The train pulling into Pietermaritzburg station brought back a wave of memories, The 1st time i went on a train I was 4 or 5 yrs old - 50years ago. My family lived in Pietermaritzburg at the time & we were going to cape town to visit my mother's parents. The train was the Orange Express. I clearly recall standing on the very same platform watching the train pulling in from Durban. The electric locomotives were a bit of a frightening sight, towering above me - and the noise. I was too small to get up the stairs into the coach, so my father simply lifted me and put me into our compartment thru the window. The train departed around 6.10pm - and i set about exploring - thru the kitchen coach, the dining car, the lounge car - all the way up to the locomotives pulling the train. To have those days back !!

Do you know what is sad. When the ANC took over control of South Africa from the National Party government in 1994 South Africa had a perfectly working railway system, both freight and passenger. Today hardly any trains run. I moved from KZN to the Western Cape in 2000 and remember the Shosholaza Meyl from Cape Town to Durban was still running, nothing today.I would love to go by train from Cape Town to Durban just for the fun of it.

The last time I was on such a train we were zooming up and out of Durbs, I hope they restore things back to normal soon, was good to see footage again.

In the dining car on this train, in 1992, the other diner at my table was a pastor from Durban earning extra money by buying cars in Johannesburg, where the drier weather didn't cause the rust the cars in Durban were prone to, and selling them there, rust-free. Greetings from Australia 🇦🇺

Thank you for sharing, it would be great to see a regular passenger and goods train service return. Imagine how many jobs it would create not only on the trains themselves with catering, hospitality, security, cleaning staff etc but also along each and every route. From personnel at stations, crew to keep tracks and other facilities in good repair, clean up crew along the route and on stations with some pride returned again. There was an era when the SA Railways had their own nurseries to supply plants to stations to create prize winning gardens and beautiful plant displays on city stations. Plenty job opportunities await and a huge injection into our economy

Since when does a mainline train have to stop for a container train?When it was SAR,the mainline passenger train had preference.What a mess Spoornet has become.

Longest Railway Tunnels in SA (and Southern Hemisphere) - Gauteng, the Gautrain Tunnel, 15,5km, then Western Cape Hexton tunnel no. 4 = 13,5km. Namibia is supposed to be building a 17km tunnel between Aus and Aus Nek to go under the sand dunes.

24 hours for 560km set up for failure, this train to be successful needs to leave point A at 6pm and arrive at point B before 7am, the 84\85 cyclone did not stop this train the main line was blocked and the train went up the steep old main line via Pinetown and it still got to Joburg, thank you for the upload it has shows how broken railway network looks like.

This was one of the nicest Trains to travel on and like everything else the ANC Government ruined it our Railway became a haven for thugs n vandals shocking shame on them disgusting

That view is stunning. Are these locomotives hybrid? IE, they can run on electricity and/or Diesel just in case somebody steals the power lines to electrify his house or sell them as scrap metal?

It's too bad that absolutely everything you look at in South Africa has fallen into disrepair over the past thirty years. This creaking groaning antique - don't try to get a night's sleep on it - that's for sure.

Even in the dark one noticed the vegetation metres high next to the tracks. This was never seen before this useless anc came into power and destroyed everything they touched.
