Alien 3 to this day is one of the most divisive films in history. How does it stand up all these years later, I take an in depth look at the history of Alien 3 and examine the theatrical and assembly cut as fairly as I can. What do you think of this film, misunderstood, failure or a bit of both?
Alien 3 is a 1992 American science fiction horror film directed by David Fincher and written by David Giler, Walter Hill, and Larry Ferguson, from a story by Vincent Ward. It stars Sigourney Weaver, reprising her role as Ellen Ripley. It is the third installment of the Alien franchise and led to a sequel, Alien Resurrection (1997).
Set immediately after the events of Aliens (1986), Ripley and an Alien organism are the only survivors of the Colonial Marine spaceship Sulaco following an escape pod's crash on a planet housing a penal colony populated by violent male inmates. Additional roles are played by Charles Dance, Brian Glover, Charles S. Dutton, Ralph Brown, Paul McGann, Danny Webb, Lance Henriksen, Holt McCallany, Pete Postlethwaite, and Danielle Edmond.

I always thought that as the Alien was born out of a Dog, it had the Dogs traits i.e. all fours, way it fed and its speed etc.

Yeah interesting, I think it's changed to a cow in the assembly cut tho, I presume to appease dog lovers I mean tbf seeing a dog die like that was pretty graphic

Overall I think it's a movie with great things in it, that overall doesn't amount to a great movie in itself. The theatrical cut is bad, the Assembly Cut is better, but drags a lot in the middle for me.

Great rundown of super troubled production and Finchers eviscerated version of Alien3. I am totally biased as I think the killing of two characters (in either version) a breath of fresh air and brave creative step, weaver also losing her hair (which cost another two million dollars reputedly to weavers wage) . Now to both cuts-i am in small minority but I think both version good and entertaining (both flawed by backroom troubles) but the embracing of what Kubrick coined ; "the universe Dosent care..." Which appears to be the touchstone of this movie and superb acting -peter Guinness, Paul McCann (his expanded role in the assembly cut justifies Finchers belief in him as an actor) Brian glover (who on a sidenote supported Finchers direction and was supposedly his confidante in the production. Norman Reynolds production design and Alex Thompsons lighting all sustain what Finchers cut could have been, Alien3 is the classic Hollywood story of a brilliant you g director brought to heel by the studio interference and whichever version of Alien3 you watch it still is Finchers but a flawed gem none the less. Great multiple review of massively complex production

Golic isn't found bloody in the canteen after he's released the alien, it's when Boggs and Rains have been killed.

Very goood video here Jim, though in the defense on the CGI, there actually is very little of it in the movie. The only CGI in the movie was adding in debris in a couple of shots (like when Michael Bishop and the Weyland-Yutani scientist/commandos approch the prison) and the shot of the xenomorph's dome cracking. I think most of the shots you're confusing for CGI were actually rod puppets that were photo-chemically added into a number of scenes. Alien 3 was one of the last movies to use that technique. I might be wrong here but I think the only CGI used within these rod puppet shots were to add shadows to the xenomorph. As it stands there is no full CGI shot of the xenomorph in Alien 3. The first fully rendered CGI xeno didn't appear until Alien Resurrection involving the under water scene.

When the start of the movie invalidates the end of one of the best action movies ever made, its really hard to look past that and give this movie any real praise.

That's a very narrow-minded point of view. They killed two characters in a HORROR movie. Oh, the humanity!
@SirSayakaMikiThe3rd
@SirSayakaMikiThe3rd 11 месяцев назад
@@matics898 That's a very reductive way to describe what I'm saying. The issue isn't that two characters died in a horror movie. It's that they were killed off-screen in a vastly inferior movie. Part of the enjoyment of aliens is the struggle for survival and the bonds formed, especially with Newt and Ripley given that Ripley's daughter passed away. For the following movie to simply have them die off-screen is wholly unsatisfying and added nothing to the horror element of the movie, nor did it advance the plot in a meaningful way. You could absolutely kill them off with a proper script, but thats not what happened. Having Newt die on screen in a traumatic fashion could certainly enhance the horror elements and serve as some kind of motivation for Ripley in a better film. Or you could just not milk a franchise and just leave it be.

No it's not bad. It just came after aliens and everyone seems to just want that movie over and over. I like to imagine there was a full story with Ripley , hicks and newt after aliens and before alien3, we just didn't see it. And that story ended with them crashing into alien3.
@JimTheMovieGeek

That would have been better if they did that, or just had them somehow get separated or something

I will never understand the fandom always saying how good the film would have been on a wooden planet with monks. I swear people only say that because its cool to not like this movie. The movie was good and even with all the turmoil between the director and the studio it still stands as a great film. the biggest issue people have with it is that Newt and Hicks get killed off. Im sorry but its an Alien movie not a kids movie. The atmosphere of this franchise is supposed to be dread and a nightmare. Ripley doesnt get the happy ending thats the point.
@poloshirtsamurai
@poloshirtsamurai 4 месяца назад
Exactly. It's a horror film and those two, Hicks and Newt, are just deadweights anyway. Dillon and Morse and more useful than those two could ever dream of. If people had their way with a one-up'd Aliens, with more guns and comedy, we'd have Alien Resurrection in advance. lol
@bulbafett6451
@bulbafett6451 4 месяца назад
@@poloshirtsamurai I agree. like its the Alien franchise its not supposed to be about happy endings. In my opinion that's what I like about it. It isn't "and they lived happily ever after." its "in space no one can hear you scream." The third fil for all of its production flaws and hiccups the assembly cut is a great movie and its right up there with the first two for me. I love Dillon's character and also love Mors' character and I don't see how they really get any real character development or screen time if you have Newt and Hicks still around.

@@bulbafett6451 That said, I do agree that it's a contrivance for the alien to leave eggs in the EEV. But, I can suspend my disbelief to enjoy my favorite Alien movie which have the best characters, eg., Dillon, Morse, Clemens and even 85. And how Bishop requesting to be turned of is so poignant.

Greet video Jim. I hated this film when I saw it in 92. It wasn't Aliens. I hated it whens Ripley died. However ive completely changed my mind. It's my favourite. I dont have a problem with the ending anymore I think it was a good way to end the franchise I wish it ended here.

The Assembly Cut is the only way to watch Alien 3.. It fills in all the holes and made the movie how it was supposed to be. I thought the movie was straight up trash until watching Assembly Cut.. Unlike the Snyder Cut of Justice League which made the movie even more trash.

People hate this film because they just want to be in Fincher's side and echoes whatever he says and their stupid attachment to Hicks and that annoying tea kettle, Newt. Who are just deadweights anyway. What have they both done in the second film for me to care for their fate? If Aliens continued with more guns, more characters and more comic relief, we would've gotten Alien Resurrection in advance, and here I thought everyone hated that film. I love Aliens 3 the most because it brought it back to horror. No advanced weapons. Just an unlikely group of people trying to survive by outwitting it. Just like in the first film. Dillon and Morse are million times better than Hicks and Newt.
