I did something like that for a high school project over 30 years ago, using a Commodore Vic 20, a big spinning solenoid and a metal ball. You would enter the distance from the launcher to the target, the height the target was below or above the launcher, if you wanted to do an overhand or underhand shoot (ie. the direction it would rotate), and how high the ceiling was, (which it need to make sure it the ball would not hit the ceiling. It would calculate the initial velocity (ie. the spin rate), and the angle at which to release the ball (duration after the opto sensor was triggered). In the end, it did not work well because the decay time of magnetic field varied too much. I was trying to get the field to decay faster by sorting the solenoid leads right after removing power and it helped, but I wasn't experience enough at the time to release time to be accurately controlled. I like your release mechanism. Curious, if you use a metal ball, to do you think it will be more accurate since it's mass is less likely to be affected by variable in air movement.

Filling the glass about a third of the way with water would keep the ball from bouncing out.

Awesome build! I wonder if using a small wire scoop to fling the ball after it is released would help with repeatability. It would make up for any asymmetry or unpredictability in the release.
