I build a #NAS out of a recycled old #Dell #Optiplex #pc machine and a bunch of hard drives that would otherwise be trash.

replace the wifi card with a mSata 128/256gb card for FreeNAS OS, then use one ssd as cache drive, and the rest of ur drives for storage

I love this! My NAS is an HP 6005 Pro SFF that I got for £7.50 in a Hard off in Tokyo

I see Motocross Madness on the bench. I remember that game being ahead of its time, especially with the freestyle sidewinder remote. Good times!

Keep checking that bin and dig to the bottom to make sure you save whatever has a chance of working

Love the ghetto build! I would go with unraid only just because you use different capacity drives. Yes i know it's paid software, but if it works on this config it's gonna make your life easier.

Thanks for the tip! We shall embrace the jank! I'm going to migrate the data from the spanned NTFS volumes onto one large drive and take it from there. Part 2 will be up next weekend.

Missed the premier by like 20 seconds. I have truly lost my way... May light-stick guide me back to the proper path.

I believe open media vault allows drives of different sizes to be used in raid type configurations

Oh my, this is great. I would probably run TrueNAS Scale or if you really want the themed journey, a bare metal Debian server image with mdadm and Samba.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into it today. I was leaning towards TrueNAS already.

Maybe you should go for the M.2 adapter which gives you a PCIe riser instead of a vertical slot?

Yeah, I mentioned that. I was using only parts I had laying around.

Are you going to set up RAID on your NAS? TrueNAS requires arrays to be built from the same size drives. Unraid requires you use the largest drive in a set as the parity drive. Couple of limitation you might have to work around. If you can live without RAID, then any OS should allow you to set up a JBOD. If you go JBOD, have a good backup strategy, just in case... :) To be fair, even with a RAID setup, you still need backup. But, with JBOD...you are really walking a tightrope without a net.

Thanks for the advice, Yeah it will likely be Raid 4 if I can find 1 more 4TB HDD. The drives featured in the video are going to scrap. They all failed a basic surface test to various degrees. This was somewhat expected since they were recently hauled half way across the country in a trailer.

@@50shadesofbeige88 I really like TrueNAS. With just 3 (or more) 4TB drives, you can put together a nice little "shelf" of drives. TrueNAS also supports VMs, Containers, and probably things I don't even realize it has... :) You can also use your smaller SATA drives as cache drives. When I look at what you are doing, it kind of screams to me: Dremel the bottom away from the case, secure in a wood crate/cabinet/box, and build you NAS as an art/retro/rustic system.

Thermal paste should be replaced every 3 to 5 years for that exact reason, it wasnt on dell; the computer just wasnt maintained.
@50shadesofbeige88
@50shadesofbeige88 3 месяца назад
I disagree. I have had thermal paste last in excess of 5 years. All the *Optiplex machines I have, even one with 12th gen i7 were dry.
@50shadesofbeige88
@50shadesofbeige88 3 месяца назад
I understand that 3-5 years is a good general rule of thumb, I'm just saying that regardless of age, I've had experiences with Dell machines and bone dry thermal paste. There's no hard fast rule that says the paste must be replaced at a particular age. If it isn't broken don't fix it.
