This is SUCH a great tutorial, thanks! I'm just starting to learn to "see" and also how to move the pen and ink. Hearing your thought processes as you draw is super-helpful.
@@stephentraversart I try to watch your videos and have improved in some of the areas. However, your sketching/drawing skills are at the master level. When you shared your story how you started sketching that was really inspirational.
Thanks! Very helpful! I recently took a few local drawing classes and in a few of my sketches, I included cars. They came out decently but it was work and I was constantly trying to make the tires round (when viewed at an angle). I've done more since, each time a little easier; your hints will be used!
Thanks, Stephen. I think vehicles are my most challenging. I have never done a careful study, but do try to do quick sketches when having to sit in my car. I am never satisfied with the outcome. I may try a careful study when I have the time.
I just completed this in pen and ink. I’ve been doing all these exercises in pen and ink. Not turning out the way I want but it’s good practice as you said.
Try repeating the exercise straight away if you’re not happy with it. You build on your earlier observation and have a focus of how things need to be changed. 😀
When it comes to drawing from memory I actually find the rear view the easiest. It’s basically just a rounded trapezoid on two stubby rectangles. Meanwhile for the side view if I’m lucky I’ll end up drawing an extremely boxy 70s-style sedan. As soon as I try to approximate a more modern curved shape I end up with a messy blob that doesn’t look structurally sound. I think cars are irritating because they’re not so organic you can fudge them, but they’re not linear enough for standard perspective rules to be terribly helpful without reference.
Same with the boxy 60s & 70s cars, and misshapen blobs for anything more recent. I have to pretend I’ve never seen a car in life and observe every line, angle and shape. 😀
