People are always underestimating plants especially trees, you know they see them as these static things on the landscape that pump out some oxygen for breathing, but trees have their own interesting and exciting lives, it just takes place on a different time scale. To a tree a forest is a highly competitive and overcrowded place, especially in a rainforest where trees grow so close together they form a thick canopy that blocks most light from penetrating to the forest floor, where most seedling trees start out. Shaded and stuck in the dark, only a lucky few will grow into Giants, relying on old trees falling over and forming a light gap, where a young tree has to fight for its spot in the rainforest skyline. All this hard competition can drive a tree to resort to violence to try and steal a spot in the canopy, and for a few plants in the genus Ficus, that is exactly what happens...

WHAT is this fig being a million flowers. That is bananas! That expression needs to be "that is figs" because figs are way stranger than bananas. And strangler figs!? Wow, two new mind-blowing facts in one video. Keep this set of facts in your back pocket for the next time someone says that plants are boring. Thanks for sharing, JJ!

Strangler figs are such incredible plants, probably one of my favorite trees. The size they can attain is unbelievable, and I find their competitive strategy to be fascinating. You explained it all really well, great work as always JJ! - Harrison and Evan

In Costa Rica did tou ever get the chance to climb up inside one? I have to say that was one of the craziest experiences I have ever done was climbing 40 or so feet up into a tree and then pop out in the canopy, such amazing plants. -JJ

We got to explore the root system of one, but not climb it.

Yeah strangler figs are an very interesting plant, I do hope to continue talking about plants because they are often forgotten about because their behavior happens on a different timescale. Definitely need to talk orchids and mistletoe one of these days. -JJ

It's interesting to think that trees are violent too, competition is high. Thanks, I learned a lot. 👍

Yeah thinking about how plants have all these behaviors we have trouble observing because it happens at a different timescale is really neat.

Hey man, great video. I love it. I'm doing a presentation about three different plants, and the Ficus is one of them.

Plants don't get enough credit! And wasps only get more incredible the more I learn about them.

Yes wasps are just out of this world half the time. I am enjoying trying to make some videos about plants, as they just fade into the background in our minds half the time,. hopefully a plant like the strangler fig illustrates that is not the case JJ

Sorry, I didn’t mean to be negative. Your voice sounds young and perhaps I was harsh. Your intonation flat and monotone. Almost painful to listen to. Seek professional advice or study up on public speaking and narration. You can make it great quickly I suggest. Wishing you the best.
