Hiking Half Dome in the summer of 2020, August 26-30.
We drove up from Los Angeles mid-week and spent a couple days exploring Yosemite Valley, seeing all the touristy sights we don't normally see. We don't get to the valley all that often since most of the time we are in the backcountry. As it was during the pandemic, you had to make reservations to enter the park. During the week it almost felt like we had the park to ourselves. You could actually find good parking at all the major tourist sites/views. There was smoke in the air from the nearby fires. Views weren't the absolute best, but I was able to take some decent photos during our time. The smoke did clear a bit as the week went on.
We did Half Dome that Saturday. For us, it was a long day on the trail. It was about 13 hours on the trail. Our goal was to just be back before it got dark. We started around 5 AM and finished around 6 PM. We probably could've finished sooner, but I was struggling on the way down having some feet issues. Overall it was a great hike. You definitely need to train for the hike. Do some hill workouts or training hikes. Luckily, we were all in decent shape. It sure was a trip to remember.
