Welcome to my daily coverage of the 2023 Transcontinental Race. The Transcontinental Race is a self supported bikepacking race across Europe. Riders have to plan their own route between a series of set parcour and checkpoints. The 2023 edition of The Transcontinental race is the 9th running of the event and begins in Geeradsbergen in Belgium and finishes in Thessaloniki in Greece.
The 2022 edition of the event was won by Christof Strasser who returns to defend his title. The fastest woman in 2022 was Fiona Kolbinger who also won the event overall in 2019. Other previous winner are Kristof Allergaert (2013, 2014, 2016) , James Hayden (2017 & 2018) and some guy called Josh in 2015.
A huge thank you to HOLYFAT for their support of my Transcontinental Race updates, check out their website here:

Love your updates Josh. Thanks. Much easier sitting in front of my computer watching than out there pedaling. But would rather be doing if I had the capacity!😂😂

Great to hear about your supported version of the Gran guanche! Thought about doing it as a solo bikepacking adventure, but decided against it as I'm just not as robust as I used to be, and my Spanish is just a few words, so no good if i had a problem to get help with. Will check it out😊😊😊😎😎😎🚴‍♀🚴‍♀🚴‍♀🚴‍♀🏝🏝🏖☕🍰

Really enjoying your updates Josh. Just out of interest, what is the age of the oldest competitor this year?

Josh, do you have any idea why both Strasser and Gemperle decided to turn back after doing parcours IVc and go via Trikala/Larissa? The route you plotted, continuing northwest after the end of IVc, looked like a much better and shorter way of reaching the final parcours, and the road there from Vlachava through Skepari is tarmac all the way…

The difference in elevation + supply in the cities could be the answer. The shorter (about 50km) route has about +2000m of elevation. I would like to see an analysis as well.

To work Josh, this has been really insightful, great coverage round ups. Question though what do you do for a bike lock? I’d never leave my bike in the city and to the most part when out in the country if I’ve needed to stop I’ve had friends with me.

I tend not to carry a lock on these kind of events but never leave the bike put of sight. For touring I'd carry a light lock.. but again usually avoid leaving the bike out of sight

I always wonder about hygiene. How do the riders wash themselves and how much spare trikots do they have with them? Sure you stink, but 10 days without a shower or new clothes.... hmm...

Many of the riders sleep some or many of their nights in hotels when possible. Christopher Strasser actually said in last lost dot podcast that he also does this for hygiene reasons, mainly to prevent infections (at the sitting area).

I used two pairs of shorts, washing one pair everyday, be it in hotel or a cafe washroom. Hung out to dry on my saddle pack in the sun which also sterilises the pad! Coupled with chamois cream (happy bottom) and sudocreme overnight. Two TCR’s and no saddle sores, a winning formula for me!
