The Trap Orb 😍 is a 12-sided LED Infinity Dodecahedron 💠 that reacts to music 🎶 and requires assembly 👩‍🏭🧰 100% made by you. Inspired by 2020 quarantine stay-at-home antics.
Where to purchase the kit: etsy.me/3p0qxx5
Other items you'll need:
- Super glue (I used two 2g tubes of Elmer’s Krazy Glue)
- Soldering kit; specifically: soldering iron, solder, holder, sponge, 22awg wire, wire cutter, wire snips, tweezers (I used www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07...)
- Blue painter’s tape
- Acetone/window cleaner/microfiber cloth (for cleanup)

Can I use a higher density RGB LED strip without having to modify anything, that is, still be able to use the same controller/driver?
@thetraporb
@thetraporb Год назад
Yes - check the reviews on the etsy listing to see a review (including photo) from a previous customer who used a higher density 144led/m strip!

One more question... do you apply the superglue before or after the glass is slid into the white sleeve. I noticed that it is critcal to have it placed exactly so that the sleeve will fit nicely into the groove of the adjacent panel. If you don't get it quite right it doesn't match up very well.
@thetraporb
@thetraporb 3 года назад
I suppose it doesn't really matter but I think I would apply the glue into the crevices and then slide the plexi into it, to avoid any chance of having any glue residue be visible. And yes, you will have to place it exactly because it'll be hard to move once set. Practice it a few times before actually gluing!

@@thetraporb Once I get the new edge pieces that fit correctly it should be alot easier. I think some of my plexiglass panels were not able to slide all the way down into the slot which made the base a bit wider than it should be. I stopped assembling the dodecahedron when I realised my connections were not exact.

There is a blue protective film on one side of the pentagon and a clear film on the other. Does it make any difference which side should face the inside of the dodecahedron?
@thetraporb
@thetraporb 3 года назад
No difference!

@@thetraporb Great, that's what I thought by looking through it from both directions. By the way your instructions are great. I am half through.
@JeredDanielson
@JeredDanielson 2 года назад
@@thetraporb Actually, it does matter. 2-way mirrored acrylic only has the mirror coating on one side. You want that side facing inwards towards the LEDs, it gives a better optical effect AND prevents the coating from being damaged by handling. Usually, the blue film is stuck to the mirror coated surface, so you'd want the "blue side in".

Do you have replacement plastic edge pieces as all but 9 of mine are defective. The slot on one side is slightly narrower than the other side and does not allow the mirror to fully engage to the bottom of the slot. In order to get the mirror to fit it takes 10 minutes of careful sanding with a nail file to get the slot wide enough for the mirror.
@thetraporb
@thetraporb 3 года назад
Hi John, unfortunately some of the pieces that were shipped earlier had a manufacturing defect that causes this (the issue has since been fixed). You can take a small knife or drill bit (3/32") and scrape/score the insides of the edge pieces in order to slightly widen the slots, or I can send you some replacements if you are not comfortable with it
@johnrflinn
@johnrflinn 3 года назад
@@thetraporb Thanks, it would save me a whole lot of time if I could get 15 normal and 1 notched replacement for the plastic edge pieces. I was able to salvage 9 normal edges by sanding with a nail file. Do you still have my address?

Where in the world did you source your acrylic mirror from? At that size, I'd expect the mirrors alone to cost around 500 from what I've been quoted on sheets from plastic suppliers.

How does the wiring in the forked section work? Can you spilt a DO to two DIN?
@thetraporb
@thetraporb 2 года назад
Yup! Just solder a wire from the DO to each DIN in the fork

Very cool mad props about to order mine im an 8 out of 10 at soldering so this should be cake. Also, I have one of the vats that heats up and you can simply dip the pieces of wire in the vat which will really speed this up to get the solder on the little tip of each wire My question is total time range. What do you think for an expert level to assemble this and somebody that barely has enough skill to comprehend your video? What type of total time do you think it takes?
@thetraporb
@thetraporb Год назад
Very cool - never heard of that but if it works well I’d imagine it cut out a lot of the work. As for total time to assemble, that varies based on how diligent and experienced you are but I’ve heard anywhere from about 20 hours on the slow end to about half of that

great job. but damn the wiring part really got me lost, especially after the base. how do you get it to the other faces if you soldiered the base with LEDs?
@wowwitsgau
@wowwitsgau 3 года назад
After you have the base wired up, connect the next layer of face pieces (5 faces total). Then wire that up with LEDs. After that, do the next layer (5 faces again). Lastly, place and wire the final face piece. See time stamp of video after 10:00 for more details

Unfortunately, due to the fragile nature of the orb as well as the time required for assembly, it is only offered as a DIY kit. However, we see this as a win-win; by doing it yourself, you get to learn new skills and brag that you made it yourself!

Don't solder over your mirrors. Solder leaves holes in tint.

I recommend you NOT use the glass as a surface to work on. It is very annoying if you scratch it.
