A fast engine, a good fireman, and a light train were ideal for a record-setting run of the 188 miles from Memphis to Canton. Already an hour and 1/2 behind in schedule John Luther “Casey” Jones took the Throttle in Memphis Tennessee on April 30, 1900. Casey had been assigned Engine No. 382, also known as "The New Orleans Special," later to become the famous "City of New Orleans.
