Price does the VA work for SSFIV and onward. Vanilla SFIV's announcer was different and the story there, from what I have heard from an interview (can't remember), is that Capcom had someone do the VA... and when the time came around for SSFIV, they could not find him back after his voice work was done. That SFIV announcer did had voice samples for Dee Jay and T.Hawk if you do data digging within the original SFIV audio data, which they didn't make the cut in vanilla SFIV. Eventually, those two character came through within SSFIV.
Have to thank super sf4 for teaching me how to play fighting games. I've been playing them since the snes but it was with sf4 where i actually sat down and taught myself how to play and not just mash buttons.
I rented SF4 in '09 when it came out and got my ass beat online. I had no idea what I was doing outside of the normal motion attacks from Ryu/Ken and the like. Once I got to college, in 2011, and SSF4 was out, I had some friends at school that sat down and taught me how to do everything. My fighting game life changed after that moment. I am still here, year after year, because of SF4. Thank you, Street Fighter 4.
This game is so fun to watch. The Excellent Adventures of Gootecks and Mike Ross is by far one of my fav fighting game video series. SF4's remixed OST is also absolutely top tier!
Max appearing on that show is how I discovered him and I’ve been a religious fan of him since. But that era of the FGC in general was just spectacular. The episodes of Cross Counter where they had a huge crew of the best FGC members running sets is nostalgic gold for me lol
The Music, The Intro, The Art Style, The Variety of Characters, The Supers/Ultras, The Gameplay, The Ink Splash from Focus Attack, The Arcade Mode, The Rival Fights, The Secret Boss Fights, everything was so good. This was the game that made me a SF Fan.
I always liked that when you did a super move, you'd see a literally reaction of "Oh shit!" surprise and shock on your opponent character's face- even if they weren't close enough to get hit, i thought it was a cool and funny touch capcom implemented into that game.
@@daviddennie4086 Honestly though, as a black guy myself, i have seen a good amount of brothas and sistas with some huge eyes. Two people that come to mind for the current time is youtubers "ignant rizzy" and "shuler king" those two brothas got some eye on them. 😂
I got sf4 back in 09 when i was in college. My friend would beat me over and over with ken and this continued on until ssf4ae2012. Fast forward to 2013 and i watched my first sf4 tournament online. From there a huge fire was lit inside me to get better at the game. I bought a fight stick and trained for months and i was still losing. But i didn't give up and i finally became good enough to not only beat my friend but gained a large understanding of the game. Thank you sf4. You really taught me what it means to strive for something you want badly.
To this day, the first two weeks of Super SF4 was probably the most fun I ever had with a fighting game. All 10 new characters dropped with the new version (unlike today where characters drop piecemeal during a "Season") never have I seen such character variety in online matches. It's like everyone collectively decided to break from picking the usual Shotos & Top Tiers to learn the new cast! It was great! ^^
That Kara motion for Ken is so difficult. It took me a month to do Ryu DP FADC into ultra. Ken’s Kara throw inputs are hard to master. In the corner, it’s even more menacing. Definitely worth getting down 100%.
Vanilla SF4 - The era of have and have nots, being able to FADC DP into ultra was so ridiculously powerful a character basically either had it, or they weren't viable, and among those who had it, Sagat was king. Non-ex invincible DPs were just OP in general in this generation, since FADC made it safe even on block, and fire balls returned to being pretty good, albeit not ST levels of game defining. Despite some balance issues, this version will always hold a special place in my heart for bringing back SF, a franchise I don't think I quite realized how much I missed until I played SF4 for the first time. SF4 Home Edition - Not talked about in this video, but the home edition of vanilla, while not changing the balance of the arcade characters, added a ton of new home exclusive characters who were basically all ignored in competitive play because most tournaments were on arcade cabinets which didn't have them, so all of these characters showed up super low on tier charts till SSF4 when they were finally available in arcades, despite the fact characters like, say, Cammy, were actually quite strong, just the strong players weren't using her. SSF4 - Arguably the best version of the game, easily my favorite, significantly nerfed DPs and FADC into ultra, making characters with out DP into Ultra finally viable for the first time, and just generally compressed the tier lists as well as any SF game has ever such that an insane portion of the cast was viable and in the conversation for best in the game. Also added selectable Ultras ala-SF3, with many of them filling in gaps for characters who had largely useless or match up specific ultras in vanilla. Not relevant at high levels of play, but the nerf to DP also reduced the frequency of flow chart ken in lower levels of play, creating more variety at lower levels then ever before. SSF4 AE - Easily the worst version of the game, this version was so bad it eventually caused me to take a break from the game, which was really hard for me after how much I'd loved the first 3 versions. Yun was massively, and per interviews, intentionally, over tuned resulting in a stale meta of yun vs yun in nearly every tournament and at all levels I played at. Also I found oni and evil ryu super un-hype personally, game already felt bloated with shotos and they just added to the bloat. USF4 - Was briefly the best version of SF until people realized how busted Elena was. Never felt quite as bad as with Yun, more comparable to how strong Sagat was in vanilla, Elena users definitely still got upset all the time, but she was OP enough that she kept this from feeling like the definitive edition which for me, will always be SSF4. Also can confirm, almost no one I knew was hype for Decapre, the opinion always seemed to be that her inclusion felt like proof they were rushed and strapped for cash so they just re-used Cammy with a new skin, even if she did play quite uniquely.
I remember when SF4 was first revealed. I was sick at home from school, and I was on my PS3 looking up new trailers on the PS Store, and I saw the gameplay reveal for SF4. It had me so hyped that it brought me back into Street Fighter as a whole. I kept watching this trailer over and over every day until it came out. I even pre-ordered the game when the pre-orders were available. I played the hell out of it, dominated the ranked leaderboards (to an extent) and just had so much fun with my friends, even my brother, who didnt like fighting games, even wanted to play it with me too.
Maaaan, I remember when SF4 came out in arcades. I had moved to LA about a year before it released in arcades, and I was able to catch the hype at Family Fun Arcade before it closed down. The hype was unreal, brought me back to the heyday 90s. I bought Super SF4 on PS3 and played it for awhile, then it just got stale for me and I stopped playing. I occasionally play Ultra SF4 on Steam, but never got super deep into it like I did with the Alpha series. I was honestly just excited that SF was back.
Street fighter 4 on the 3ds was my first fighting game in like middle school lmao I remember thinking it was sooo weird pressing back to block instead of blocking having its own button
This is so crazy, I remember I was about to graduate highschool senior year when this came out, I was so excited SF was making a mainstream return ❤️. Can’t wait for SF6
the game responsible for my love for street fighter and fighting games in general. it will always have a special place in my heart, especially the vanilla version: the characters, the music, the intro, the announcer, the style.. what a great, great chapter.
Max: Oh, it's just Cammy, but not. Max earlier in the same video: Street Fighter IV gets really really interesting when these nutty-ass characters (Evil Ryu and Oni) get added. Love you Max. Ya make me laugh.
We just have to think about it. I was born in 98 so I didn't grew up with fighting games in the arcade. I played them casually, like soul calibur 3 on ps2 on sf4 on 360 and of course I got angry, I was an f'n casual. But then I found that one friend in school, he sadly passed away but he'll be in my heart forever, we played so many fighting games and digged into competitive. We always tried to match and get better than the other but we grew together. And if there is ONE fighting game to thank for, it is street fighter. Street Fighter is THE fighting game. We started playing sf4 on 3ds with the auto special help it gave and then went to pc, learned the motion inputs, got consistent and before we could realize it, we were a part of the fgc. Thanks street fighter, for giving us that great time and opportunity EDIT: I also met a lot of amazing people over the years over open rooms or what its called in english, I got completely destroyed but I learned stuff and met nice people on the way, the community is just amazing
Man, I have never even been that big of a fan of Street Fighter and I can't use 1-fram links to save my life, and I still look back on this one fondly for some reason. Also helps that unlike the newer ones, this one can actually run on my aging rig and is no "Live Service" crap.
Umvc3 and street fighter 4 was my intro into fighting games .the community . The tournaments , the hype is nothing like it is today . I use to be on edge watching tournaments , hyped to smug and him break the fgcs concept on what’s good, diago the beast , pinko the monster , watching mike Ross and goo techs, Maximilian assist me , combo fiends insane comebacks, xian coming out of left field destroying people with insane punishes , ifc yipes this was before the commentary but this is where is started he was still swinging swords with Virgil with hooks in ass ,infiltration the monster with hakan .
This was pretty much my first street fighter since 2 turbo in the early 90's. I absolutely adore SF4, and the Shoto fighters that inspired me to pick up martial arts.
something worth noting with omega mode is that while a lot of the new things characters got weren't directly carried over into sf5 there are a few cases where they definitely did use a concept from omega mode for a different character, like omega Hugo had a parry/counter which functioned nearly identically to how Abigail's v skill 1 would later function in SF5, for example
I loved SF4 vanilla. I remember the early days of having unlocked Gouken, which at that time and in my friend circle was a big deal. Of course later on the other releases had him unlocked as default but for a little while it was great when you saw a Gouken user because it meant they beat the requirements to get him.
'The Return' is a great name for this one. The hype sustained me for years and just like MK9, roster was just about perfect. Every character from prior SFs that I hoped to see ended up making an appearance (with one or two being their canonically final appearance, sadly). Love this game, and still play USF4 once or twice a week on PC.
Max's intro is 100% correct Fighting Games were straight up dead - for all intents and purposes - in 2008. SF3 was not a big hit, like it or not. It was entirely under the radar. SF4 came out and was a massive success, and then MK9 did the same kind of thing with the MK franchise. Revitalized the entire genre.
I remember playing sf2 back in the early 90’s at a movie theater and I was blown away! And eventually got it on snes for Christmas. Me my brother and neighborhood friends would trade off playing it for hours. This will be my 1st SF since Sf4 and I can’t wait!!!
I also remember when Oni and Evil Ryu were playable at the arcade before they were even announced. Somehow at Chinatown Fair people were already playing as them, Henry Cen (the owner) already updated the game, then once it was everywhere Capcom announced it haphazardly.
SF4 did not bring me back into fighting games, but I did enjoy it on 360 immensely. It also made me realize there was a level of play beyond even the kids in the arcades in the early 2000s that I could never approach.
Sf4 nailed something that 5 and now 6 have messed up, the losing character actually screams in pain on the knockout hit while airborne, instead of when they're lying on the floor. Its all in the little details. Sf4 also had far better weight and hit sound / feel than 5 or 6.
I remember SF4 fondly. I was 25 or so at the time. I had a ton of time to practice due to being out of a job (Thanks recession) and my friends also had only part time jobs. So wed meet up at a friends house and get snacks and beer. Fuck man.... Good times... Also, I was a Fei main. The length of his normals were amazing.
Thanks to SF4 4 other buddies and myself would get together almost every weekend, get some pizza, some beers and have "Street Fighter Night". Good times. We only had Xbox's so it sucked for us when SF5 only came out for PS. But we're all stoked to get back together after all these years.
I still feel like SF4 is where the game peaked in aesthetic, marketing, writing and visual story telling. The roster is honestly the best in the series to me. It had a great balance that represented all the eras of Street Fighter. A great mix of the classic SF2 cast, Alpha Cast, 3rd Strike and a pretty good amount of newcomers like El Fuerte, Juri, Hakan, C. Viper etc. Such an amazing game all around that deserved so much more appreciation than it got. I am glad SF6 is definitely an improvement in it’s marketing and gameplay but man I do miss the more anime aesthetic that 4 went with, especially since Capcom actually weren’t being cheapskates and went out of their way to fully animate story mode cutscenes.
I still remember when the first trailer for Street Fighter IV came out... 🤯🤯 Has it already been 15 years since the originanl Street Fighter IV came out? Dang. I wonder if Capcom would ever port over Ultra Street Fighter IV and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition in a PS5 compilation.
I didn't start really getting serious about improving in fighting games until the past couple years, but Street Fighter 4 is the reason I'm into fighting games at all, and my friends and I have been playing this genre ever since. Old games, new games, Street Fighter, BlazBlue, King of Fighters, Guilty Gear, Tekken, we wouldn't be into any of it without Street Fighter 4.
Sf4 was the one that made me go back and play SF II properly. It was the one that made me realize that Third Strike existed ( and was perfect). It was the one that made me watch Evo live and freak out watching Snake Eyes vs Xian. It was the one that had fucking Gouken. Man, what a game.
Street Fighter 4 was my first Street Fighter and clearing Seth on hardest difficulty remains one of my greatest video game achievements to this day! You DON'T know Seth until you've cleared him on hardest and it HAS to be Arcade!
Growing up in the 90s, I was aware of fighting games, but didn't really get into them right away. When I got to high school, I remember playing a bunch of Smash 64 and Tekken 3 with friends, they were simply in the roster of a bunch of other multiplayer games that we played a bunch. It wasn't until I'm in college and I stumble across the weekly tournaments Alex Valle was doing with SSF4AE and UMvC3 that I become a diehard fan (though mostly one who watches rather than plays). I remember thinking that Ultra was a pretty good game, and I was riveted by the EVO championships at the time. I know there were folks at the time talking about how tired they were of the game, but since I had gotten on board halfway through SF4's lifespan, I didn't understand that, and was more than happy to see the bizarre chess matches that happened with Ultra. It's kind of weird. Despite the fact that I really haven't played SF4 all that much, I have a lot of good memories watching all those tournaments and getting to know the fun personalities of the FGC. It really did feel like a community, one where I could sit on the edge and enjoy the warmth of what had become quite the blazing fire. While I still don't play fighting games very much (I'm not good at execution-based things), I've kept up with the latest news, games, and updates of this genre, and watched EVO every nearly every year for the past decade, and it's all because of SF4. Great video as always, Max.
SF4 was where I truly felt that I found other people that were into fighting games. This felt like a nice gateway into the FGC considering the time it came out, but I might be biased cause this was around the time I found Max 😅
street fighter 4 was amazing. I was in college when it came out and I grew up with sf2 and alpha, I owned sf3 ts on dreamcast but never had I ever actually invested 100% of the game until SF4. I unlocked all characters, i taught myself everyone's moves, I did all the training combo challenges, I played online, and even though I never reached evo tier, I had a blast playing at an advanced casual tier.
Was following gootecks, Ross and ed ma during ‘08, on RU-vid, so hype. I had just gotten back into gaming w/ the x360. Am a mid 80s kid and grew up in mall arcades - 8hrs per day in summers, as my dad ran one of the concession stands. Always got my ass whooped 😂 - lots of trash talk, been there since the boys and girls club, which had an OG World Warrior SF2 But I got really good with Ken and Rose in USF4, as well as cammy, Sagan and Yun - with Yun and Ken being the most fun rushdown style. I can’t believe I’m even decent with Ken in SF6!
I owe a lot to SF4, not only for it being the gateway for me into Street Fighter but also the fgc as a whole. More importantly though this was a game that my friends and I came together to play a lot (next to smash) so i always think back to the multi hour sessions, first to 20s etc. I was lucky enough to be at Chinatown fair when AE was there, and met a few legends that at the time I didn't know were legends. While I never got that good, SF4 definitely started me on the path to finding people like Max, Mike ross(and gootecks🙃), and a bunch of other influencers and community members in the larger scale of everything. It truly accomplished its mission as a gateway into the community. I really hope 6 does the same for a lot of people.
SFIV is when SF and fighting games clicked for me. I remember picking up Sakura starting in Arcade Edition. Its why she's one of my favorite SF characters
My local GameStop had a street fighter 4 tournament when it released and it was so hype… and yes I won but the prize was a $20 gift card but I gave it to a little boy because he cried when I beat him. Everybody had a good time.
My only regret on sf4 is i was so stuck into it i didnt get into marvel vs capcom 3 when it was fresh and hot. Getting into it now is just not the same. But man that game was something special along with sf4 and sf vs tk
I distinctly remember buying SF4 at GameStop used on Xbox 360 back in I guess high school and I played the hell out of it! This was way before I started my RU-vid channel, so I didn't think to record gameplay or even review the game itself. I loved it then, and I still do today! I never got or tried SF5 though. 6 however looks fantastic!
Sf4 was the first fighting game i decided to learn instead of button pressjng i learned raging demon by heart and i went back to all my old games and learned how to play those sf4 really sparked with me (also imo has the best theme song)
SFIV has a special place for me. I went to Chinatown Fair (RIP) to get washed by a sweaty Guile mad early. And spotted a wild Justin Wong in his natural habitat. I learned Abel and took my revenge online 😂This game woke up my fighting spirit.
i just love that blazblue thankfully through this release just exploded in popularity due to SF4 coming around before it and rekindling the flame of fighting games
Gosh, I remember I was a sophmore in high school when vanilla SF4 came out. My buddy from out of state brought his 360 over and we played the shit out of it. Ultra SF4 and UMvC3 still remain some of my favorite fighting games even though I am absolute garbage at both of them 🥰
One of my favorite things about SF6 is that Drive Rush feels a lot like FADC. Its nice that some of the things I learned from 4 is some what useful in 6. I wish there were more SF4 characters in 6 just because I love the roster. I was a Gen main, and it was so fun. Oh my god the further I get into this video, the nostalgia gets even more intense. Oni, Evil Ryu, ibuki, Goken, Yun, Yang, im going to on Steam and DL this if it still works.
Ultra sf4 to me is peak sf4. Nearly that entire roster gets multiplied and the new inclusions were pretty damn cool despite Elena being broken. The introduction of Omega which almost felt like characters like 3rd Strike Ken made into the modern Era. To this day Ultra sf4 will remain my favorite Street Fighter of all time.
SF4 was the game that really got me into fighting games, now typing this we will be playing SF6 tomorrow what a time to be alive. Even though i'm old and suck more at fighters haha.
Great video, love the detail and insight into the competitive scene and community around that time! I do wish you went a little more into the characters and overall content that 4 added. I’m someone who owned the original Street Fighter 4 long after all the update versions have dropped, but getting even somewhat familiar with Juri-Han through the fandom/community is what got me both invested in the series and also fighting games as a whole. I think there’s a lot of stories like this with other characters as well! ^^ I respect the focus on the competitive scene but I think there’s a lot of value in acknowledging both a little more, and that variety is how SF4 was such a big success. ^^
I remember how much hype there was with each new trailer for sf4. Overhype isn't quite enough to describe the feeling. My ringtone at the time was sf4 intro, my alarm was fei long theme... I spent over 1000h on pc completing every survival course with every character... twice! And even started a 3rd one. I still have the games on my drawer😂😂 Sf4 was amazing. Then ae came out... sfxt... Then i got a ps3 and bought everything again😂😂
Yea I started playing during SSF4. Played SF4 two times but could never understand or get used to the controls. Man AE and 2012 were definitely my favorite time playing this game. It was such a blast even if Yun was just a broken OP monster before 2012. Literally the most fun. Hoping to get some excitement back with SF6
SSF4 was alot of fun from a casual perspective. I was only 12 when I got it on Xbox so I never actually learned the mechanics like that. Same thing with Tekken 6.
Sf4 was the fighting game that brought the FGC in the mainstream level. And I’m a MK fan 4life. And I’m proud to say that the SF franchise is the best in the business. And more importantly the FGC can sit in the same room and respectfully have love for the fighting games that they are not good at. The paradigm shift in the gaming industry has street fighter 4 as one of its major contributors. No CAP
