00:00:00 Introduction
00:01:25 The Trial for Murder
00:34:17 Credits, thanks and further listening
Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812-1870), one of the most famous and celebrated novelists of the Victorian era, created some of the most memorable characters in world literature. He completed 14 full-length novels, including 'Oliver Twist', 'Great Expectations', 'Bleak House', 'Little Dorrit' and the semi-autobiographical 'David Copperfield', five novellas (including 'A Christmas Carol') and hundreds of short stories and essays. Much of his work is notable for biting social commentary on the plight of the poor, and sharp satire lampooning the rich and powerful.
This story was first published uncredited (under the title 'To Be Taken With A Grain of Salt') as part of 'Doctor Marigold's Prescriptions' in the 1865 Christmas edition of Dickens' own periodical 'All the Year Round'. It has gone on to be much anthologised, and is probably Dickens's second best-known short ghost story, after 'The Signalman', which followed the next year in the 1866 Christmas number.
Note for returning listeners: long-time subscribers may have heard this story on the channel before (it was available 2019-2022). This is a new upload because the previous version contained several errors, the major one being that I'd somehow inadvertently deleted three long paragraphs (about 2-3 minutes of narrative) during the editing process! So here is the complete story...

Famished and partnered by parochial parasites. The writing prowess of some great authors truly surprises me. Some phrases go in so nonchaleantly(sp?) that one misses the real work that goes into writing stories well. I find it fascinating. Pardon me if I've made mistakes.

Many people think *Dickens* is a dark writer ... I think his story: *The Haunted Man & the Ghosts Bargain* is scary b/c of its language & repetition of that theme of *being haunted* . The ghost/s he writes about in *A Christmas Carol* are likewise & here in this tale too. *Dickens* himself was quiet the character if his bio is to be believed & I've no reason not to believe it. Thanks much *Simon*

Although I am saddened that I have only just found your channel, there is a bonus in my tardiness. There are so many stories to listen to! I have started listening to 1 story a night with my 3 year old while he falls asleep. And then one of the longer ones when it's time for me to sleep. When I run out I will find the ones I missed the end to ! You are extremely talented, have a beautiful voice and I love your taste of stories. I hope to be able to "buy you a coffee" or two someday.

Brilliant. Dickens doesn't pander to an unlearned audience. Most of his speech is geared toward, what was in his day, a standard vocabulary. However, there are a few words that could cause readers to need to look them up. We were always taught not to cause your reader any reason to put your story down. Dickens wrote so well and on subject matter, that so captured his reader's attention and desire for intrigue and resolution, that he /she could do no less than come back to the story after the definition had been revealed. That, my friend's is excellent literature.
