I love all these episodes but perhaps being a former New Jersey citizen for 50+ years I learned so much about Inness from this particular episode to the point that my daughter and I were sooo fortunate to visit a special exhibition of his works at the Montclair Art Museum... Thank you David for making us artists and non artists see that transcendent light of discovery.... one dot, swipe or brush stroke at a time.. 🤩

You are phenomenally good at describing these artists I love. Turner, Whistler, & Inness. George Inness is in my top 10 landscape artists. I’m an aspiring Tonalist painter who lives in the Hudson-Mohawk Rivers Valley. I feel like I’m getting mini art history lessons, along with practical demonstrations, that honestly, are so informative & helpful to me, I can’t tell you how appreciative I am for these. Thank you!!

Great Presentation! Thank you! That was just the greatest art lesson I have ever heard. I will be tuning in and playing with some of the lessons ideas into my work. Funny - I kind of feel like I am cheating when I use a rag and overpaint a hundred times on my abstracts. I go in blind just pushing color, shape and contrast. I guess I am in good company. I will be playing with the soft edges more!

@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt

Hi, Dan! Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us - it means so much to us to hear from you. I am referring to creating a design that will keep the mind's eye roving around in the picture plane and not slipping outside the picture at the corners - or any other area. Sometimes a corner might have more detail or a darker area. All the best, Connie and David

Selfo is not a word and natural talent fails to describe someone who has gone to the effort of teaching themselves method and theory.

Fascinating program and way beyond the one sentence description from a college instructor that said Inness was trying to show spiritualism in his paintings. That may be true but is too simplistic.

I have a question David. Do you buy the panels ready prepared by an art shop…….or do you paint straight on to a factory fresh piece of Dibond aluminium??? In other words…..can we paint straight on to Dibond from the aluminium factory outlets , or, do we need to prime the surface in some way (factory pieces are much cheaper than the art shops).
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt
@DavidDunlopSimmonsArt 10 месяцев назад
HI, dulcieogilviw5786 - Thank you for watching our program and for writing to us. I paint directly on composite sheet aluminium, like Dibond, Compbond, or Omegabond, comprising two 0.3 mm thick aluminium cover layers and a polyethylene or mineral core, and on the raw aluminum that I buy from the hardware store. I cut my - wearing gloves - but you can also ask the shop to cut it for you. You can search those terms and find the material. I believe that certain online artstores may now carry it. Good luck with your painting! Kind regards, David and Connie

As an experienced painter, I find this manner of working to be quite unpleasant and dissatisfying. It is far too random, uncontrolled, and leaves very raw semi-impasto strokes that will ultimately create amateurish glare in a finished painting. These quick wipes and daubs seem to strive for immediate gratification, as if good painting is really so easy. Certainly not my cup of tea, although I am a huge admirer of George Inness.
