The first time I visited Europe (as a teenager, half a century ago), my little room at a B&B in England felt like a cave: it had been wallpapered so many times there were no corners or edges anywhere. Everything was rounded at wall and ceiling joins. I remember wishing I had X-ray eyes to see through it all!

What a treat to see all these treasures. Thank you for sharing, and making such an interesting video. Europeans who emigrated to Canada created farms and tools just like home. My grandparents farm looked just like this, in the end. No one to appreciate all the treasures, at that time - so sad. You are doing a wonderful service to history and showing how much has been lost in disrespecting our past.

I am an archaeologist and have worked at sites from the 1800s here in the States. Lovely to see you document with such precision and care! If you are ever removing grass/topsoil and find a well-defined, square area of darkened earth, that’s likely an old privy (outhouse) site. Lots of treasures and information in there for us…maybe not for everyone else 😅. Keep up the great work!

I always suggest that you live in a home for a year before changing the landscaping. You never know what will pop up! Clearing and trimming all the trees and bushes is necessary not only for access but it helps the plants too. But you know that. What interesting things you've done uncovered. I'm sure you'll find something very interesting to do with those iron fence pieces. Maybe a base for flowering vines or tomatoes? Anyway, lots of work but very worthwhile.

The best way to stake plants: forage in the woods for recently fallen mid-sized -2 cms diameter - branches (best in my experience are beech) then plant them in the soil to form an X on which your low hanging branches rest, cut to proper height. It is invisible, free and does work very well. That is the way I stake my tall collapsing perennials.

Thanks for taking us with you on this amazing, adventurous discovery-tour, Benita! I watched this video with tears in my eyes because I felt deeply moved and touched. How blessed you are to see the beauty in all these items, plants, inscriptions and all the other traces of the past! They ARE REAL treasures and you understand and honor their very special, important value. How wonderful that you document, preserve, restore and implement all these things! Your house surely sighs up in relief that its history, its soul, its little secrets and the lives that were lived in it are not just „erased by renovation“ but respected and treasured so lovingly! Well done Benita, well done - I‘m impressed in each and every possible way 👍🥹👍 Love from Germany

Ah, the lovely table! I’m pretty sure it’s an old card table. We have a similar one, with a hinged table top. It’s folded out when used for cards (or more likely, fika 💕), and doubled up when used as a narrow wall-hugging table. Our table top pieces were badly bent over the years, so we use it with only one piece, just like you are. The top is rotated 90 degrees when folded out, using the plug-like mechanism. That way it’s more sturdy than just folding it out onto the extra leg.

This is by far my favorite video of yours! It's wonderful to see you honor the history of the house and those who came before you and I felt like I was right beside you making the discoveries! Here in the US it seems like most people want new and manicured things - I was raised differently and am so happy I now have a 1952 (positively ancient haha) cottage that retains some of the original features. I love the tools and hardware odds and ends you found - I have some things like that from my grandpa and going back I'm sure to earlier generations too. I love that you're adding your own info to the history and what a treasure the wallpaper archive is! How exciting! Your wallpaper experience reminded me of a 1858 artisan’s house I used to live in. (UK) The hallway had 14 layers of wallpaper dating back to the original Victorian which was a rich grey, blue and red, gothic window design. I didn’t think to save pieces though. It also reminded me of a TV programme about the National Trust restoring Paul McCartney’s childhood home in Liverpool. His mother liked to buy roll ends of wallpaper because it was a cheaper, which meant they had a different pattern on each wall in the lounge, some of which the Trust have had to recreate from scratch. Luckily, his brother had lots of photos of the Beatles practising, so were able to be accurate with the patterns. I’m looking forward to the next instalment.❤

I love the kitty paw prints! So sweet. Good luck with the loom when you get around to it. You've discovered so many interesting things in your summer house. When we moved into our house 40 years ago, we found a locked metal box in the rafters of the basement. Did it hold money? A gun? Stock certificates? No. It held two pieces of adult material from the 50s. A centerfold of a naked lass and a comic showing the effects of putting Spanish Fly into the office water cooler. LOL What a disappointment!

Benita this is a fascinating glimpse of ordinary people's lives so long ago. I wonder if they ever dreamt that many years in the future a curious and respectful woman would see the treasure in their day to day lives. Thank you for sharing this with us Benita.

Love this. 💗 We’ve found a range of items in the garden of our old Czech farmhouse, including neolithic pottery shards (as per archaeologist neighbor) & and a rusted bayonet. Gives me enormous perspective & keeps me humble about my moment on the land as I plow up the potatoes.

It was a great journey throughout the history of Mary. So many informative details, timestamps and artifacts. The building is blessed to have so attentive and caring owners. Thank you for documenting and sharing the stories. If my childhood memories do not mislead, the berry bush might be blackcurrant.

Thank you for taking us along on your treasure hunt. Neolithic times? Oh my. The oldest things my family has found were arrowheads. My step-dad and I brought them home in the 1960’s after a wooded area had been cleared for building a new apartment complex. Eventually mom got tired of moving our treasure off the window sill and she threw them away. 😢 So far as we could find out, that area hadn’t been cleared before. In the 1830’s there was a Federal Indian Removal Act made in Cincinnati. Shamefully, many Ohio tribes were “in the way” and put on river boats and “given land” in what is now Kansas and Oklahoma. Tribes included the Seneca, Ottawa and Wyandot tribes who were farmers. Not the “wild Indians of the Western states”. I was learning about these people in school when we found our treasures. Seeing you hold the axe head reminded me of the way I felt touching and holding our relatively young artifacts. I hope you find it is truly an ancient artifact. Thank you for reminding me of those treasures. I’m only sorry that our lands were taken by force. But I still wish those arrowheads were here or in a museum instead of some early landfill.
