In reality, whiskey distillation has its roots in the Islamic world, where an Arab alchemist between the 8th and 9th centuries AD. he used a primitive still to develop a distillation process. Instead of discovering the quintessence, the fifth element, he created aqua vitae, a powerful alcohol-based elixir believed to be curative.
However, its history is deeply rooted in Scotland, Ireland and the United States. Distillation has its roots in India, circa 7,000 BC, where disinfectants were prepared. This practice spread to China and Egypt, where it was used for mummification and cosmetics.
Modern whiskey distillation, as known today, was discovered by the Persians around 1,000 BC. and further developed by the Arabs in the period of the 8th and 9th centuries, through alchemical studies.
Thanks to Christian missionaries, this innovation arrived in Europe around 1000 AD. An important contribution to the understanding of distillation was made by Michele Savonarola in the 15th century, a doctor and humanist from Padua, grandfather of the famous Dominican friar Girolamo Savonarola. In his treatise "De Arte confectionis acquae vitae", he described the products of distillation for medical use.
