Nice and concise. Thank you. Women like Aethelfaed are more remarkable than we can know. In that age, while women could be powerful, none ruled on their own. And certainly none attempted to compel their warriors to pledge loyalty to their daughter. While that loyalty proved short lived, to even attempt it meant that she was recognized as a very powerful ruler. Also she was victorious in battle and in the 10th century, if you were a battle winner, that secured people's respect. It id sad that so little is actually known of her.

Thank you so much for watching Scott! I hope you enjoyed the video, I agree, she was incredible. Described as Mercia's last warrior queen, and it is sad, if only Edward and Aethelfaed would have been as good at keeping letters and documenting things as their father Alfred we would know more!

Finally someone agrees with me! She was incredible. I don't think people appreciate the impact she had on world history. She, her father, her brother, and her nephew created England. Let that sink in for a second. The scale of what she was directly a part of blows my mind. Forget Elizabeth I. Without Aethelflaed, there may have never been an Elizabeth I. There may have never been an England. These people forged the kingdom that changed the face of the world forever. Remember their names.

@@robertanderson6786 Now there is a genuine "strong woman" who wouldn't need story embellishment, a gender swap, disparaging men to prop her up or any other woke bullshit. Why does the left refuse to celebrate genuine female heroes like this? Thank goodness The Last Kingdom kept her memory sacred by portraying her as strong, powerful, dangerous, intelligent and feminine. A role model for us all.

I am myself a Mercian. It's an interesting "what if" to imagine how England would have unfolded if Mercia had held it's hegemon over the heptarchy. And if perhaps Aethelflaed had been born a man who had outlived Edward the Elder, and been the immediate ancestor of the English royal house. I have no doubt that London would still be the capital as it was always the most powerful and important MERCIAN city. But I wonder if the seat of nobility would have been in Tamworth??? Nevertheless I think the English people owe a debt of gratitude to Aethelflaed. A truly unique and gifted woman who defended her people.

I agree with Keynes on Aethelred and Aetheflaed; Mercia was subordinate to Alfred and then Edward as sovereign. One can understand Mercian chroniclers to lionize Aethelflaed at Edward's expense because of Mercia's fealty to the House of Wessex and the loss of a separate identity. In 903, a Mercian ealdorman petitioned 'King Edward, and also Aethelred and Aethelflaed'; meaning Mercia probably carried out Wessex policy as subjects, including its defense.

Thank you for the informative video. I believe there is a counterpart to Aethelflaed here in the United States. Very few know America's first patron of war and protector was Lady Columbia and the first anthem was a tribute to her. Like Aethelfaed she is pictured with a sword in hand. I don't believe this is a just coincidence. I remember reading an article about the designing of America's great seal. It was reported that Thomas Jefferson wanted to uses the two brothers, Hengist & Horsa on this seal. His augment was, " We are Saxons. " I think it's obvious England Aethelflaed and Lady Columbia are the same. In America's first struggles they adoption Oueen Aethelflaed and rename her Lady Columbia. She became the battle cry for this New Nation.

Danes came from the same general area of the Denmark/Germany region as the Angles and Saxons 400 years earlier. So the Viking invasions were kind of like the British invading the colonial United States in the war of 1812. People of the same ancestry separated by geography several hundred years. It wouldn’t surprise me if the language’s were similar.

This analogy is rather an oversimplification of the historical events. The ancestors of those who became Anglo-Saxons may have been in Britain as early as the 4th century as mercenaries to British Celtic warlords who needed to defend Britain's shores from pirates and raiders. In time these Germanic mercenaries became the warlords of the most fertile lands and intermarried with the native Celtic to become the Anglo-Saxons. By the time the Vikings invaded Britain, the two people were quite different in religion, language and customs. But that's just my opinion....

The battle in 910 was the battle of Wednesfield not Tettenhall. Check the Anglo Saxon Chronicles. It clearly states Wednesfield as the location of the battlle.

It is awesome that Salic law never took hold in Britannia.

Very good video and very interesting lady in her time who knew the policy and procedures of where she was living in. Shame that she died at 48 to see how far what she could do and still very remarkable lady she was.

Of course, that was a good old age in those times, with no doctors or study of medicine, except bank in the "Muslim "diaspora, they kept alive the science of the ancient Greeks etc,for a time, until the Medieval Renaisance.
