crowd at the small venue. we were buying them beers and putting them on the stage!
Polo I guarantee you will find yourself going back and listening to this track over and over again. It grows on you each and every time. When it first came out 2 decades ago, I was neutral. Today I absolutely love it.
@@slaydesaid8741 Yes for me, it is the highlight of the Album and the best song they had released since Phantom Power. I've got a feeling it will continue to grow on Hip fans for decades to come...
the entire Tragically Hip catalog is spectacular! One of the most underrated bands in history. NEw ORleans is Sinking Locked in the trunk of a car Wheat Kings Bobcagyoen 38 years old Little Bones Opiated On the Verge
Bob Caygeon got me hooked. New Orleans is Sinking got me up dancing and singing; my daughters too when they came along. Wheat Kings took a few listens but I can't stop returning to it. And the story it tells
With our captain and commander Red Green as an avatar I find it hard you haven't heard Canada's history keepers. I would say start at the beginning and listen in order. I would put Saskaphiledelphia right after Road apples though.
The 'forget your skates dream' seems to be in reference to a hockey player or skater forgetting one the most important things about playing the game and giving your best effort...the skates. Growing in Canada (the band is Canadian) and understanding just how much people love hockey it would actually be more of a nightmare to forget your skates. So that much better that it happens in a dream.
Grew up in Northern Ontario by Red Lake. A small place called Ear Falls. Every single boy in my school was on a hockey team. We moved there at 5 years old from California. I learned to be Canadian with a stick in my hands. I practiced in the road with the kids until the lights came on. We all did.
When Gord Downey performed on stage he used his entire body. He swayed, he gyrated, he oscillated like liquid. When I hear this track it takes me right back to the 3-4 times I saw him live. He broke your heart - not only with the melody and lyrics but also with his emoting and by breaking not only his voice - but also his body.. Spiritual.
One thing Americans have to understand, The Hip is literally the top selling band in Canada of all time, and Gord Downie was eulogized as "Canada's Poet" long before he even passed- hell, the province of Ontario created an official Poet Laureate position specifically to honour him after his passing. It's pretty much impossible to overstate how much this band has influenced Canadian music over the last ~40 years
Not to split hairs, but Celine Dion, Shania Twain, and Michael Buble all have more physical and digital sales than The Hip, which sit at #4. Interesting list, with artists like Justin Beiber and Drake far down the list.
@@macfady2181 Not to split hairs, but Shania, Celine, and Michael are all SOLO ARTISTS, while The Hip was a BAND, which is why I called it the top-selling BAND during their active years 🤦
Another version of this song, recorded in Toronto's main theatre - Massey Hall, with the singer Feist is also exceptional. They recorded it a few years after Gord Downie died. It's very powerful.
For sure. It gets you right in the feels. The sound is ethereal. For anyone curious, it's here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L4C98Cyn0Yk.htmlsi=gNjsxozPjLUBQFSy
Introduced by Gordon Lightfoot, in the middle of the pandemic, Feist was the only artist the remaining Hip members would accept. Note that they are not on the stage, as Massey Hall was still under renovation. Lightfoot was the last artist before the renovation and re-opened the hall.
Am not saying others can't like the HIP in fact I love it when people outside Canada find the HIP. However and I think alot of Canadians love this HIP cause, they made music (not all the songs but alot) for Canada and never apologized for it not being famous outside our country. The song is named after a book from a graphic novel by Canadian cartoonist Seth.
I live close to Canadian border in Niagara Falls Ny……first exposed to them at work where only the radio station that’s came in clear was out of Canada….I kept hearing the songs and said who is this I really like it❤️…..a co worker knew and loved them and gave me 3 cds he burned for me….I have been obsessed ever since!!……about 15 years ago…..❤❤❤❤❤
The Hip ❤ forever. It doesn't matter where artists are from, whether I like a song or not. Geography does have it's influence. England seems to produce the majority of TOP rock (?) The Tragically Hip are worth exploring the entire catalog. Up To Here is amazing; Blow at high dough, New Orleans is Sinking!!!
Check out what the New York Times said about Gord Downie. Quite a tip of the Hat to Our Canadian 🇨🇦 legend The place of honor that Mr. Downie occupies in Canada’s national imagination has no parallel in the United States. Imagine Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan and Michael Stipe combined into one sensitive, oblique poet-philosopher, and you’re getting close. The Tragically Hip’s music “helped us understand each other, while capturing the complexity and vastness of the place we call home,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement on Wednesday. “Our identity and culture are richer because of his music, which was always raw and honest - like Gord himself.”
This band was childhood friends & started playing together since high-school, the way the follow eachother, it was a life time dance.Gord was a poet,a story teller & he told the stories of our childhood, what it means to be Canadian. He lefft a hole in all of us RIP Gord
As always, love your reaction. As a Canadian, especially with The Hip, we always appreciate the flowers. The Hip are also Another lyric heavy band. Gord is the every man who’s a hidden poet, bring up the lyrics with these guys, they won’t disappoint. Gords cadence when he sings is even better when you see how he breaks down the words, I think you’d love it Polo. As always, hope everything is good brethren 👊🙏❤️
This song is the very last of the Hip's great tunes. Yes they produced several albums after this one, but if I was to list their top couple dozen tunes, this one would be the most recent. Check out the version they did as a tribute after Gord Downie passed away, with Fiest singing. Pure Magic! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-L4C98Cyn0Yk.htmlsi=JidQgQ_YPqmyFxEL
Bud, I’m telling you of these guys years now. Locked in the trunk of a car has been my suggestion. There are so many more! Ahead by a century, New Orleans is sinking…. Too many to list.
I never really got the Hip in my younger years. I was a metal/punk/grunge type kid. But this song/album was when I truly fell in love with the band. I have such great memories of hitting the road with my future wife to go to our first hip concert. This song just hits my nostalgia so hard. I've never seen any other band live more than once. But we have seen the hip 8 or 9 times since this album's tour, and would definitely still be going if we could. RIP Gord. Thank you for giving me the best live show performances of my 40 years. I'm sad for anybody who never got the chance.
One of my favorite lyrics from the Hip (and there is a lot of them) “In your forget your skates dream” as a Canadian former hockey player this was a something that happened to me all of the time. Their songs strike a chord with people because it is just so damn honest. Their songs speak to Canadians because they have a tuning fork for what it means to be Canadian. They have captured the ethical, moral and values of growing up in Canada. Forever will be my most beloved band.
I must have uneducated eardrums lol...I REALLY enjoy listening to what I know of the HIp, don't know this track. I just didn't get it. Nice melody but I didn't understand the concept...otherwise down to earth guys riding their tour bus dressed in white suits performing for the filthy rich and old fashioned people? Not sure what I;m missing. Still love your reactions though and I appreciate your open mind about music.
It's funny, I really like this video. I often go as far as to call it a masterpiece. There are so many countervailing images throughout and the art directing and casting are for me flawless. I find it an incredibly engrossing. Which is interesting as nothing is said to actually drive the narrative.
Hip videos are pretty concept and not necessarily anything to do with the lyrics. The lyrics are always pretty impressionistic takes on some very specific Gord Downie idea that he wrapped up in poetry and hid from you
Love The Hip! I really think you'd like Nautical Disaster, Ahead By A Century, Gus The Polar Bear, Courage, Thugs, Cordellia, Three Pistols... so many excellent tracks.
Thanks for sharing Canada's pride and joy the Hip, as a Canadian myself I can't fully trust fellow Canadians that don't like the Hip. The Tragically Hip is in our blood. In Gord We Trust
Polo, I have been a sub since very early early on. I have also been a Hip fan since the 80's. This makes me happy to see you watching and listening to TTH. I would like to recommend my favourite Hip song, Fight.
My fav Hip song. My next tattoo is “that’s where that way will” love his poetry and will die with the hip my fav band. For those who never seen the hip in concert I feel sorry for you.
I would go as far as to say that The Hip are culturally significant for Canadians. Going with that theme but also completely different you should check out Northwest Passage by Stan Rogers, if ever there was a song that was a contender for a replacement national anthem, that would be it.
Can’t beat the Tragically Hip! They burrow in your bones, excavate Canadian history and culture! You will never find another equivalent that represents their “country/nationality”!
Tragically Hip was Canada's band. Limited success outside Canada but they were HUGE here. When the singer was diagnosed with brain cancer they did tour across the country (against Drs advice). They finished off in their home town of Kingston Ontario. The Prime Minister was there. It was broadcast across the country with local parties all over watching. Wasn't their best performance given his illness but it was amazing and heartbreaking at the same time. Gord died about a year or so later. He was one of the best front men of all time.
And this was filmed in Oshawa Ontario at Parkwood Estate. Location of Bill Madison (Adam Sandler), X-MEN, Nightmare Alley, Ready or Not and probably 50 plus other movies/TV shows.
Some context here... That final show that was broadcast across the country literally was watched by basically one of every three Canadians. Also, The Tragically Hip have sold more albums in Canada than U2 or Madonna
you made a very true statement about millions of people liking something your not into. Many of the Baby Boomer generation that grew up on this classic rock are not Rap fans. You clearly love it and it does something for you. Nice you can appreciate all these different styles of music
Look up the Hips last concert in their hometown, powerful as Gord (singer) was battling brain cancer but just gave it all. When we say Canadian band, to put in context a big chunk of the country shut down to watch that concert. Gord was a poet, RIP Gord
This song took time to grow on me, but man has it ever! It came out in 2002, and I think a lot of us Hip fans were waiting for another banger like New Orleans is Sinking, or Ahead By a Century. This album, In Violet Light, didn't have those so it's under appreciated, but musically it's actually incredible. Holds up beautifully 22 years later.
Doesn’t hold a candle, but if you want to explore a couple Canadian bands of this era check out Blue Rodeo, The Watchmen, Our Lady Peace. Some absolute hidden gems. Don’t sleep on 90’s Canadian rock 🤌🏻
"...in the forget yer skates dream, full of countervailing woes..." RIP Gord Downey. Quintessential Canadian lyrics may help explain why the Hip weren't as popular worldwide as they were to us Canucks. Slices of 80s-00s Canadian life in every single song perhaps don't resonate quite as heavily to others. "...Let's get friendship right...." Still so true, Gord, still so true.
When the colour of the night And all the smoke for one life Gives way to shaky movements Improvisational skills A forest of whispering speakers Let's swear that we will Get with the times In a current health to stay Let's get friendship right Get life day-to-day In the forget-your-skates dream Full of countervailing woes It's diverse as ever scenes Proceeding on a need-to-know In a face so full of meaning As to almost make it glow For a good life We just might have to weaken And find somewhere to go (Go somewhere we're needed) Find somewhere to grow (Go somewhere we're needed) When the colour of the night And all the smoke in one life Gives way to shaky movements And improvisational skills In a forest of whispering speakers Let's swear that we will Get with the times In a current health to stay And let's get friendship right Get life day-to-day In the forget-your-skates dream Full of countervailing woes As diverse as ever scenes Proceeding on a need-to-know In a face so full of meaning As to almost make it glow For a good life We just might have to weaken And find somewhere to go (Go somewhere we're needed) Find somewhere to grow (Go somewhere we're needed) Find somewhere to go (Let's go somewhere we're needed) Find somewhere to grow (Go where we are needed) 'Cause in the forget-your-skates dream You can hang your head in woe And as diverse as ever scene And know which way to go
Hey Polo, love your channel on RU-vid.! Check out New Orleans is Sinking by the Hip & Locked in the Trunk of a Car. I think you'll love both & the latter is based on a true story as follows: In 1970, the terrorist organization Freedom Liberation Quebec (FLC) kidnapped the provincial deputy premier, Pierre Laporte, executed him and his body was found later in the trunk of a car. All of Canada, was put under marshal law with a curfew for about a month by Pierre Trudeau even though the threat was clearly only in Quebec. This song ties that event to archeology of a Native American who had been murdered by the Spanish. Great song, as with all hip songs, it could have used another verse as Gord's imagery and words are so unique and deeply missed in popular music.
This video was also filmed in Oshawa Ontario an hr outside of Toronto @ the founder of GM's house (R.S. McLaughlin) which can also be seen in X-Men and Billy Madison. Thanks for showcasing the Hip a band woven into the fabric of Canadian culture. Very common to hear in cottage country beer in hand fire in foreground and lake in background.
Gord was a compelling performer, check out some live performances if get a chance, a poet rocker backed by fantastic musicians. This is a pretty mellow song for the Hip, they have a ton of true rock songs, from the '80s through the '10s.
Love this! Have partied with the Hip many times back in the day. I have one tattoo on my body and it's the title of this song "It's a good life if you don't weaken". I'm so glad you found the HIP, check out Road Apples, probably my fav album. Cheers
❤❤❤❤❤. ..listen to You Are Ahead by A Century.....pure art. I heard it was about his relationship with his brother. It's a Good Life if You Don't Weaken is def a masterpiece. It is based on a graphic novel Gord read yrs ago....he loved to read and it shows up in his work. I find this song is so relevant to today. Also the band was incredible in the way they were able to mix the poetry and music together.
I’ve been listening to a Neil Peart audiobook…and he describes loving Tragically Hip allot…enough to approach their manager with the offer to open for Rush on a big upcoming American tour. It might have opened up the sought-after American market to them. Their manager turned it down, saying that they were beginning to break a bit in Europe and wanted to follow that. Might have been a big mistake. They’re a known band, but perhaps they could have been huge. Who knows.
you can be an honourary canuck for sure! 🙂😀 i would also like to thank susan for this pick. it is beautiful and mesmerizing, like so many hip songs. they all take me back to great times. also, when i heard the name "susan" the first thing i thought of was the live version of "nautical disaster". 😉🙂
