If you are thinking of building a water feature, this video is a MUST for you! John takes you down the "cost" rabbit hole today. Once you finish constructing your water feature it will require some ONGOING MAINTENANCE to keep it looking pristine. You will be informed on what those costs are (in time as well as money) so you can understand the true cost of water feature ownership!
UNDERSTAND HE LOVES HIS WATER FEATURE! This is a "truth hike" to prepare you for what you're getting into, not to talk you out of it ;)
You will learn about:
1) Costs related to seasonal maintenance, including the Products we use and the cost in time (or money) that will be required to keep on top of things.
2) Electrical costs associated to the operation of your feature and even its lighting system!
3) What you can expect to wear out in your feature. John compares it to the "wear parts" in a car. Similar to the tires, the brakes, etc., he covers things that eventually need to be replaced. He talks about warranty expectations and general life expectancy of properly selected pumps, lights, etc. and what some replacement costs might look like.
4) At the end he discusses a few costs that he "incurs" that he didn't expect when he built his feature ;) Some of the added expenses that he "loves to pay" to enhance his outdoor paradise!
Tell us what you think in the comments below.
Happy Pondering ;-)

That’s awesome! Nothing against CAC’s but they are def not all created equal. You should watch this and apply it when the time comes, it will be worth your time ;) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-C9NS59OsYRY.html

Thanks for presenting something on the costs of maintaining a 'water feature' at a home. Back in my high school/college days I worked for a pool contractor/maintenance service (the owner was my parent's neighbor) and that showed me the ongoing costs to maintain such a system (and we were just cleaning pools/spas/fountains with no vegetation). As long as you know what the ongoing costs will be and can accept those costs, then go for it. But if you're like me I'll never get a 'water feature' in my yard; nothing but a 'money pit' to me!.

Absolutely and the worst thing in the world that can happen is for us to build a water feature for someone who doesn’t want to have the reoccurring maintenance costs associated with it. Thanks for your honest input.👍

LOVE LOVE LOVE your oasis , i only have one beef with it , why didn't you build this 6 years ago when i was starting mine i have gotten some crazy idea from your build. Not that I did all that badly , GREG liked it enough to name it diy of the year . But you would have pushed me to build the retaining wall higher and make the project one for the ages, Congrads completing your build and winning regional at this years pondemonium . Ps you can almost triple that electric cost up here in Ct. I know i run the same pump but only one.

I appreciate the congrats! We aim to please ;) As for 6 years ago LOL- I could never have done it…wasn’t ready…wasn’t able financially…would’ve had a total meltdown! TThe hat is crazy power cost. I would have to (and am thinking about) doing some solar. Got so many “needs” lol! Have a great weekend!

I love your videos soooo much. I recommend you to everyone. Please would you think about doing a video on your choice to use crushed granite instead of pebbles in the bottom of the oasis swim pond. Tristan said that the plan was not to clean out the swim pond… would love an explanation on this 🙏🏼💕

Crushed Granite instead of pebbles or instead of sand??? In the past it has Not been recommended to use sand in your pond…as it will float and disperse in the water making it cloudy; whereas a crushed granite is a clean stone heavy very fine and a way softer feel than the stones and pebbles of what conventionally is used. There has been a number of videos discussing this topic between Team Aquascape and Atlantis water gardens.

The only downside I’ve seen so far is that I have one Koi that is very aggressive grubbing in the granite, and he seems to be rubbing his lips raw😂

Great video as always. I feel is missing the possible cost of water (due to evaporation).
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 11 месяцев назад
You are correct! Didn’t think of that…We have a well so our water is very good quality and the cost is very insignificant. In other areas that may not be the case. My feature captures rain water as well so we use that as a buffer and mostly we get enough rain to keep it full. I don’t actually even have to add the hose yet for almost 3 months. The number I use to calculate avg water consumption is about 1% of flow. SO mu pumps run 30,000 GPH so 300 gallons per day is my “expected” usage and we are pretty spot on for that. I have calculated somewhere from 300-500 gallons per day depending on about 100 factors LOL!! Good comment ;)

I love lilies too! Do you have lotus? I don't know what zone Tennessee is so I'm not sure if you can have them. I just went to Japan in October and it was incredible! I also love my fish this is my sixth pond. Your advice about people gravitating towards their water feature is so apt I think it's a good thing disclose. Thanks for all the great and informative videos I just watched your series on bog filters

Great video. I've tried the water hyacinths this year and all 3 have not done well. Wondering if there's something going on with the stock this year. Do you find the water lilies more robust and reliable? Since you love in TN, you don't have as harsh winters as we do in Northern ILL. Would love a larger pond, but I would hate to over winter and have to empty out.
@KoiAddiction
@KoiAddiction 11 месяцев назад
Plenty of ponds in Illinois. Most just “winterize” with an aerator or special pump setup to keep a hole in the ice. It is very doable! As far as water hyacinth- ours didn’t do great this year either. We have lettuce (which usually dies out from the heat) but it is doing well this year, Our lilies are doing great- I spent the day yesterday planting more and potting up and fertilizing. The flowers are starting to really fire off for us now. Should be 2 months of flowers coming in hot!!

After viewing several pond videos, I suggest the presenters stop drinking the water. It's having a noticeable effects on them.
