LESSON PLAN:

The Triangle Factory Fire and how this tragedy sparked the Progressive Movement focuses on the causes and effects of the worst industrial accident in American history and how it led to Progressive Era to increase reforms in the workplaces. The episodes unpacks the dramatic events of the day and teaches how industrialization and urbanization led to reformers and muckrakers to demand change in American society. Ultimately, students are left to consider the role of government and the consequences of laissez-faire economics and how the 146 deaths at the Triangle Factory have influenced America today.
Like all History For Humans episodes, this teaches students in a way they understand and actually learn- through story and with visual supports for diverse learners.
For teachers and homeschool parents, I have resources that go with this lesson that include interactive notesheets, a quick quiz, and an extension lesson that has students act as "History Detectives" and determine who is most to blame for the fire and tragedy. They read a secondary source, gather evidence, distribute responsibility, explain their reasoning and then create unique progressive reforms to prevent future tragedies like the one at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory!
