Fun fact: their vocalist in this song was the guest male vocalist in Nightwish second album (before Marko joined the band). There's even a performance of him in the iconic concert from wishes to eternity when he duet Tarja in The Pharaoh sails to Orion. That performance is worthy of a reaction FYI.
You should definitely give a go for the two first Finntroll albums, they are some of the very best folk metal has to offer. Midnattens Widunder and Jaktens Tid are both in my all time top 10 album list. And just for you to know, Henri Sorvali from Moonsorrow has been a part of this band since 1998 (2004 onwards he dropped live shows and is focused on songwriting and studio recordings)
Glad you liked them! You're absolutely right that this premise could have been very dark, but instead it's presented lightly. This is the case for most of their music which has these very folksy, almost silly, tavern or bard-like quality. Some of it's a little more serious and war-like, but nothing too morbid or horrifying (ala Slaughter to Prevail's Baba Yaga). As already mentioned, though they are Finnish, they sing in Swedish, because it sounds more "troll-like", and it definitely does. Certainly worth checking them out again!
As a Swedish speaker, I know that it is not possible to translate their lyrics. Yes, the meaning but not the greatness of them. No Swede could have written this because it is so odd.
Within the genre, my choice is Korpiklaani. English and Finnish sounds more pleasant to me, Jonne Järvelä vocals also. Their alcohol-tribute songs give you amazing mood like no other. And increase sales in bars at live performances. ))
they are fucking cool. saw them many tmes live some years ago. Sadly they wasn't a long time in switzerland. Had everytime a real blast with a liitle too much beer:). But if you listen to some older song they are much harder.
Somnium was already deceased when Nattfödd was composed. Henri Sorvali (Trollhorn) wrote half the music already on Jaktens tid. If you want to talk about the only true album composed mainly by a founding member, it's Midnattens Windunder, the first album, where Somnium composed almost every song. After that Trollhorn took the musical compositions. And also Katla is still involved, by writting a lot of the lyrics since then. Henri Sorvali can almost be considered as an original member, as Tundra and Skrymer, as they have been in the band even before Midnattens Windunder was composed/released.
