I don’t think Kafka actually wrote that. He never finished most of his books before he died. They were finished by his friend who had his stuff published posthumously. I guess he had trouble concluding his work. That why most of his stories end so abruptly.

It's also about the way we put ourselves on trial. A guilt complex is like living in a totalitarian state - Its lawmen are everywhere, just like in the book, and the courts are "in every attic" - in the quiet places in your head where things are stored. And eventually, you convince yourself that you are guilty... and submit to death.

I absolutely agree with this. I just finished reading the book, and I honestly believe it's a valid interpretation to conclude that the whole trial was a paranoid delusion. Reminded me of American Psycho in a strange way.

I can say in all seriousness that this series reignited my love for literature - I downloaded a whole bunch of books and started reading again! Yo, Dr. Sweets, can I make a suggestion? Could you please review Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, Faust by Goethe, or 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami? That last one may not be the same caliber, but it's a lot of fun to read!

If it inspires people to read it then cool but master level would be explaining the book without many spoilers so a bit of that feeling of desperation from the first reading can be preserved tbqh But thanks of his way of telling it where he leaves so many blanks while telling the nutshell of the story he already kinda does make you want to understand it more in depth

From reading his "Letter to Father" (i don't know the English title), I got the feeling all his books, or at least the two that I have read (The Trial and Metamorphosis) are also about feeling hopeless, incapable of doing anything.

Yeah, Kafka straight predicted the nazis and shit, and Orwell stole a couple pages from him when he did his thing later. But wasn't Kafka really taking shots at religion? The Trial, The Castle, they both happen all around churches and religious symbols. The priest said it, even he's part of the jury. The Trial isn't just about a system that seems unfair. It's about being guilty, without even knowing why. And it's about Kafka's spiritual guilt, in front of judges who were everywhere, but he never got to face to hear what he did wrong.

My reading on the church in The Trial is that it's a metaphor for how these kinds of totalitarian bureaucracies often to collude with, co-opt, and deploy traditional religious values and devotion as a method of reinforcing control (alongside other methods). In this manner, organised religion becomes a tool for societal control and institutional oppression, at least as much if not more so than as a cultural centre of religious faith.

I wouldn't take it as a religious metaphor, considering Kafka was from Prague. Religion was not such a big theme and churches powers were limited. Jews back then were not discriminated here because of their religion, but because they were usually German (or Yiddish) speaking and Czech speaking people hated them for that. In Czech history, religion was often used just as a tool of power with reigning dynasties changing the official religion back and forth. This is what I see as the reason for making religious figures part of the depersonalised, all encompassing bureaucratic regime in his books.

Basically he had a tough relationship with his father, who punished him severely without any logical reason. In this work Jozef is a reflection of himself of Kafka. In this book Josef didn't do anything wrong , but he is arrested. It reflects his life and experiences he had in his real life.

To me The Trial is not about totalitarianism of government. Its about the human condition of guilt. The main character tries to cure his "guilt" by 4 ways. 1. to rid his guilt by love (sex) 2. to rid his guilt by beauty (art) 3. to rid his guilt by wealth (money) 4. to rid his guilt by faith (religion) in the end he cant rid himself of guilt cause he realizes its part of the human condition (just like a dog cant stop being a dog), so he commits suicide. All the other characters are just his imagination.

I just read the book and never felt K. having a sense of guilt. It was more like helplessness and not wanting to trust the system which is akin to existentialist concepts presented by an oppressive class who retaliate as just doing their job. Would be interested if you enlightened me as to why you think it about the condition of guilt?

Here in Russia we've got a saying: "Мы рождены, чтобы Кафку сделать былью," - which translates to: "We were born to turn Kafka's fiction into reality". From my experience, that also applies to "1984" and the "Brave New World" among other things.

In germany it is still a pretty bad system though. We have Hartz IV which is meant to help people without employment and people who are not able to work. It is a veeeery complicated system which is very frustrating to go through and if you do anything wrong, forget to send a form in or don't obey the insanely stupid guidelines which are only there to beautify statistics (I'm not even kidding, look it up) you could even lose 100% of your financial resources (which is illegal since a few weeks because it isn't compatible with basic human rights). And then everybody is wondering why there are so many homeless people.

The impression I got after reading The Trial was that it took place in less a dystopian/totalitarian world, and more of a "spending the afternoon in a government administration building" world. It was a mind-numbing, incoherent, badly-organized place where only the insiders flourished and everyone else got bent over. Even. So. Slowly. Because heaven forbid that the bureaucrats do anything quickly.

Candide is just Voltaire misinterpreting Liebniz's phrase that ''this is the best of all possible worlds''. Voltaire seems to think that by Leibniz saying this, he meant that everything in the world was peachy, fine and dandy, and that even torture was a beautiful thing! What Leibniz actually meant was something more along the lines of ''unfortunately enough this is the best of all possible worlds'' Basically meaning that the world is a dark place but it's not getting any better or any worse. I can't believe just how badly this phrase has been misinterpreted by everyone.

This series absolutely planted an interest in literature in me. I've NEVER been one to enjoy reading. I could absolutely list every book I've read in school on both hands, no problem. I read what was required of me in school, hated it, and got through it. Somehow I stumbled on the episode for The Heart of Darkness and laughed my ass off so I decided to give reading it a shot, and absolutely loved it. That was maybe a month ago and since then I've read To Kill a Mockingbird, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and Lord of the Flies. I've got No Country for Old Men or Metro 2033 queued up next. Thanks Sparky.

This was amazing. Very funny, and a very well done analysis of this book, one of the most intelligent stories of all time, in my opinion. But if I could make a sugestion, I would say that the fable told by the priest to K. was very important to the meaning of the story. Maybe you could do another video using the same idea used on the Great Inquisitor and The Dark Knight video of this channel, but about that fable. In my opinion, is a very important idea, that people could really benefit from. Thank you Wisecrack, for this amazing content. PEACE

I just finished the book last night and it was trippy and symbolic in so many ways, my mind is still popping. But this was the funniest and most colorful review of the saddest aspects of the book. I love this series. At first I feared Thug notes would be trite "blacksploitation" . But every episode gives genuine insight into an important piece of literature. I've had a real Professor who couldn't explain Kafka better then "Prof. Sparky" . Great work! Keep it up.
