In January 1953, a New York City musician named Christopher “ Manny” Balestrero was wrongly arrested for armed robbery, misidentified by eye witnesses. What followed was a nightmarish ordeal that completely devastated him and his family. Alfred Hitchcock was so moved by the miscarriage of justice that he made the case the focus of his underrated, classic 1956 film "The Wrong Man".
My guest is Jason Isralowitz, author of "Nothing To Fear: Alfred Hitchcock And The Wrong Men". He shares details of the true crime case that revealed some concerning flaws in the American criminal justice system.

I am 30 minutes in, and totally enjoying this. I am both a fan of Hitchcock and of true crime. This is wonderful. Thank you.

Just watched The Wrong Man last night, got curious about the real story, wound up on this vid. Excellent interview. Surprising how very closely the film events reflect the real events. Almost every other "based on a true story" movie drastically alters and embellishes to such a degree that it's pointless to consider the film a worthwile source of accurate info. Not so with TWM.

My grown daughter recently asked me to make a list of old movies she should watch, and this was one I put in the Film Noir category, this and D.O.A.

It definitely is a great film. I think it is one of Hitchcock's best.

I love it when he gets into REALLY old cases, like the Cantilupe murder during the 100 year war. Or how Charles the 6th's brother (Louis) was "beaten like a mattress" with swords and axes on the streets of Paris by a group of hired thugs from John the Bold/Fearless. Those where absolutely epic

@@MostNotorious Would you ever consider doing an episode on Gillis De Rias? Did you hear about how Gillis was retried in the 90s and found innocent, do to lack of evidence? That they never actually found any bodies or bones on Gillis property? I'm absolutely fascinated in knowing the truth to what really happened, and I honestly think you're one of the few people who can get a legit conclusion.

This is amazing. I’ve seen bits and pieces of “The Wrong Man”, but now I’ll have to take a look at the whole movie. I also wonder about Hitchcock’s story about his father sending him to the police station with a note and getting locked in a holding cell, and how it might relate to his interest in Baldasero’s case.

Fascinating story. There is a case where a pregnant woman was SAd and beaten almost to death. She lost baby and then later identified it being her husband who did it. Her husband (a white man )was convicted and sent to prison. Many years later the true attacker (a black man) confessed. The husband was eventually freed and the wife still believed it was him. His name was Kevin Green. A perfectly horrible case for misidentification.

As someone who has not seen he film or read the book, I could not follow discussion for most of the beginning of your video. Would have meant more if you had started with the crime and then why the verdict. Stopped watching at 11 minutes in.

I’ve got nothing against low-key movies, but this was one of the dullest movies ever made by Hitchcock. Fonda was alright, but the documentary style stymied any dramatic effect.
