Beautiful. The reality is that many of the words of the Quran are often vague & general and have been deliberately made like this by Allah and in order to express many complementary meanings that require us to use our reason, intellect, and “tadabbur” of the Quran (as Allah commands us) in order to capture their true and full meanings (if we ever possibly can). This is why the “verses” of the Quran are called “āyāt” (signs/proofs/evidences/MIRACLES). They require us to think and be amazed and convinced at what we are hearing or reading. As for “taqwa,” I would say this is a great definition, unlike how you normally see it translated as “righteous.” Although this can be vaguely true, the word righteous in the Quran is actually “Sālih (singular)/As-Sālihīn (plural)” and literally means “to correct/fix/reform/‘make right’” And interestingly, one of the clear meanings of the word Taqwa in the Quran is actually “to protect & restrain oneself from aggression.” This is because Allah (swt) clearly links the two meanings by juxtaposing them with each other in many āyāt, like the ones here below: *”And cooperate in righteousness and TAQWA, but do not cooperate in sin and AGGRESSION. And fear God; indeed, God is severe in penalty.” (Quran 5:2)* ^^^Clearly, aggression in this āyah is being contradistinguished/made opposite to “agression,” which gives the main meaning of “taqwa” here as “those who restrain themselves from aggression.” *”That is the home of the Hereafter which We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth nor corruption & destruction. And the [best] outcome is for the ‘Mutaqīn’ (i.e those who restrain themselves from such evil & aggression).” (Quran 28:83)* *”Indeed, they will never avail you against God at all. And indeed, the wrongdoers & oppressors are allies of one another; but God is the protector of the ‘Mutaqīn’ (i.e those who protect themselves from oppression/aggression and sin).” (Quran **45:19**)* And just to remind ourselves further, ‘Taqwa’ is certainly the first quality and description of true believers as given in the Quran (Surah 2:2). This shows its paramount importance. So may God, the Most Merciful One, help to make us of the ‘Mutaqīn’ - those who fear Him and protect & restrain ourselves from all acts of disobedience, sin, aggression, oppression, and corruption. Salam ‘Alaikum to you all.

@Go Transcrie Yes it can also mean that. It has a host of different meanings (depending on context) due to the fluidity of the Arabic language. Personally, I find its primary meanings in the Qur’an to be “Self-control/Self-discipline” | “Consciousness/Awareness” | “To be careful/cautious/Watch out” | “To cover/shield”. If you simply read the context, you will see this to be the case, and the Qur’an will make much more sense. Salam.

The islamic sacred law, under nature of legal rulings defines taqwa as "godfearingness" (e.g. Umdat -as-Salik Book c6.3 (see also Book w52.1); other Books, including Book M: Marriage, agree the definition. That is the shari'ah position.
@celestialknight2339

Strong Aingel Salam ‘Alaikum. Just to clarify, there is absolutely no such thing as an official book (or books) of ‘Islamic sacred law’- we only have that which was sent down by God as revelation as our only source of law & guidance, and then we must work collectively to try and understand it the best we can. Scholars have debated about the details of the shari’ah (which simply means ‘path/pathway’ in Arabic) for over 1,400 years. Perhaps only the major foundational pillars have been agreed on fully. And that reality of difference in opinion most certainly also goes for the complete understanding of the Quran as a whole. We don’t go to scholars of law to clarify matters of language. So the word “taqwa” and any other Quranic term should be properly explained by experts in the field of language (Classical Arabic linguists, philologists, grammarians, etc.) which we then try to understand the best we can based on the context. But the words of the Quran very rarely (and probably never) have only one defined meaning. There are a plethora of complementary meanings for most words in the Quran, that all come together to create vivid images and lessons to learn, which is what makes the Quran such a diverse and yet unified book of signs & miracles (āyāt) which is why the Quran calls its ‘verses’ by such a profound title (essentially putting the statements of God in the same level as any visible miracle or divine sign). So don’t restrict the meaning of ‘taqwa’ to JUST “God-fearing.” It has many other meanings that can be derived from the root word, which can all agree with ‘God-fearing’ but which also add more complementary meanings to it and make it more wholistic and Quranically correct in terms of context. For example, the word ‘taqwa’ also means “restraining/protecting oneself from agression” (as clearly laid out by Quran 28:83, 5:2, 45:19, etc.). This same principle of diversity in meanings is true for most, if not all, of the Quran. And I am not saying anything new here, and this is why God Almighty commands us in the Quran itself to do “taddabur” (pondering/thinking) over the Quran and to use our reason and intellect. This wouldn’t be the case if the Quran had a rigid 1-meaning interpretation to each word. So I hope you can understand what I’m saying. And again, just to clarify, there is absolutely NO one single book (or books) of “Shari’ah” or “Islamic sacred Law” that you can use as evidence to make a point and then confidently say “this is the position of the Shari’ah.” No, that is the position of the human or group of humans who wrote that specific book. But ultimately, the truth goes back to the revelation of God alone, which illuminates the true ‘Shariah’ (pathway). Salam. *”Do they not carefully reflect & ponder over the Quran? And if it had been from any other than God, they would have surely found within it much contradiction & discrepancy.” (Quran 4:82)*
