Matty, I know this video is older, and I’ve watched it already. Just popped up again on my “recommended”. You influenced me to pick up the R9 earlier this year…it is such a great bike…a bit spendy but worth every penny! I grew up in Colorado, wish I lived there now as an adult cyclist…so many great places to ride!

I think your suspension just needs to be tuned to resolve your issues. It might need more or less air to fit you perfectly.

Definitely as mentioned - check settings on your fork. I'd even call FOX tech support and tell them what you're experiencing. After that - experiment with swapping out your 45mm long stem to a 60mm length to extend your weight bias slightly forward. Combined, this will plant the front end better.

I just picked up the 9 a couple of weeks ago and finally got the fit and suspension dialed in. The fork comes stock with 4 volume spacers which was entirely too much for me since I’m a smaller rider. I watched the video from Kyle & April’s channel regarding how to set up rebound on the fork and it’s working out really really well, I recommend checking that out to help. I also have been considering swapping out the tires because I have the same feeling about the rolling resistance, might try putting higher psi and see how it runs before swapping them out. Keep up the awesome content!
@MikeOn2Wheels
@MikeOn2Wheels 2 года назад
On my hardtail I always ran around 22-23psi front and 28-30 rear. I’m a little heavier than you are probably but I could tell a big difference in rolling resistance with changes of just 2psi on the climbs. A little more air in the rear tire, especially on a hardtail, helps prevent pinch flats or rim damage too IMO. I would say try bumping up the rear pressure some on your next ride and see if that helps it not feel like the tires are slowing you down. A few psi more will roll faster and you can adjust it some until you find a happy medium between rolling resistant and grip/comfort.

Been researching this bike for a while and am just about to make the purchase. I'm 56 and come from a road bike racing background, you've helped me make up my mind on this one. Also, great videos, I'm enjoying them immensely. I'm down in NM, maybe we can get together some time, I'd like to check out some of those trails with someone who knows them.

Great insight into this bike for the long review....the only upgrade I would look into for this bike and the trail specific riding you with this roscoe is clipless peddles 100%. I feel hardtails especially need them for controlling the back end and in rough terrain, unless your endro or DH riding!!

You can try to adjust the spacers so you can get your stem lower and closer to the headset. Or you can get a flatter handle bar with less rise as well. Both will get your weight over the front tire more so you can do better cornering and get good grip on climbs!
@mattj6676
@mattj6676 2 года назад
You'll get it set up the way you like it. Soft air pressure will make for more rolling resistance, you'll need to experiment on how to set your fork, there are three settings on that...the air pressure in the fork, the top setting for how much resistance you use in it (it looked like you were running it pretty wide open if my perspective was right) and most folks forget about the rebound, which is set on the bottom and regulates how quickly the shock bounces back to its resting point. I really like the new camera angles, production value!

Awesome vlog as always. The fork just needs some adjustments done to get it dialed. It’s actually a very good fork. As far as the tires go, I love the XR4s but the 2.6 might be where you’re getting the resistance. I have a 2021 Fuel and I put 2.4s on and they roll quick. Just my opinion.

True, the width probably makes the most difference. I run 2.4’s and it’s not too bad.

I am running those tires on my Marlin 7, they have tons of grip here in AZ desert terrain. I run 30 psi (tubeless), so she rolls faster and easier. Also, I don’t want to get a pinch flat on rocks or damage the rim.

With the 65 degree head angle and the short 43 cm chain stay length it keeps your weight more on the rear for a more playful bike. That combination doesn't make it great for steep climbs. That being said it's a great bike but I don't believe any bike can be perfect for everything that's why we have several lol. Thanks for sharing. Enjoy the ride

I just got a chameleon, coming from an old-geometry bike with 70deg. HA. Truthfully, the geometry is perfectly fine for steep climbs. If the hill is so steep that I can't get weight on the front end sitting, it's steep enough that I'd rather be standing anyway- and if I stand on the old bike, it's hard to keep rear-wheel traction.

I switch out the psi on my Roscoe 8 depending on the terrain. If it's smooth the psi goes up. I lower it a lot when over rough terrain to make up for the lack of rear suspension. And my Roscoe is running beefy Maxxis Rekons which are 2.8s.

Hey Matty, re the tyre's, I have the SE4's on my 21 Fuel EX8, and was surprised to hear you find them having a lot of rolling resistance. I will add though, that in the dry, in the sandy/gravely trails I have near me, they rock, and I SERIOUSLY like mine I have not changed to Maxis as I expected to do when I got the bike!. In the wet, they are utter pigs of things per my experience. While you state that it rained that day, you didn't look to be getting the tread full of mud, which mine did once in a more sandy/clay place I ride at - then I found them to be rolling death traps of things. Overall, I'd say that the SE4's are great in dry sandy / dirt trails (hard or loose), but they do have limitations in wet (which might be what you found)

Another great video. When you said 'I hope the camera isn't too shakey' I thought...hmmm, I wonder if the difference would be visually noticeable in a split screen video with a full-sus and a hardtail. I'm just looking into MTB'ing and just soaking up any useful information I can grasp right now. So I'm yet to try either type of bike. Being that I'm in my late 40's, I'm thinking full-squish may be the way to go; despite the low financial risk tolerance. At the moment, the Polygon T8 seems appealing. Thanks for sharing your time. 🤝👊✌

People seem to overlook the handlebar and stem changes from the 8 to the 9. And thats fair because they are very subtle but i think it speaks to the design intent between the two. The 9 gets a higher rise bar and short reach stem. Those plus the fork (to me) point it more towards the the trail/jump scene. And i think the marketing content drives to that as well. The 8 is more towards the top all around trail. The 9 gives me old specialized P bike vibes.

I don’t shred like you, but I like off rode riding with my wife, very much. I’m thinking that we could jump MTB for FAT TIRE bikes, for off road…as well as snow and sand. We live in SoCal, so beaches and snowy mountains are close by. I am “assuming” that a FAT bike, like the Farley, would allow for an “ALL TERRAIN” option, allowing us to skip from our Trek Dual Sports, that we LOVE for street and trail…and jump ahead to a FAT BIKE option. Your thoughts?

I've settled on 14 psi in the front and around 18 psi in the rear. I'm 160 pounds and ride the southern AZ chunk/dusty/loose-over-hard terrain. While the tires do get a bit bouncy at those pressures on the slower technical stuff here, the traction is much better plus I'm not bombing down trails at Mach 10 either. I still have the stock tires on my 9. In my extremely limited experience, they seem pretty average and have a fairly vague feel to them (particularly in loose, technical terrain when carrying speed), which might also partially account for the "not planted" feel of the front end? I'm curious if anyone else feels the same way with these tires. But, they do seem pretty durable for a lighter weight/casing tire and they feel nice overall. I did remove all the spacers and have my stem slammed (I'm a roadie - habit lol), and that's also helped with position/handling/feel of the bike, as well as cut down my new carbon bar to 750mm and might even go a bit more narrow, but will test on my stock bar first. I have a pair of Continental Argotal/Kryptotal tires ready to go on when I wear the stock tires out, which I think will really expand the capabilities. While the stock tires are draggy (especially at the pressures I run, but I don't care as I'm not exactly racing), if the bike was about 5 pounds lighter it would be a great climber/all around bike....but that would cost wayyyyy more money than the initial price of the bike.
