A fast engine, a good fireman, and a light train were ideal for a record-setting run of the 188 miles from Memphis to Canton. Already an hour and 1/2 behind in schedule John Luther “Casey” Jones took the Throttle in Memphis Tennessee on April 30, 1900. Casey had been assigned Engine No. 382, also known as "The New Orleans Special," later to become the famous "City of New Orleans.

Peter, I think it would be beneficial to re-edit this video and re-release it without the background noise. The Sim Webb interview you used seems to be the entire recording.. and I can’t seem to find it anywhere else online. Would be very beneficial, historically, to share the unedited and complete recording without any background noise. Just some helpful feedback for you.

Thanks for the video. the clip of the BNSF head on collision happened in Madera,Ca at a siding station known as "Kismet", between Fresno,CA and Stockton,CA. I was a Conductor at the time working in Barstow,Ca The Locomotive consists on both trains were transported to Barstow after the collision I took the opportunity to see the engines up close. while standing in one of the Locomotive cabs, time stood still, a serious wake up call for me!. Someone was watching over the crews of these engines during the accident, an entity much larger than life, amazingly all crew members survived the incident. kind regards! Eric Dee.

Tad difficult sentence structure midway; the lack of punctuation/capitals, etc.. I'd be great, IF you are visiting your own post today, to take advantage of the 3 dot edit icon on right, click it, and correct the mushy stuff..I mean your miraculous tale deserves it !! It Could'a been like the collision in Cayce S.C. last week !!........ Congratulations ! M, Los Angeles

Too much background music (and not great music) for the quality of the fireman's recording.

This wreck could have been easily avoided by simple closing the angle cock on the engine side of the car at the broken air hose and then walking back toward the caboose bleeding the air off of all the remaining cars. From there, pull the train in the siding and fix the broken air hose. 5 to 10 min to do this tops. If the freight was really close on time to be in the clear, then someone should have taken off immediately, ignoring the air hose, at a dead run towards the passenger train with a fusee and torpedo's in time to stop the passenger train. I don't think anyone did the latter and because Sim was black they didn't take his word that they received no warning. I don't think they received any warning and if they had received warning from beyond the curve there would have been no damage at all.

I'm writing a book about John Henry, a real, breathing man. I think I'll write about this " true tall tale" too. I was asked if I would, & it seems fitting to go alongside America's other tal tale, John Henry. His book I titled, " John Henry & The Blue Collar World;Grit, Sweat & love".

This needs to be redone. The sound is terrible

There's a difference from being able to hear and not wanting to filter though a bunch of noise, trying to listen to a message that's already coming from old film. I get having a soundtrack, but the mixing needs to be better.

Sorry but this is the saddest excuse for a documentary I’ve seen on RU-vid. So much more could have been done with the Webb audio than this nonsense.👎🏻
