The True Nature Of Reality (w/Dr. Bernardo Kastrup) 

I read about 4 of Bernardo's books a few years back, and they actually changed the way reality felt to me on a day-to-day basis. Slightly disconcerting at the time, but fascinating all the same!

What you call a confirmation bias is the very process BK is describing as the push from behind, the feeling our way to what wants to unfold by sensing whether you're getting cold or hot. It's not something to shy away from, it should be embraced.

I know what you mean about being hard to find people to discuss it with. My brother ( without quite realising it ) is a hardcore materialist and talking with him about this stuff is rather frustrating. He simply cannot allow the space for it within his materialist mental frame.

The more you talk about it, the more you understand it.

I recently started listening to Bernardo, although I have to admit he talks a bit over my head most of the time. I understand the whole concept of our consciousness creating our material world, I’ve never been able to figure out how he feels on the death of us, do we continue to a “new reality” where we continue to create our reality?

@Santiago Franco of course there is nothing wrong with religions...when you are not interested in what you can prove to be true and you are only interested in comforting death denying ideologies.

One of the best discussions on the subject I've ever heard. It set aside all the minutiae of neurology and scientism we hear in all the other theories - and all the conceited dismissal of higher consciousness (God if you will).

Yes, revolutionary in the truest sense of that word. Idealism as formulated by Kant and then taken up by Schopenhauer has, in fact, been termed a Copernican revolution in epistemology. Of course, that description is only applicable to the West. Idealism has a long tradition in the East stretching back millennia.

I've been reading BK for a few years and am always deeply inspired by his message. It wouldn't surprise me if he got famous because of his courage and concise explanations. If we're going to have a paradigm change no one else is more qualified to lead the charge. It would be perfectly 'natural' of him.

It's probably just a knee-jerk reaction to religion on the part of the physicalists. If this is true, spirituality/religion become the truth and the religion of physicalism is debunked. That's absolutely horrifying to anyone who has lived their entire life self-indulgently and selfishly, ignoring the spiritual, by believing a lie, a fairy tale for adults (physicalism).

However, after some experiences and then researching the subject in more detail, now I am not so sure. I am an engineer that specializes in MRI systems, part of my work involves supporting several functional brain research teams. I have even participated in some studies, so I am well aware of what we know and don't know about brain function research with MRI. As I see it, just because they know a lot about what parts of the brain are active during various cognitive functions, doesn't mean they have a clue why we are conscious. I have also seen the theories about self actualizing feed back loops of complex systems, IMO that is all just wild speculation which also provides no evidence. Non of this even begins to explain conscious inner experience. Unless you know of direct evidence that demonstrates complex material interaction generating conscious experience? So, when you state that materialism "is literally confirmed by every evidence in the universe." Can you see how that is a pure dogmatic belief? It is every bit as presumptuous and dogmatic as any religious belief. IMO it might be worse, because it masquerades as science, when really it is at best pseudoscience. It is just like when Medical science told us to cut fat out of our diet and eat more carbohydrates. We all believed that was based on "science" turns out nope, just some doctor incorrectly reasoned that eating fat will make you fat and clog your arteries. But he was supposedly an authority in his field and had a white coat, so everyone went along with it (including most doctors), forty years later after rampant obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, we now know that was a lot of BS. So that brings us to Bernardo's view on Idealism, is it possible that some form of consciousness is fundamental (the ontological primitive)? Why would that be impossible? Is it any less probable than some mysterious physical interaction spontaneously generating conscious experience? Some would say yes because we know matter exists, therefore it has to be matter regardless of whether or not we can explain it. Well, others would argue that everything we know about matter is through conscious experience, and for all we know it is the material world that is a type of illusion built by a conscious immaterial mind. After all, the only thing we can be absolutely certain of (evidence) is that we are conscious, no? People tend to believe that the material world is more real than our conscious experience because it appears to be continuous and consistent. However, we only perceive this to be true through our conscious experience, and there's the rub. This line of reasoning requires a great deal of abstract critical thinking that is not plainly evident to most people. However, once you see it, you can't un-see it. I am not saying I know for sure this is it, but it is a plausible explanation that answers a lot of questions that materialism cannot answer. As Bernardo explains, it is a parsimonious explanation, IMO that alone makes it an attractive option. I don't think we can ever know for certain, Is Idealism correct? Materialism? Religion? I honestly don't know for certain which is why I call out those that claim otherwise. If I had to place a bet right now, I would go with some form of Idealism, but I am open to change my opinion if new evidence is presented. Hopefully you now understand why I believe Materialism is dogma (because it literally is).

We agree on that. Science doesn't deal with ultimate truth or ulitmate knowledge. It can only produce Descriptive frameworks relative to our limitations in our observations and methods. Objectivity in science is an important standard, but its not exclusive to Science. Its a criterion that any claims (scientific or not) needs to meet in order to be accepted for its truth or knowledge value. Without the ability to objectively evaluate a claim...it becomes "not even wrong". Ultimate truth is an idealist goal we strive for not something that we can point to and describe in detail. I have no theory for any of it but it was a very strong experience. Another thing I remember is the reentering - I had to search my brain to figure out who I was.

Alan Watts knew the obvious, what happens once always happens once because what always happens once happens once. If are are infinitely irrational as the majority of human history then you will always believe this is your first point of existence and will never recognize irrational beliefs because only a rational human as the minority of human history can always recognize irrational beliefs to realize that they are the repeating Universe and the repeating Universe is them at this exact same moment forever. The Universe and I and I and the Universe are the infinite repeating origin story(history), existence can never change, existence always first believes it exist as change to always realize it exist infinitely so therefore it can never change, now repeat.
